bullfighting?
fishing?
hunting? (fox, pig, duck)

How about showjumping? A horse doesn't naturally jump over anything it can get around.

Be consistent here, lefties. Don't just attack our public holidays.

I think a lot of people are opposed to hunting, and especially bullfighting. I think fishing is a bit of a grey area, due to some questions on how fish actually perceive pain.

My issue with fishing is not killing fish and eating them - it's the particular methodology of modern day fishing that I have a problem with. Sinking a hook through their mouth, then tossing them in a bucket and leaving them to die slowly out of water. It just amounts to torture.

Agreed, regardless of whether they feel pain that's a pretty inhumane and undignified way to kill another creature. I was always taught to go fishing with an esky full of ice, and put the knife through their head ASAP.

Just close down the racing industry tomorrow. Yes it will be hard on the people who rely upon it to survive, but in a generation the whole stinking lot of them will be gone.

The unemployed protesting brigade sure have a lot of ideas for action, when they are the least people of action themselves.

Quite funny they think people will ever respect their view.

Apparently, Australia has the highest per capita gambling losses in the world. So it would seem it's cruel to people as well.

Australians lose about $24 billion per year gambling.

Racing (all three codes) is $3.3 billion, or about 14% of it.

Sports betting is $1 billion, or about 4%. And growing in leaps and bounds (15 - 20% growth per year).

Casinos are $4.8 billion, or 20% of it.

Pokies are $12.1 billion, or 50% of it.

People will shoot this down but - of all the forms of gambling, racing isn’t that bad. It at least provides substantial employment (one of the highest employing industries in Australia) and tourism. And it’s not something children come into contact with often. Unlike sports betting, which is rammed down their throat constantly. They’re doing the form on the footy or the basketball from when they’re old enough to read, they just don’t know it. But the gambling companies sure know it.

The animal welfare issues are largely a product of over breeding - which CAN be fixed, relatively simply, if we want it to be. Trouble is the reach that breeders have with those in power.

You have a point with horse racing not being that bad because unlike Pokies which is little more than pressing a button whereas horse racing can require some effort by the punter to pick winners, even if the research is as basic as the horse's colors or the name of the jockey or the trainer.

Providing employment or tourism doesn't make horse racing better than the other forms of gambling. Are you suggesting that the other forms don't do one or both?

And children don't come in to contact with it? Pretty much every school runs Melbourne Cup sweepstakes, don't they? It used to be one of the very few forms of gambling that was accessible to children, before the explosion of gambling advertising being integrated into sports media.

It really feels like you are scraping the bottom of the barrell when it comes to justifying the industry.

I think he was weighing up the benefits to the negatives for each and saying racing was the best wasn’t he?

If we are talking from a holistic perspective, I’d like to see the pokies long gone before anything else (I’ve actually tried to do a bit of work contacting politicians about this. It goes nowhere)

On an overall level horse racing is no more cruel than domesticating animals and keeping them as pets. In majority of the cases the animals are treated as well as humans and in a small percentage of cases they are treated badly. Kind of sums up life in general tbh

Unfortunately most people have no idea how true this statement is.

Horse racing survives in Dubai without betting. Some serious prizemoney on offer over there too.
I enjoy watching the races without a bet but I dont think it would survive in Australia without punters.

I feel like after the Spring Carnival all of the spotlight will again fade away and things will keep going along normally til next year.
