Strategy How can the St Kilda game plan be exposed?

You guys are talking as though a cats-saints gf is inevitable. It's more likely on current form that it will be a prelim and no weeks rest for the cats.

Do you really think that winning by cheating is winning?
How can you enjoy a victory you haven't earned?
If you have kids or are thinking of it in the future, I certainly hope you don't fill their heads up with that BS. I'm not a fan of St Kilda's scragging but Reiwoldt is a gun who plays hard and fair, and although I wouldn't be gutted if he had a sore hammy in the GF, I certainly don't wish him physical harm!
You need to re-assess some of your values, mate.

Football is not life.

I do not condone violence or thuggish behaviour in real life at all.

Peace, Love and all that stuff IS life, its just not football.

I value winning at all costs in football. Quite the opposite in life though.

Putting a flower in the barrel of a gun does not work when crossing that white line.

Are you saying Hawthorn didn't deserve the flag last year because of sniping tactics?

Who cares about how people perceive them, they still won.

Sorry Vealsy, definitely don't agree with you here.

We tried such tactics before, with the Hawks and Eagles in the 89 and 90's runs. Where did that get us?

We have so much more skill than that to resort to such actions, more so, I believe our leadership wouldn't even contemplate it. I would highly be offended if our leadership resorted to such inethical ploys to win a game.

Other clubs have tried it against us, we say it is sniping. Would we want that from our players?

We are too good for that. Lets win on our skills and ability.

Yeh I understand. I know our club is not like that at all.

I was merely throwing the idea out there. Maybe seeing Big Cam and SJ fired up on saturday has got my testosterone flowing.

I bet nobody would be saying this if Id mentioned Milnes name instead of Reiwoldt.

Ha ha, would probably agree if it was Milne! Nah only kidding.

I don't think we need to look at actively persuing such actions, as what you have suggested, Mooney will already be fired up!

Would love to see him recapture the passion, skill and ferociousness of the game against the Kangaroos a couple of years back, when they tried to run through our team during warmup. He was great that day.

Though I think he'll get the week off.

The internet is not real life.
Football is life for the participants. They risk injury as an occupational hazard but they should not expect to be assaulted at their place of work.
That shit went out in the 80s.
Plus, you don't win at all if you cheat and pre-meditated assault with the intenet of seriously injuring an opponent is cheating, pure and simple. It is a victory for your opponent because it tells them that you don't believe you can win on an even playing field.
And re Hawthorn...they deserved to win last year because they took their opportunities at goal when they had them while we didn't. Sniping had nothing to do with it.
Bottom line there is nothing tough or courageous about assaulting an opponent and I would like to think our club has proved itself above that.
Selwood is tough as nails but when did you see him hit someone?
He would consider it time wasted when he could be getting a kick.

When did I mention Selwoods name?

I specifically said Moons, then said Rooke would be better.

No need for the spin story to discredit rough play in sports.

We are talking about FOOTY, not a workplace, not real life, not the internet, just 'slug your guts out and win at all costs footy', in a GF.

Our club has specifically done this before, its up for debate whether it was effective or not. Not all GFs will be won how we played the 07 GF.

Don't forget, Saints will be extra nervous, they haven't played in one before, we've done 2 years and will be more focused on winning than the Saints, as history will hopefully show.

These are merely tactics to break down the oppositions bodys who have gone through a season unscathed.

All is fair in LOVE, WAR, AND GRAND FINALS.

vealesy, why dont we just arm our players to the teeth? if there is no send off rule, and all that matters to this team is winning the grand final this year, then send them out with grenades, the backline could all carry rifles, the mids could play with knifes in their socks, and the forwards could all use crowbars on the knees of who theyre up against, to gain those precious few metres on the leads?

still at least two finals matches to win before they even get there, unfortunately, so these tactics will have to wait. would hate to see our best 22 up on murder charges after the prelim. but, if we win the flag, i dont care if the whole team ends up in prison. they wouldnt either, it seems, as footy isnt real life...

A bit over the top there mate.

Maybe crowbars are a bit obvious, might have trouble tuckin them up the jumper.

Nails in the bottom of boots perhaps?

FFS. "Unsociable football" happens quite regularly. You must be too distracted by pathetic umpiring to notice it.

Why put 'morals' in front of winning a footy match?

These guys are not supposed to be ****en life role models. They are supposed to deliver success.

unfortunately unsociable football doesnt often deliver results. the team that focuses on just winning the ball generally will, and the scoreboard will reflect this. a focus on hitting people tends to get beaten by a focus on winning the ball. got to be hard at it, sure, and whoever plays in the GF will be. but a focus on hitting and niggling neglects the real issue of winning the ball, then the game.

When did I say you mentioned Selwood? I used him as an example of real courage and toughness as opposed to the gutless sniping you are promoting.

Re all's fair in love and war...
Grow the **** up!

Part of the reason I will look back on this era so fondly is that Geelong have succeeded by playing tough, fair attacking football without any malice or filthy play.
And I don't need to spin to discredit rough play in sports.
It is a low act to intentionally harm an opponent and it says a lot about your character that you promote it. I would suggest your attitude is not indicative of the Geelong fans I know and does not reflect the main opinion on this board.

just getting back to the original discussion, I thought what the Essendon game showed was that multiple forward entries is possible against St kilda (we proved it in round 14) with play on, handball and hard running.

The other critical component is that our small forwards must fire.

Johnson and Chapman have to be 100% fit to beat them.

Saints tackle count was down agaisnt Essednon and a number of tackles didn;t stick. Expect them to be more determined in that area in ensuing weeks.

What part of Footy is a workplace for professional footy players don't you understand? You're an embarrassment to GFC.
You're also the kind of dog that thinks it's courageous to king hit someone behind play like Matthews on Bruns.
It's not tough, it's not courageous and any victory that requires it is Pyrrhic.

Negate or break even with Riewoldt (3 goals or less and lots of marks on the wing), make Goddard accountable with Max Rooke, and make their ruckman put work into our guys in our F50 so they can't drift forward at will and you're more than halfway there!

Goddard was negated by Dons seemed to have limited output.

Did Rooke play on Goddard r14?

You SAID "break Riewoldt's collarbone", among other shit, including biting and gouging and kneeing in the balls. Gutless and not what GFC is about.

A footy club is a footy club, not some magical place of morals and dogma.

If that is what you choose to believe, then thats cool.

But don't get all high and mighty when I bring up tactics that are used in all grand finals across all sports.

My opinion has been stated, no more needs to be discussed, get back on topic please.

We don't need to break Reiwoldts collarbone, just keep him 50m from goal. By pulling his underarm hair in a scrimmage.

I am not involved in their day to day operations as a business. They are a bloody footy club to me. I value them winning GFs more than anything, forgive me if 07 made me hungry for more. I guess 1 will do for some.

"Pyrrhic".

More morals dribble no doubt.

Join a church.

Well...like our coach and our players and our President I value morals.
You just seem to be a lost cause but I guess every club has it's share of wanna be thugs.
But fortunately your kind has no valid input into the club.

I honestly wouldn't want Geelong to lose our integrity just for a very slight chance it may give us an advantage. Yes the game will be very hard but the hard contact i would want to see are hard tackles, shepherds etc. The game should be very physical game but we shouldn't resort to cheap shots.

I seriously think you might be happier at Hawthorn. Their "values" seem to fit yours like a glove.

I didn't know there were morals written into the AFL Rulebook.

What I am speaking about has nothing to do with 'morals'. I know our team does not place these tactics in high regard, and I agree with you that this is what makes them so great to watch.

Once again the PC brigade comes into to spoil the fun.

My opinion is no less valid than yours. Minority or not.
