I was thinking about Hawthorns rapid rise from mediocrity to being a powerhouse of the competition and i was wondering about HOW teams go from being pathetic to only afew years later being strong teams.

eg

Bisbane Lions
1998 - 16th
1999 - 3rd

Sydney Swans
1994 - 16th
1995 - 12th
1996 - 1st

Collingwood
2000 - 15th
2001 - 9th
2002 - 4th

Port Adelaide
2000 - 14th
2001 - 3rd
2002 - 1st

So my question is HOW did these teams rise in performance so quickly?

Early draft selections in good years and club concessions don't hurt.

Edit - also less injuries and having your best on the paddock all yar contributes pretty strongly.

Confidence is a funny things.

In reality between the middle 13/14 AFL teams there's probably about 10% max actual skill level difference, when one team gets on a high confidence winning roll they can be hard to stop as this can increase the gap to a larger level.

Bulldogs
2007 - 13th
2008 - 3rd
That wasn't a big surprise... they were good last year and then choked towards the end of the season...a lot like this year really

Thats a bit rich coming from someone whos team are currently the biggest finals chokers of the moment :eek::eek:

Lol, i was expecting that reply and i do agree - for some reason my boys don't like finals but all i was trying to say is that there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the dogs last year and the dogs this year

Some of those lists don't allow for good teams that under-perform badly in one year

- Geelong 2006 was an aberration in an steady rise
- Port in 2000 were coming of 3 years with a steady rise and their first final in 1999
- Arguably WB in 2007

Brisbane seemed to go south while they integrated the 2 merger teams

It doesn't explain all the sudden jumps but in some cases you need to look at the longer term and ignore the 1 year blips that all sides have from time to time

the facilities the eagles have access to are phenomenal.

to put it into perspective, they had world class facilities and then they "upgraded" subiaco - nett result from the state government spending about $40m was 3,000 extra seats and facilities beyond comprehension.

Sometimes, the only way is up.

Hawthorn

2008 1st
2007 5th
2006 11th

Hawthorn had a good core group of players after 2001 when they played in a prelim. On Clarkson's arrival, he set about removing the players that would not be part of a premiership and drafting and trading players that could join this core group and play for a premiership.

Crawford, Croad, Hodge, Williams, Bateman, Mitchell, Brown and Ladson all played in the Grand final and have been on the Hawthorn list for at least 7 years, except Croad who was traded away and brought back.

Hang onto the talent, get rid of the dead wood, draft wisely, hope for a little luck and cross your fingers.
