How do we fix the trade period?

AFL have it exactly right. Keeps the game in the paper for weeks during the off season.
This is the one and only reason they have extended the period, and it's very clever, as tigersman says it keeps the game in the paper for longer (funnily enough hey extended the trade period once the a league soccer moved their season to the week after the afl GF. the reasoning from the afl that extending the time to make a deal helps clubs is rubbish. In a negotiation, lessening the time makes deals done quicker.

- completely scrap the 'compensation' picks rule, it penalises all of the other clubs down the line, however, come up with a system whereby the club winning the Free Agent loses one of their draft picks to the club who they have taken the player from.

I don't know why this is so hard for people to grasp.....

THIS IS NOT FREE!!!!!!!

THIS IS A TRADE!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why nimrods cannot accept what I am proposing.

In my scenario, the club that is getting the FA player should be the ones who give up something whilst at the same time, it does not affect everyone else in the pecking order like the system does now.

Its not free......

Why is a club going to sign a free agent if it is going to cost them a draft pick?

They are essentially trading for that player.....

The already are giving up something - salary cap space and a list place. In turn, the losing club is getting that as "compensation", and shouldn't get a draft pick on top.

NFI why uncontracted players are still tradeable currency, or why they're eligible to re-enter the draft if a trade can't be done. They should be free agents, free to sign with whatever team they choose.

The sooner we fully convert to an NBA-style system instead of the half-assery we have now, the better.

Take away players right to choose club, he goes wherever club can find best deal. It's a privilege to play AFL not a right.

Trade period all the way to round 8. This way teams can trade away players in final year of contract and don't look likely to sign. Also makes it more exciting as clubs with no hope of finals trade for picks and finals contenders reload.

Compo picks for free agents stay but revamped. Lower clubs should receive more compo, top clubs get none or restricted as to number of FA allowed.

Lets get rid of the pre-season draft. It's main purpose now days is as leverage in trades.

If a player self-delists and puts themselves into the national draft, the departure club gets a compensation pick directly after the pick used to select the departed player. Prosecute players found to tampering the draft to get to a preferred club.

It doesn't compromise the draft as the extra player is taken at the same pick as the compensation pick. It also ensures that there is a "floor value" for departing players.

That should help restore the balance in trade deals.

I like this. It's a bit like using your ND pick to buy the player from the previous club who can then use the same pick to pick up another previous AFL player (so on trading the pick to a third club) or pick a draftee.

Or the concept of "free agent" is that the player is "free" to go wherever he chooses; doesn't imply that it is a "free" pickup by the receiving club.

I like the idea of players only being able to request trades to a particular state, rather than to a particular club. It allows a player to move home (for example) and the original club a chance to find a good trade. Win win.

Yeah fare enough. Ive had enough on my plate this week with my wife having an emergency c section and moving house thid week so plenty here now.
That puts trading into perspective.
All the best to your loved ones.
As for the trade period, I'm fine with it, but I think the scrapping of the PSD has some merit

But he isn't free to go wherever he wants?

If a club has to give up a draft pick for the player.....they'll look at the benefit of the player against the draft pick.

No matter which way you want to try and bend it, it isn't free for the player or club.

A good starting point, would be that clubs and players honour contracts. If a player is under contract, they shouldn't be able to be traded under any circumstances. A contract is a contract.

No, to me the free part means the player has no obligation to his previous club. The other alternative is to axe compo and then explicitly bring back the PP under previous rules (start of 2nd round for 1 poor season, start of first for 2) and understand that tanking will happen.

Two of the most stressful things that you can do. And in the same week!

Are she and the bub OK?
