Given the fantastic performance by the team last night, you'd be damn unlucky not to make the team for Round 1 ...

That said, we've got the likes of Ossie, Rioli, Bateman, Gibson, Burgoyne and Clinton Young still to come back into the team.

Who makes way?

Undoubtably the young boys put on a great show last night but it would be ignorant to say on the back of a win over Richmond that they would be a walk up start for round one.
The likes of Osbourne, Rioli, Young, Bateman, and even untried Gibson, Hooper and Burgoyne (assuming all are fit and ready for round 1) would surely need to be included in the team if we are interested in putting our best team on the park.
These young boys are sure to get their opportunities however it will need to be shared. I think that Shoey and Shiels will get their share first - with games behind them they just seem to have more confidence and finesse than the others. Suckling for mine was pretty good last night but it will be all about getting some consistency in the season proper and if there are no injuries then this may take more time for these young developing boys.

We have a bunch of stars to come back yet and can only fit so many into the 22. The bolded one's below are to come back yet, all 8 of them and IMO are in our best 22. If this team can stay together on the park we're lookin good.

B: Guerra Gilham Brown
HB: Birchall Schoenmakers Gibson
C: Lewis Mitchell Young
HF: Burgoyne Franklin Rioli
F: Osborne Roughead Bateman
Foll: Bailey Hodge Sewell
Int: Taylor Ellis Ladson Hooper

Who knows if Renouf or Taylor will be the 2nd ruckman by the time Max gets back. Skipper looks to be a handy backup.
Moss, Suckling, Shiels and Morton will be pushing for a spot and some snapping at the heals of Osborne and Hooper for that crumbing/forward pocket role.
Guys like Savage and Dowler will be good depth players also.
Depth looking excellent at this stage.

What I saw last night was similar to what one would see out at Waverley on a training night, circuit work with lots of handball, players weaving in and out of the lines running around in circles, too much for the likes of a team such as this -

Baulking oncoming players, left-foot launches into the scoring zone [come in Clint - missed your style of play badly last year] interspersed by well structured meaningful straight forward handballing through the zones will be integral parts of our game plan - not like going through the motions last night to brush of the cobwebs for some of our champs and to allow some of our young potentials to have a run in a competitive environment.

Simplistic over handballing will be easy pickings for the top sides - so let’s not think we were watching the real home-and-away season Hawthorn against an experimental Richmond with a rookie coach.

Keep hearing that Burgoyne will be right to go in Round 1.
With no intra nor pre-season games will he be a walk up start or perhaps play a game at BHill?

Interested in peoples thoughts.

for me:

murphy out for gibbo, brown was awesome last nite and may need him in backline this year

savage out

muston was dissapointing and needs to lift this year

morton - looked ok, needs time, play him next week and see how he goes

bruest was impressive, but needs to tackle hard

i am not sure if young will be fit for rd 1, and lets hope he is,,,,the club has been very cautious with him

overall i am thrilled

I was thinking the same thing while watching the game last night Gary.

A few games under the belt should help tighten things up though...

Will be watching Schoey closely for the rest of the preseason. I am yet to be 100% convinced that he is a walk up start in our defence. He is still very raw - a silky mover - but very raw and I think he may have more of a utility role for us this season - whether it be in defence, midfield or up forward. If our defence is teaming well it may mean that the need to fast-track Schoey into a CHB as we have been doing this preseason slips down the priority order a bit and we can use him in positions more suited to his natural game as a weapon or he may be given time to learn the CHB position at Box Hill.

Would have thought that the handballing will be replaced by more precision kicking with Bateman, Rioli and Burgoyne in the side. Plus the boys might settle down a little. First game of the year everyone is probably a bit jumpy.

I think it is very important to remember that last night was the first match of the season and as such most of our guys were fumbly & slightly out of sorts. Hodge & Buddy were obviously gems; Mitch warmed to it & Shiels ended well but the rest, as you would expect in the first game of the year, appeared rusty (or worse) at different times.

Knowing this it is hard to single out guys that need to improve as that is exactly the point of the NAB Cup - allowing teams to hit their straps by Round 1.

What I will say is this: Over the summer I was one of the guys that thought that BROWN would struggle for a spot in the 22 and thought that his best use was trade bait. Based on last night - I was wrong... BROWNIE was great last night; both as a defender and as a link up player coming out of defence. If we are to release both Hodgey & Ellis into the middle, or even forward, then BROWN is a must for the backline.

My best 22 is:

FB: Guerra - Gilham - Brown
HB: Birchall - Gibson - Ladson
Ce: Bateman - Hodge - Young
HF: Lewis - Franklin - Burgoyne
FF: Rioli - Roughead - Osborne

Ru: Bailey
RR: Mitchell
Ro: Sewell

I/C: Taylor, Schoenmakers, Ellis and Shiels.

With the week's break between games, I would expect Gibson to be right for the doggies with Bateman, Ossie and Hooper also in contention.

I'm surprised the amount of times I've read Hooper as being part of our best 22 over the last few days. Anyone have any particular reason for this?

Personally I'd like to see him tearing it up at Box Hill before he gets a senior game (assuming the rest of the squad is fit, of course).

CLA's best 22 is on the money for mine. Hard to make a case to put Hooper in front of any of those players in my opinion.

Could not agree with u more. Murphy was the only downside in what was a positive night.

His decision making is just as bad as it has ever been. Only suited to 1 position on the feild and the only reason he survived the "chop" was our obvious lack of depth in kpd.

Yes, musto. Clarko's pencil would be hard at work on the drawing board for what is required against teams like Cats, Saints, Doggies and other clubs intensively at their drawing boards on how to improve for '10.

I believe the material and depth our head honcho has to work with is fantastic. So many stars, youngsters blooded last season (that is the upside of our downer '09 where kids were given opportunities) and other exciting kids we saw introduced at York Park on Saturday.

We could say though, that we Hawks fans have been boasting about our depth and really if one thinks about it we rarely fielded our 2008 premiership team throughout last season and at one stage in the home & aways we were 8 premiership players short.

So, therefore, we did well with so many kids to finish 9th - youngsters forging their wares and some of our champs wearing themselves out setting examples leading the way, taking its toll to the last round.

Nice to read HJ. :thumbsu:

Expect Laddo to get some more game time too.

Great to have Laddo back. I Only saw a bit of the game and I'm interested to hear how people viewed Ellis' game? Did he give any indication that he could make the step up from very good youngster to elite-midfielder? Early days in 2010 obviously but keen to see him do really well this year!

Lisle to play Rd1 in lieu of Buddy? I'd like to see it, if not who plays KPF, Dowler?
I'd play Dowler ahead of Lisle at this stage. When we actually let him play as a leading full forward he's good, as his 7 goals in two games at the end of last season showed.

I don't know that Lisle currently has the size or pace to worry too many decent defenders, not that he did anything wrong on the weekend.

I agree with CLA's team on the whole, although having Bailey there now is a bit of wishful thinking and I also get the impression that if Bailey makes it, then Renouf will be the backup (to have the tap/endurance switch to make if needed).

In terms of KP forwards for Rd 1, I reckon that Shoey is a chance for up front. I can't think of too many talls for the Dees up front and so the defence probably won't need him.

BTW, can the Murph bashers have a rest. I watched the game, and although at times he looked a bit caught in the headlights, I don't think he had a shocker! Let's be positive people. If you want to bash, at least be constructive about it!

Cheers
