How has the Recession affected you personally so far?

It hasn't
I quit work in June to study this year and take a nice break.
Since then teh world has gone to sh!t but I've been working very part time at a Bowls club that my mum runs and that gives me enough money to get by.

I also think that here in Australia we have nothing to worry about. Our dollar was far too high to do any good. at 0.95USD we couldn't export anything and thats what we do, me build it/grow it/make it and sell it o/seas. At 0.55USD we can now export everything.

Interest rates keep going down and I have a decent pay rise...all good so far...a tax cut would be nice.

Same here. The decrease in interest rates is a blessing although have lost a small amount on shares. Also some good deals on plasma's and blu rays so have done my bit for the economy.

I have lost money on my investments, but I do not npotice that as it is long term.

The effects it has had on me so far:
  • Bought a nice new Subaru Liberty very cheap
  • Run the car cheaply compared to a year ago
  • Being a Civil Engineer specialising in Roads design and construction supervision, still have plenty of work.

All up, not too bad really.

Hasn't to be honest. I seem to be making more money for some reason.

My opinion is that in any economic situation, no service or product suddenly ceases all demand for. The best suppliers of a product/service will always survive.

The only thing is a drop in my property value on paper, I had thought about selling but it's not a good time for that and rents are still up, so what's the point?

Yes and no

12-13 months ago we sold out rain water business and i went back to work for Wizard Home loans.

On the 20th of December 2008 i tendered my resignation as the industry was very slow because of the world ecconomy and housing prices. The office i was working at wasn't a very affluent neighbourhood and the office portfolio came to a stand still. I had a good savings nest egg to fall back on so i quit.

I had already decided to go back to uni this year so quiting wasn't a major big deal. I already have a BA in business with a marketing major.

So i have felt the sting over the last few months but can and will fall on my feet when i want a job.

Financially, not much. Mortgage gets cheaper, so principle being belted away, and petrol is cheaper.

However I work for a fund manager, and 'twas an odd day when a bloke walked out of the goods lift, dropped a stack of unmade cardboard boxes on the floor, nodded then left. As if to say "a few of you will be filling these up in the next few days".

Watching people one by one walk into the CIO's office when D-Day arrived was also a strange one. Know many people in the market who have been culled, not sure what they're going to do now.

Not to mention you winning big on the punt. :p

I am working full time in fast food, instead working in an admin job that is more closely related to university. I live at home with my parents, so I have no right to complain.

I am planning to do two more years of university and become a nurse (in a couple of years) Nursing should be a booming industry in the next 10-20 years with Australia's ageing population. I do not want to do a Dip-Ed and teach. Nope.

Was not my original plan, but I took a punt Australia's economic boom would last until 2010-11. I get a nasty feeling once the recession has finished, it will be a very slow jobless recovery. :(

Haven't been affcted yet, and probably won't be until August. At that time my contract is up, and they might go hunting for somebody capable.
Funding approval seems certain for up until June next year, just that being government (and in an area immune from most cuts) they can't actually get signatures on bits of paper yet.

Financially, well my Euro salary now means more Aussie dollars to pay off less interest with the lower rates on my property loans in Oz. So I'm ahead there.

Work-wise, well being an expat always means a higher risk of getting your marching orders in down times. Not too worried though, fortunately my line of work (outsourcing) actually thrives in down times as companies look to lower expenditure by farming out their operations to entities like us, so there are quite a few opportunities out there.

Well I may be getting back into the PT job I quit at the end of last year due to the difficulty in getting another PT job right now. I have a far better chance of getting that job back given that the boss is happy to have me back asap and the high turn over rate of staff.

I have applied for a dozen jobs on the seek website and have heard back from none - very very unusual given the ease in getting jobs that I have experienced in the past from that site. ATM I am trying to live off occassional ongoing casual work working at some of Perths major music festivals as a bar staff member, which is good but is not stable and sustainable enough to just live off that income.

There is absolute next to no chance right now of engineering students obtaining PT work with engineering firms, and a few of my mates have had their PT positions in these areas withheld (i.e. they are not getting any 'shifts' until theres enough work available) and some have lost their jobs. Some 2008 graduates have been laid off and paid redundancies from some of the bigger firms (I have heard that one major engineering consulting firm in brisbane laid off all their graduates by giving them $8000 cheques and telling them to go find other work). There are some eng graduates getting unusual jobs, such as jobs in local government for example.

The word from my mates currently with jobs in consulting firms is that job prospects will start to recover from June after they continue to fall down up to then, so fingers crossed that I am not going to find it diffucult to get a job at the end of this year when I finish up.
