Was going to make a new thread but found this one.

Whats the best sickie excuse you've ever heard?

Best I used was that I wanted to head down to the WACA to watch Punter one last time.

Boss said that was fine.

It's not untrue but I was able to get out of flying to Calgary to do a presentation last week because my wife is due to have a baby soon and I didn't want to leave the Province. Kid has been useful before even being born :p

two a year is what I answered two years ago
remains true

in my experience... having a day off does not give you much of a holiday - you just end up needing to catch up (and then some) the next day

So you don't work in the sort of environment where some schmuck has to do the work of 2 people for the day? Unlucky. :(

I haven't missed a day since March 2010. I wasn't that unwell at all and could have gone if I really wanted to. Since then I have been much sicker but still sucked it up. We have an appalling culture of taking sick days for completely trivial matters where I am now and I simply refuse to be seen in the same light as some of my colleagues.

In total I've missed five days of work: two for diarrhoea, two for the flu, and one above for general illness.

The people I don't get are the ones that hate their job but never take time off. Take my girlfriend for instance - she has been in her job for about 4 years now and in that time she has taken one sick day, and in the past 24 months has taken no time off at all. Kudos to her for being so punctual, but all she does is complain about her job and bosses. I ask her all the time why she doesn't take a day off and each time she says something like nah I can't got an important meeting today or nah I can't got an 8.30 appt with a client etc etc - basically no matter how much she whinges about her job, she will not take a day off because she is too busy. Even when she is sick she will still go into work, yet will complain about her job every time I see her - and then get defensive when I tell her she needs to take time off. I can't win.
Well, it might be two years since he posted this but we've finally solved the mystery of why Drakes girlfriend won't miss work.

2 consecutive days this year when I genuinely could not get out of bed.

i get shitted with this mentality too. and this "important" bullshit that people trot out. it's not ****ing important. it doesn't mean anything really. when you're lying on your death bed are you gonna remember all those important meetings? no, you're gonna remember the great times with family and friends, festivals, music, sporting events etc,. and people seem to have lost sight of this fact.

It can be a pain for other people if they have to cancel a meeting at late notice because you're off sick, when everyone's already cleared their calenders.

I've gone into work on a sick day for a meeting. I've also been in a couple of meetings where sick people Skype or teleconference in.

I suppose the old saying work to live don't live to work rings true with me but unfortunately some people are just so obsessed with their work and building their career that they forget about the importance of the things you mentioned. Obviously having a good career is necessary and hard work is required if you want to get anywhere, but your job really should be a distant second to enjoying life with friends & family. But that's just me, I don't take my job too seriously because its not a matter of life or death, it's about earning money to live a comfortable & enjoyable life and if I've got the 4 weeks paid leave available to me, why the hell wouldn't I take it?! My partner has so much annual leave saved up it's sad.

Probably about 3 or 4.

This one bish at my work takes 1 every 2 weeks or so. It is a ******* joke. They need to fire her fat lazy arse.
We've got the same thing going on. She was given some stern words from HR and management a couple of weeks ago and looked a little remorseful afterwards, but it remains to be seen if she will change her ways.

We have another chick who takes a couple of weeks of annual leave as she is entitled to, but then is "sick" the day before too. This has happened to many times to be a coincidence.

Then there are several others who have basically said they use their sick leave over the course of the year because it's "there to be used" FFS.

Nothing gets my goat like my staff calling in sick when not legitimate. I had one person exhaust their balance (17 days per year too) by taking a day off at the slightest hint of a sniffle. Sure enough later in the year this staff member legitimately has an illness but alas had no leave available. I just about gleefully put through her leave without pay for a couple of weeks. She was in tears at not having any income for a fortnight, but you make your bed you need to lie in it. And make no mistake, your boss notices trends with dodgy personal leave.

I've been in my role for about 7 years and have probably taken 5 days off sick in that time. I'd love to see employers incentivise not taking personal leave - and stop the dodgy days off when someone cant be buggered coming into work on any particular day

I have been reliably informed that my manager has noticed these patterns at my work. I still shits me though because I'm inevitably the one who has to cover for them. Some of them have had more days just off sick than I have had total leave. I'm sure sometimes it's legitimate but more often than not I think they just have to HTFU.

Only five days off in seven years? That's good. Is it an integrity thing or just that you have literally only been unwell on five days?

Employers incentivising not taking sick leave will just encourage people to come in when they are actually sick, which to my mind is far more annoying than someone who takes the odd dodgy day off.

Why do people take others taking sick leave as a personal affront?
Not everyone is on the same level when it comes to job commitment.

As for me personally, I'll take to occasional "mental health day" in order to maintain my sanity but try to make it on a day i know will be quiet(er). If that day takes a while to eventuate, I'll wait.

If I'm legitimately sick, I'm staying home without an ounce of guilt.
I despise people who come in sick and then brag that they haven't taken a day off in x amount of time.

Job commitment is one thing, not shitting on your work mates is quite another. Good on you for taking your breaks when it's quiet, but we have several who take their "rest days" whenever it suits them and when there is work that just can't wait somebody else has to do it. We have somebody else who was diagnosed with something quite serious and spent a few days in hospital. I've got no problem whatsoever in that case because it was legitimate and they didn't abuse their leave entitlements.
