Mate, if the Eagles are offering a 4year contract to Hartung, they're not going to be handing over a 3rd rounder. It doesn't work that way.

A player and 2nd Rounder is nothing to be sneezed at.

Sorry but I fundamentally disagree. An extended contract is part of the negotiation to lure a non WA player over to the state. He will want security. It does not inflate Hartung's value. He and pick 32 is significant unders for a player like Andrew Gaff.

Good to see you come around and agree with us!

...
That was their choice. But the fact remains we have leverage because we don't have to trade him. It definitely does not mean nothing.
It will depend if there is genuine interest for Gaff to return home. West Coast seem a pretty good club and may look to facilitate that that for Gaff. Then they get the best they can, not the open market value. Good clubs will do that, shit clubs won't and are run by Tony Cochrane and the like. Call it karma, call it what you like but that sort of good will towards a player does come back to you in the end.

with the afl looking like they are trying to faze out FA compo, i would expect Gaff to land Band 2 if he left as a FA. Pick 19-22 give or take.

So if (a big IF) Gaff looks like he is leaving it would be smart for WC to try and find a replacment asap.

It's true that we are 'nice guys' at the trade table, although we've also shown a reluctance to trade contracted, required players (again I use the Mitch Brown example). If we accepted an offer of Hartung and 32 for Gaff Mr Craig Vozzo would have his balls handed to him on a platter.

There is merit to that point of view. But Hartung does not constitute a satisfactory replacement regardless of whether he is packaged with a pick in the 30's.

OK, so Hartung + which pick would get it done from your perspective?

I dont think pick 30 will get it done. If hawks and wc are talking id assume hawks have a higher pick already stiched up. But dont take what i say as any thing more then just my opinon. Im probs way off.

Given he is contracted we would be pushing hard for close to a top five pick but may accept something in the top eight. Having said that it's against the club's nature to trade a contracted required player (see Mitch Brown in 2013) so I can't see him going this year. If we hold onto him for another year I'd expect Band 1 compensation (AA in 2016, BnF and possibly BnF again this year).

I'm sorry to say but Gaff even contracted is not a pick 5's ares hole. no offence to the player intended.

If a contracted HILL was traded out for a low second round pick how do you justify Gaff being a pick 5.

Well, sorry bud, but reality is a bitch.

Gaff isn't gong to earn you a top 10 pick, and as that is what you're seemingly only interested in hearing you probably need to accept you're not going to hear it here.

All Australian. Averages 10 full possessions per game more than Hill at point of trade. Hill got great service from premiership teammates, so there was a doubt over his production in a lesser team. Whereas Gaff has to run around like a blue-arsed fly closing the space that our slow midfield leaves. Also, you don't get to factor in Hill's obvious improvement this year.

Anyway, Gaff's value is determined by what other teams would pay, not by our speculation. I don't know if it's pick 5 - but it's a fair way above what Brad Hill was worth a year ago.

I don't think there is a viable Gaff-Hartung trade, regardless of balancing picks. We need more A-grade midfielders, so swapping our second-best mid for two lesser parts (Hartung, pick outside first round) does not improve our list.

If Gaff does want to come home, I expect we'll trade for the single best pick we can get.

And if we do trade for Hartung, I think we'll do so independently.
