Anyone who claims there was more footy talk than last year is either a bloody biased liar or didnt even watch last year

The major turning point was that this time the players did alot of the talking instead of McGuire. I like Eddie, he's articulate and insightful at times, yet just as biased as we'd all be if we were the president of our football club, and to be honest, overall he was genuinely commited to make every Victorian team strong. John Elliot chose to single out and degrade the dees on foxtel, but Ed gave every club a fair shot at having a say or plugging their own sponsers. That all said, he was a dominating force and like Lyon said, the players should have more than token inputs, instead of a debate between Eddie and Sam about Football issues. James Hird was given an actual task and provided some interesting information from a credible, relevant source. The players will become more outspken this year and i suspect Lyon is alot more willing to "push the envelope" with players themselves.

If Brain Taylor makes a few appearances, lookout for players being actually grilled on the show.

Brayshaw didn't look nervous, just jacked off that Newman spoke over him the first two times he tried to speak.

Newman drags the show sown more than Ed ever did.

Give em a break, its a whole new vehicle with a new driver and to be honest I see alot of Eddie in Lyon, even in some mannerisms and especially when dealing with Sam.

Very early.

EDIT: Just after I posted this I heard the funniest thing one the show for years (Im on a 3 hour delay here). But talking about drugs and James H says they've sorted it out at Essendon, so then Sam says towards Browny that they've sorted it all out at Richmond, then someone addresses Craford and says they've also sorted it out at Hawthorn, and Sam cracks himself up and understandably as the camera pans to Crawford :D

There was footy talk last year. It's just that to most people, whenever Eddie went on about Collingwood, they didn't classify that as footy talk.

Also for anyone interested, the bit with Stephen Fleming launching into that ex-cricketer / reporter was apparantly all a 'spoof'.
really? that was really well done if so.
Who said it was a spoof, because it looked pretty serious to me.

Best thing i've ever heard a kiwi say, dont take it away from them.

A slow start to be sure, but think back. The original format of the show took a while to find its feet. I remember Eddie wasn't as confident a host as he is now. Gary and JB have had hosting gigs, but nothing like taking over a multi-award winning show, changing the format in the way they have with absolutely diddly-squat in terms of musical acts and no new footy gossip that matters. I was expecting worse when it started, and the slow beginning was always going to happen, but I reckon they'll come good the longer they go. They just need to figure out when to speak. Sam will have less to do as the months roll by (eg, maybe make it JB's mailbag instead of Sams), the players speaking about each side was a great idea that should have been implemented years ago, and the two hosts could work, given some time to speak.

Not a raging success, but I'm more positive about it now than I was this time last year.

i used to watch it just to see what Eddie would do that would annoy me that week. He's one of those guys i hate to watch, but couldn't not watch.
thank you for being honest enough to admit what 1000's of other wouldn't. i reckon a large proportion of viewers tuned in for that reason. I am an Eddie fan of course but never watched becoz its a crap show. Many Pie fans have the same view.

It's a television show. It's entertainment. It entertained. Like an earlier poster, I suspect that Lyon has more than a touch of the megalomania about him too but he kept in in check last night. No self important monologues, more fun, more footy. Worth another look.

I thought it was pretty good for the first show. It will get better once everyone has settled in. I completely lost interest in the footy show last year as I got sick of Ed peddling his own agenda all night.
Just for the record JB was no "B grade" cricketer. In actual fact he played PM's XI and was dam close to playing for Australia at one stage. Don't know too many B grade cricketers that made sheffield shield double centuries.

Spot on Gandaal, its back to being a footy show, not a variety show.

Lyon and Brayshaw have gotten better as the show has gone on, and I'm sure they will get better as time go's on.

Just as Eddie did 13 years ago.

Have you actually ever watched the show? It's always been a football based variety show........

It's a spoof. Mark Richardson has a sports entertainment show in New Zealand and it was filmed as a skit for that. Mark Richardson has a good sense of humour for anyone who remembers him dressed in lycra body suits taking on the slowest runners in each team after each test series.

My 2c worth:

1. for some reason i was getting annoyed with lyons constant hand movements, and leaning over the table.

2. JB looked like a deer in headlights. hope to god he gets better cause hes quality

3. have 2 hosts is hard given that neither of them know when the other ones gonna speak (re: non scripted stuff of course). ie. if a player/sam asks a question to them, sometimes theyll speak at the same time.

4. open skit was hilarious!!! probably the only time ive tolerated james blunt

5. hope BT gets a gig every now and then.

having said all this everything will improve as the year progresses.

I actually really enjoyed the show, Not sure how long the 2 hosts will work yet I enjoyed it much more than 99% of the shows from last year.

I got off to a shakey start but i enjoyed it more as it went on. Being an SA lad i grew up listening to Brayshaw on the radio and he is all quality just abit nervous last night but when he is on he is on. I see alot of room for growth and improvment. I think it will be different to last year but that is a good thing. It was time for some fresh faces. I rated it though

there was no more footy talk than last year, it was all rushed together from game 1-8

and also the crowd was DEAD, there was no pop after each team was announced and a few of the good jokes sounded ******** cause they didnt get involved.

whats the rush of finishing on time anyway? let it go to 11.30 and just enjoy the time you have

The show is ten times better then it was last season. The stale feeling of the old footy show is gone.

Double thumbs up :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Hear Hear.

Much prefer the new format (It took until after the pathetic rendition of Ben before it found its legs).

I am yet another who turned off a few years ago (with the odd relapse to get the teams).

One other change i would make is to get rid of Trevor too. Maybe injecting some new blood might provide a few gags from behind the bar that actually raise a smile.

How was the format "new"?

I thought the show was awful, so many skippers and not enough crew. Who was the leader of the show that was pushing the agenda, keeping the whole thing moving? It was all over the place. ABC radio said before it was the highest rating show in Melbourne last night. Nine must be happy, but it hasn't revived any spark with me to keep watching it. If I want light entertainment, plenty of shows on Foxtel will keep me busy for that. If I was hoping for a footy show, it definately let me down. 40 minutes before the players were called out about 10 minutes later before they started reading the teams which were rushed.

4 out 10.

Must admit the second half got better. Instead of racing through the lineups they could have scrapped the skits and went for a bit of in-depth analysis. I rate Brayshaw and think he will improve.

Agree on more in deopth analysis - f@rk of the variety show tag (thats Berts gig) and leave it as a real football show with minimal comedy routines.

Disagree on Brayshaw - use him in a bits role but leave it to Lyon - he looked more accomplished and actually knows something about the game.

Brayshaw is an Adelaide boy who cant believe he has made it big in the big smoke....poor mans Lyon IMO (and shyte cricketer to boot).

After not watching for a few years, gave it a go.
Switched off when they started that stupid song about last years Brownlow Medalist

B grade rubbish

Not bad first up effort.

Watched it specifically because McGuire wasn't on it feigning suprise when anyone complained that he went on about Collingwood too much.

Once they get rid of the McGuire homage over the next few shows, settle in, not talk over each other and get used to the new format, both Lyons and Brayshaws personality will come out and shine more.

Better for Newman to bounce off two compares as opposed to Mr Collingwood.

The players involvement seem a bit dated and need revamping somehow.

Much better effort without McGuire and his continual harping about one club and one club only.

15 groups of supporters will be happier, one group less happy.

Bad luck to the one group.

I'll give it a go for a couple of more weeks (or until League Teams comes back on Fox) :thumbsu:
