It has become apparent just how much of a success the draw has been. The second game has sold out and the true fans of each side, the members, get to attend in their droves.

So I have a suggestion. Make the grand final a best of 3 series. The first 2 can be sold to corporates etc, and then the third (if needed) won't be planned until obviously it is known the series will be 1-1 so it will sort of operate the same way as a replay with members getting the opportunity to go. This would also allow experimentation with night games and also other venues (eg a Grand final in Sydney).

And for those who still want the draw/replay aspect to it which has been such a pleasant surprise this week, if the third game is a draw we could always have a replay for that (i.e 1-1 and then decider is a draw, so you go to another game).

Your thoughts?

Having to play an extra two or three games, delayed pre-season, more chance of injury etc. Might be a win for the fans, but for the teams . . .

As it is, this year, I reckon the replay will hurt Collingwood and The Saint's chances for 2011. The Bulldogs & Geelong now have a two week head start, which might become a factor in this game of inches.

Game 1 on a Saturday Night to appease the TV Networks.
Game 2 (and 3) on Saturday Afternoon(s) to appease the traditionalists.

2 points needed to win the flag.

Win - 1 point
Draw - 0.5 points to each club
Loss - 0 points

Team A could be on 1.5 pts and Team B on 0.5 pts going into Game 3. This means Team A only needs a draw to win the flag, while Team B needs a win to force extra time... if at the end of regulation of Game 3, neither team has 2 points (due to one or more draws over the 3 games), only then is Extra Time played.

22 rounds (no split round) leaves 5 weeks of finals, plus the 'replay' week we have now. AFL Post-season would consists of 3 weeks to qualify for the GFS, then the GF series of 2 or 3 weeks. Game 2 of the GFS is always the last Saturday in September so the flag can be won on its traditional day or Game 3 on the first Saturday in October (this Saturday).

Mark my words, might not happen for 10 or 20 years, but one day this will happen. One day, because the AFL is SO money hungrey, all finals games will be a 'best of 3 series' and the Granny will be a 'best of 5 series'.

I prefer my idea of Test Match footy.
2 Games = 2 innings.
It is basically 1 match played over 8 quarters.
There should be a margin where if a team loses by too much in the first match, they cant follow onto to the second match and the premiership is decided due to a thumping in only one game. If a team loses by less than the "follow on" margin, they can play on to the next game/innings.

eg.

If a team lost the first match by 30 points all it would take is to kick the first 2 goals in the second match and reduce the margin to 18 - very managable over 4 quarters to peg that back.

Orrr.... how about this idea:

Leave other sports' "unique" ways of doing things to those particular sports, and leave the AFL be, it's fine as it is.

I know, left field idea that one.

Most cricket enthusiasts thought the same thing about the introduction of 1dayers and 20/20

Greetings JBlues

If you suggest the 'corporates' get the first two matches - there may not be a need for a third match ie a 2-0 result. So there is no gain for members.

Nah, the best way is to play a 27 hour game, with 9 hours a day over 3 days.

The game changes end at the 4.5 hour mark of each day, and there are breaks every hour, except for the half-time break which occurs 30 minutes after the last break. The half time break lasts one hour.

At the end of this if there is a draw all the players are shot and their lockers ransacked by the members of the opposing teams. The cup is melted down and turned into a doorstop in Demetriou's office.

Everybody wins.

.

The margin could act like a double chance within the the Grand Final Series.

The margin shouldn't be some random number though. I would use point differential divided by 22 games... rounded down... for each of the grand finalists, as the number of points a team can lose by and still force Game 2.

This year...

Collingwood: (2346 - 1658) / 22 = 31.27 = 31 points
St.Kilda: (1935 - 1591) / 22 = 15.64 = 15 points

So Collingwood can lose by 31 points or less and still force Game 2. For St.Kilda, its more tighter... 3 goal loss to Collingwood in Game 1 would give the Pies the flag and no Game 2.

In the unlikely event a Grand Finalist has a 100% percentage or lower, they have no 'threshold margin of loss' and need to win Game 1. If this applies to both teams, there is only one game, no Game 2.

why stop at 3?

just make them play best of 23*

*however long til the next season starts.

this would mean then each year chances are we'll get different teams in the grand final, which can only be a good thing.

I am a big fan of this idea.

In 2012 we should have an 18 round competition (each team plays each other once), 3 rounds of finals and then a best of 3 grand final.

Pros
- Even Season Fixture
- If the Grand Final series is 1-1 and the third match is a draw... the result should be determined by goal difference, goals scored etc. In the event of an unlikely draw (i.e. 3 draws... there should be extra time)
- All members will be able to get Grand Final Tickets

Yeah, this is a good idea - not sure why the AFL has never come up with it themselves. Other features from cricket could be implemented - such as allowing players to question umpiring decisions and go to the video ref. Not sure what else can be added - maybe a white ball for night games? Sherrins can be hard to see.

Yes. Lets change an overwhelmingly successful, traditional and thoroughly awesome Grand Final system which has been in place since the early 1900s (just a guess, the point remains valid), because 'it has become apparent how successful' one draw has been!

What is this, America?

I'd prefer to stick to the British methods thank you very much.

You do realise that the yanks have a one and done system to their football finals, don't you?

Or are you comparing Australian football to basketball too, like most people seem to be doing?

Besides, you would logically think that a best of 3 GF series would require a best of 3 series in all finals to maintain consistency.

Ohh, I forgot. There is no consistency in the AFL considering the existing situation of extratime in drawn finals, a replay after the 1st drawn GF, and back to extratime in the event of a drawn replay!

I did think about this.

Game 1 - Played at the lower ranked sides home state.
Game 2 - Played at the higher ranked sides home state.
Game 3 (if needed) - Played at the MCG.

The AFL definitely needs to move to 2 grand finals every year, a HOME and AWAY grand final.

We are now the Australian Football League NOT the Victorian football league. Flip a coin to see who gets home ground advantage first. It is blatantly unfair for non victorian clubs to have play the grand final at the 'G. Imagine if Fremantle actually got up to the GF this and it was a draw and had to come back. Add in the travel factor versus say Collingwood or now Melbourne walking over the bridge to the clubrooms for recovery versus two 3hour plane trips.

The MCG will get their value for money due to years with 2 victorian clubs making the GF, hence double dipping for the Grand finals that year. It has worked well in Champions league soccer etc for a very long time now. 2 legs equals greater TV rights, fans of each club get to support their team locally. It just makes sense
