There was a "top 5 AFL players ever" list that The Sunday Footy Show did a few years ago, where they compared individual top 5 lists made by each of the experts, and all of them except one had Carey ranked #1.

The opinion of this Greg Hobbs character is completely irrelevant compared to a group of legends of the game who all concur that Wayne Carey is the best player they have ever seen. Maybe Greg Hobbs just doesn't like Carey as a person for whatever reason and lets his emotions get in the way of his judgement.

There is an article in the Herald-Sun about adding a 4th interchange player to the Team of the Century, and this is a quote from Greg Hobbs, former Football Record chief writer and T.O.C selector:

"I wouldn't put carey in the second Team of the Century. I am not a Carey fan. I reckon he is not in the top 100. He is overrated to buggery"

I know people have different views on footy, but FFS - does anyone else find it astounding that anyone could have this view, let alone a guy heavily involved in footy and responsible for Team of the Cenutry selection?? I really cannot understand it.

Does he watch football, and who put him on the panel?
He also couldn't find room for any Collingwood players, as biased as they come, probably a closet Carlton supporter.

Carey i loved watching when he wasn't playing the Hawks and he tore us apart on more than one occasion and one of the best i have seen in my 45 years of watching footy

i suppose other than doing his team mates wife the only criticism i would have is on his Grand Final appearances he didn't really have any big games - in the one they lost against the crows i feel he could have tried something different when the crows had that match winning run on - he was bloody big and strong enough to run through someone to try and hold up the game a little - this is IMO only and some might agree and others disagree strongly but this is what forums are all about getting other views. especially when your team isn't playing and you dont have that emotional attachment to the game your watching

Hard to assess as a Carlton supporter as Carey never got the better of SOS.

Plus Kernahan betters him on all key stats including goals per game and (by a margin) goals per game in finals.
In fairness, the WWE have patented moves they copied from Sos, the full nelson, the body slam, the suplex etc etc.

Carey benefits from two major things.

1. He is in the media currently.
2. People in decision making/powerful positions in the present media & AFL saw him play or played against or with him.

A lot of the ranking stuff is about timing. Sure Carey was very good. But there have been plenty of good players.
Was he better than Quinlan, Wade or Kernahan? Possibly not.

Lol Kernahan isn’t even in the conversation.

Carey’s influence was so far beyond goals per game it’s embarassing to even mention it.

Your key stats don't include kicks (Carey 11.8 v Kernahan 11.2), handballs (Carey 4.7 v Kernahan 3.1), finals appearances (Carey 23 v Kernahan 18), AA nods (Carey 7(4 as Captain) v Kernahan 2) or club B&F's (Carey 4 v Kernahan 3)? Because they sure seem like key stats to me. There's plenty more as well in Carey's favour.

Considering that Carey played far more of a role around the ground than Kernahan, it's not surprising that Sticks just shades The King in goals per game in the regular season (Carey 2.7 v Kernahan 2.9). Kernahan does stretch the lead in this stat category in finals as you suggested (also not surprising though, given Carey played CHB), but is well behind Carey in other areas:

Carey average in finals: 18 disposals, 7 marks, 2.6 goals, 2 behinds, 1.2 tackles.
Kernahan average in finals: 13 disposals, 7 marks, 3.6 goals, 1.7 behinds, 0.8 tackles.

Not sure what Kernahan beats Carey in at all aside from goals, your post is a little misleading. Not to mention that none of this discusses the pure impact on a game that Carey could have. He could play any position on the ground and turn a game on it's head. This is why past players etc. talk about Carey as one of the best ever, Kernahan is rarely even mentioned.

I've thought about this before and concluded I would take Brereton in Finals over Carey. Would you agree?

There may have been an occasion or two to give you this anecdotal feeling, but overall, not a great decision:

Carey average in finals: 18 disposals, 7 marks, 2.6 goals, 2 behinds, 1.2 tackles.
Brereton average in finals: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 2.0 goals, 1.5 behinds, 0.7 tackles.

For the record, Carey had some pretty handy finals that seem to have been ignored/forgotten in this thread (noting that stats certainly don't capture his entire influence):

1994 QF v Hawks - 32 disposals, 10 marks, 4.4
1994 PF v Geelong - 24 disposals, 14 marks, 6.4
1995 QF v Richmond - 22 disposals, 9 marks, 5.4
1996 QF v Geelong - 23 disposals, 10 marks, 3.2
1996 PF v Brisbane - 24 disposals, 14 marks, 3.2
1996 GF v Sydney - 22 disposals, 9 marks, 1.3
1997 QF v Geelong - 23 disposals, 10 marks, 7.0
1997 PF v West Coast - 16 disposals, 5 marks, 2.0
1998 QF v Essendon - 24 disposals, 8 marks, 5.6
1999 QF v Port Adelaide - 24 disposals, 11 marks, 6.2
1999 PF v Brisbane - 17 disposals, 6 marks, 3.0
1999 GF v Carlton - 17 disposals, 5 marks, 2.0
