I think all this talk about how Stevic and co screwed us is just over the top. Granted the free kick count was in Collingwood's favour 15 to 20 but we lose the free kick count in every game no matter who the umpires are.
There were two vital decisions that went in OUR favour that Collingwood will be spewing about. The first one obviously is the mark that was awarded to Papley in the last 1/4 who then kicked that vital goal. Everyone in the Vic media is going on about "the push in the back to Darcy" which is incorrect. He pushed him in the side. Curious to know how the Vic media never says anything about Hawkins who constantly does push his opponent in the middle of the back yet gets away with it all the time. Anyway, I digress.
The ball clearly hit the ground on the way down yet the umpire paid it as a mark.
The other important decision that went our way was made by Stevic. The last minute of the second 1/4 with the ball 15-20 metres out of Collingwood's goal. Rowbottom was clearly caught holding the ball and should have been penalised yet Stevic called for a bounce.
So, there's two goals the umpires gifted us that made all the difference.

It was paid as high contact on Papley just to clarify, Quaynor I think it was clipped him across the head.

Don't believe the mentality of SEN. During the season they have had Sunday crunch time at 11am. So what do they do when the finals start?
Drop Crunch Time and replace it with a betting program operated by Betfair. Where is the media going?

Crunchtime on Sundays is shit compared to the great show on a Saturday , i go to AW on Sundays at midday good show apart from Slobbo

I have to admit that I have been critical that we drafted Stephens instead of Serong. At the start of this year it was looking like a terrible error but , my God, Stephens is now showing us why he was taken by us. The growth in his confidence this year has been immense.

yeah, he's improved so much
very tough, touch of class
a ripper

Clarke is not going out of the team now unless its injuries. Hope Reid pulls up okay. It was noticeable how dominant Collingwood were in the air once Reid went off. Even his ability to bring it to ground is immense. Amartey for Reid, closest like for like and better option in the ruck than mclean.
If it's dry I could see McLean in as he has a better set of mittens on him and we desperately need marking power.
TBH if Reid is out I want BOTH McLean and Amartey in. McDonald is out of form and offering nought in terms of marking, bringing it to ground.
Go in with some guys willing to smash packs and do damage if they're not marking it.

why would you mess with team chemistry now!?!

McD might be great in year or two, but is offering very little.

McLean can take a grab and keep a KPD busy. Amartey can add physical presence and good back up ruck minutes, would match up well on Blicavs in ruck - even if Reid somehow plalys I'd want him only as fwd to get through the game.

I didn't hear it that way...

I heard he (Clarke) did a great job on Daics for the first three quarters, and in the end Collingwood moved him forward for the last quarter.

Funny how two people hear the same thing and interpret it differently!
Yeah, I think I was probably just feeling a bit paranoid for Clarke. I love how he has come in. Of all our team, I think he epitomises the bloods spirit. Not wanted elsewhere, has his limitations, but works bloody hard and sacrifices himself for the team. I think you and others have made me feel more confident :)

Note: Hayden McLean and Joel Amartey have not played a game since 4 September (in losing VFL semi-final)

I was going to post Stephens' massive hard nut moment in the 4th by itself, but as I was watching it back I realised the entire play leading up to it was special. (Stuck with GIF quality until Bigfooty allows videos above like 5 seconds)

McDonald (20 years old) brings the ball to ground from Collingwood's kick-in

Rowbottom (21) crumbs the ball and chips across to Gulden (20) who quickly gives it off to Blakey (22) for the kick inside 50

Collingwood player wins the loose ball from the kick but Rowbottom (21) smothers it and causes the turnover

McDonald (20) collects it and chips it over to Campbell (20)

Campbell (20) then centres the handball culminating in Stephens (21) with the magnificent hard ball get.

Keep in mind there are 8 minutes to go in a preliminary final and every player who touches the ball in this play is 22 or under. It's remarkable and so impressive, but it's also worth remembering when you're watching this team wondering why things aren't going perfectly in the biggest game of most of their lives.

Open your eyes on Logan , he has a role and he's playing it !

I think Amartey in for McDonald was the right play (though tough call) a few weeks back.

Now it is not so straight forward, but i still think there are reasons to make a move.

I think if Reid is out then Amartey comes in. The question is whether McLean also comes in for McDonald. It would be a very tough call, but I like it for a few reasons:

1. McLean was strong against Geelong when we played them at start of year
2. McDonald not in top form
3. McLean able to support in ruck
4. Geelong have strong markers across the ground. McLean provides a better outlet than McDonald.

The arguments for keeping McDonald are:

1. Continuity and chemistry in forward line
2. McDonald more dynamic when ball comes to ground
3. McLean slower and provides less forward pressure than McDonald
4. McDonald the future and benefits most from big game experience (I don’t rate this reason).

Then there is also the question if Reid does play whether Amartey or McLean should still come in for McDonald. Same arguments above apply for McLean. On Amartey vs McDonald, I think Amartey also stands up well. Providing the ability to bring ball to ground and backup Reid in the ruck if Reid goes down, and also free up Reid to swing into loose man in defence.

Maybe to sum it up, I think Amartey gives us structure and is unlikely to lose us the game. I think at this stage in his career McDonald is unlikely to win us the game. On this basis, I think a harsh call is warranted.

If Reid plays, Amartey in for McDonald.

If Reid does not play, Amartey in for Reid and McLean in for McDonald.

But I wouldn’t blame the coaches for being more minimal - I’ll support whoever is chosen.
