Delisted/Retired:
Simmonds Brown Bowden Richo Pettifer JON Coughlan
Pattison Johnson Hughes
Traded:
McMahon to Saints for pick 17 or 33
Elevated:
Nahas Browne Silvester
Retained Rookies:
Gilligan Gourdis
Picks:
4, 17*, 21, 33*, 37, 53, 69, 85 - * depends on pick we got for McMahon.
Needs:
Key Position Forward – Butcher would be a great get, 197cm FF who has shown he can kick bags of goals even when carrying an injury. If we can’t get Trengove then I hope we take this kid will not disappoint. If we do land Trengove then hopefully someone like Griffiths is available with our second round pick.
2 Genuine Midfielders – not flankers who might play there, I’m talking genuine midfielders. Trengove would be the ultimate, but I doubt he will be there. If we were to land the Saints first rounder and took Butcher with our first pick, then I hope that we could land Stevens and Ledin. Both look likely types in my opinion.
Hard Edged Small/Midsized Defender – a bloke with the same attitude as King but with the ball use of Deledio or Cotchin would be great, but probably unrealistic. Would settle for a bloke with Kings attitude and the ability to hit targets.
Ruckman – pretty young group that we have so we need to get in another kid to start developing. Use one of our last 2 picks on this unless there is an absolute standout available earlier.
After addressing these 5 areas use any remaining picks for adding depth. Another small crumbing defensively minded forward would be handy. Wouldn’t mind adding another KPP who can play at either end.

Rance in his second season is currently 2cm taller (193cm) than Thursfield and Mcguane and 5 kg heavier lol..hardly a medium defender! He will be our full back next year and looks like he can easily get even more bigger than the other two considering he is only 19.

My thoughts are:

List Breakdown:
Key Position Defenders
Thursfield McGuane, Moore, Rance to play full back

Kicking Running Defenders = Newman (needs to become quaterback aka Luke Hodge when he plays back, give him 20 easy touches where he delivers the pill)...Edwards - Let the kid run....Polo - Tough and wouldnt mind seeing more midfield role like his debut....Raines = cannot believe ppl want to get rid of him...give him the year to get over injuries remember his lik 22 and was 2nd in Rising star in 2005

Play Rance FB McGuane on second tall and Moore as a Nick Maxwell 3rd man roll...give Newman the ball and get him to deliver...all run off the Hb line but mainly the pace of Titch and even Mcguane would worry teams..

Midfielders
Deledio Cotchin Cousins Trengove Foley Jackson Tambling Collins Tuck, Thompson (this kid top ten pick can play give him time..will love playign under hardwick)

New game plan making these guys work both ways.. This midfield is full of pace and talent...Deledio Cousins Foley Tambling cotchin are the ball users with class and jacko tuck Thompson = hard ball gets...

Rucks
Graham Vickery Pattison

Develop Vickery in the ruck he is the future. Graham has been ok but never going to dominate games. Definatley persist with Patto! First rnd pick who is still only 22 and has a huge engine...encourage him to play a Dean Cox roving roll and get 20-25 touches a game!

Key Position Forwards
Riewoldt Post Vickery Polak Gourdis Putt, Hughes ( give him one more year to see if he can turn it around as payoff would be worth it)

Mid-Small Fwds - Morton (gun...stevie j like)...nahas

Ideal setup for me:

Nahas, Polak, Morton
Post, Riewoldt, resting mid

Delisted/Retired:

Simmonds Brown Bowden Richo (hope this doesn't happen but im resigned to the fact hardwick will give him the boot).. Pettifer JON Coughlan (same as richo)..Schulz/connors (not team players)

Traded:
McMahon to Saints & pick 19 for pick there first round pick (15-17)...upgrading two picks i think its fair...

Elevated:
Nahas

Retained Rookies:
Gilligan Gourdis Browne

Picks:
4, 15, 37, 53, 69, 85

Needs: More tackling pressure....Trengove = 1 more great ball user...another good ball user off the back flank!

If post continues to come on and Polak turns out ok i think our tall fwds are set! If Hughes came good it would be a huge bonus.

Gone: Johnson, Bowden, Coughlan, Brown, Oakley-Nicholls
Going: Hughes, Schulz*, Pattison, Simmonds, Raines, McMahon*, Polak, Pettifer, Putt

* contracted for 2010

Trades(potentially): Hughes to PORT for Pick#40 or to ADEL for Pick #45
Rance + Pick #19 to HAW for Picks #9 and #25
Raines to BRIS for Pick #28 or #44

Shortlist: Targets
KPP: Nick Gill. Jason Roe, Brad Fisher, Sean Rusling, Chris Dawes, Jay Nash, Tom Lonergan, Beau Dowler, Corey Jones, Max Hudghton, Matt Maguire, Henry Playfair

Rucks: Jonathon Griffin, Shaun Hampson, Mark Blake, Max Bailey, Mark Jamar, Wayde Skipper, Mark Seaby, Jamie Charman

Pretty much all those targets you listed are absolutly useless. The only ones you would consider are Dowler, Hampsen and Griffin and they are highly unlikely to be traded

Tenace, Roe???

Tenace is an out and out hack and Roe is a serviceable player at best, not the players we need if we are to create a premiership team, the wallace era of topping up with other teams rejects are long gone

I have just completed an interesting review of our lists effective use of the football. The result is a fascinating scenario that clearly shows we could be as good if not better than the best teams if the bottom half of our list improved their disposal efficiency.

Firstly lets look at the 2 teams who most would consider as being the best users of the footy in the AFL, St Kilda and the Bulldogs.

The Saints have 6 players (Baker 84%, Blake 90%, Fisher 81%, Gilbert 80%, Hudghton 91% & Dawson 90%) who have a disposal efficiency above 80%. They have 4 regulars (Ball 69%, Gram 67%, Milne 63% & Riewoldt 66%) who average under 70% efficiency. Therefore the majority of the team's best 30 players hit a target with at least 3 out of 4 attempts.

The Bulldogs have 5 players (Cross 83%, Lake 84%, Morris 89%, Tiller 84% & Williams 82%) who have a disposal efficiency above 80%. They have 4 players (Boyd 69%, Hudson 69%, Murphy 69% & Ward 68%) who average under 70%. The difference between the Dogs best and worst is 14% efficiency or 1.4 disposals out of every 10 missing a target.

Now if you look at the tigers...

From an incredibly positive perspective we have 10 players (Silvester 81%, Connors 86%, Graham 81%, King 81%, McGuane 80%, Moore 83%, Newman 83%, Polo 83%, Thursfield 85% & Vickery 90%) whose disposal efficiency is above 80%. Granted some of these guys absolutely butcher the ball when they do turn it over (see king, polo) and some haven't played many games this season (see connors, silvester) but we still have many players who are capable of consistently hitting targets under the pressure of AFL football.

Conversely this season we have had 9 players, many of whom are considered vitally important who have a disposal efficiency of less than 70%. (Edwards 69%, Cotchin 67%, Jackson 67%, JON 63%, Post 67%, Richo 63%, Riewoldt 59% & Nahas 67%). The difference between our most efficient player and least efficient player is 31% or 3.1 effective disposals. More importantly it is our backline who regularly hit targets and our mids and forwards who continually turn it over.

From a list management perspective we need to look at which players have the capacity to improve their disposal and work religiously on getting it right. Those who cannot fix this problem need to be traded away in return for opposition players who can dispose of the football but are lacking opportunity or for kids who can use it already.

Last year we were contested ball specialists and this year we have not been too bad either but we continually turn the ball over when attacking and it leaves our defenders completely out of postion going the other way. Picking stronger bodies or completely turning over the list may not in fact be the answer. Rather we just need to recruit some genuinely skillful players, work on improving our ball getting players efficiency and getting rid of those who are not capable of hitting targets at pace or under pressure.

Your thoughts...

I think what you have found does carry some merit (unlike a lot of the dribble on this site). True, you can make statistics dance to suit your needs but I think you have highlighted how games, essentially are won and lost in the midfield.

Who would want to be a backmen at Richmond? Just with the weight of numbers in terms of FW50 entries of course teams are going to beat us. The turnovers always happen with the second kick. The defenders would hit their target and it was the next play where the ball would get turned over. Of course, there would be times where Rance would scuff a kick, or Moore miss a handpass but that happens for every side. It was the next passage of play through the middle 50. And of course when you turn it over here all your players are running forward. And this probably highlights another problem. We have a team of "give it to mes" rather than a team that runs like a pack through the middle. Just watch how Adelaide do it. They protect the ball carrier.

So what do we need? Hardwick will identify our hardness or lack thereof around the ball through the middle of the ground. How many times have you watched games where teams have just sailed through the middle of the ground with virtually no opposition to hit up a fast leading forward lace out. No wonder McGuane looks as angry as he does all the time.

And the other way, teams know that if they put enough physical pressure on Richmond when they have the ball through the middle, we turn it over.

So don't worry about getting a forward with the first pick, we will be going for the best available midfielder. This will depend on what Melbourne does. My feeling is that they will go for a midfielder and a key position player with their first two picks.

Delist:

JON, Brown, Coughlan, Johnson, Simmonds, Bowden, Polak, Pettifer, Hughes.

Trade (in an ideal world all would go, but realistically only 1, maybe 2 would attract interest):

Tuck, Raines, Moore, McMahon.

In terms of trade targets, due to the number of delistings, we would probably be looking at retreads from other clubs. I only raise these as possibilities, remember last year there were only 8 trades in all of trade week.

Tuck (Syd) - Would slot straight into the midfield, a 2nd rounder or Vespremi would suffice (may be a reach, but any less I wouldn't bother). His efforts are there, but doe not impact on games and disposal is a worry.

McMahon (St Kilda) - Do the Saints really want him? Take anything they offer. A 3rd rounder? What would we have to do to take Armitage off their hands?

Moore (Haw) - 25 years old. Won't be part of our next premiership. Can play tall or small. Hawks would like him due to his recent efforts on Buddy. A swap for Mitch Thorp perhaps? High risk high reward trade.

Raines (Bris): 3rd Rounder.

Rookie Upgrades: Browne, Nahas
Rookies Retained: Gourdis, Gilligan
Rookies Delisted: Silvestor
International Rookie: James O'Reilly

Not counting any trades, that's 9 delistings, 2 rookie upgrades, meaning 6 National draft picks, 1 PSD pick and 3 rookie picks.
