There isn't a precedent for it because to my knowledge it's never actually happened. But, we all know what happens to bad boys who make the AFL look bad...
The other option, as explored by a couple of players in the past, is to retire, which pretty much turns you into a free agent.

If Kelly doesn't re-sign then his only option to move clubs would be through the PSD, and once he nominates there's nothing stopping a Fremantle or a St. Kilda from drafting him.

He'd be legally obliged to move, it would be a condition you'd have to agree to prior to nominating to enter the draft. Not sure what ramifications he'd face but it would be more than just a slap on the wrist; probably would be banned from being registered as an AFL player in the future.

Luke Ball did exactly that, when he nominated Collingwood in the PSD, he just nominated terms that only Collingwood could meet.

He could do a McCarthy and sit out a year of football- no one, not even the AFL, can force someone to work against their will but they can prevent them from working for anyone else in that industry.

Kelly has three options :
1) Stay at Geelong
2) Ask to be traded to West Coast (or Fremantle) and hope that a deal gets sorted
3) Go back into the draft with nominated contract conditions that need to be met by whoever drafts him and take his chances that he lasts to either Fremantle or west coast

Geelong will be hoping that he’s happy to go to Fremantle because they have better trade chips (higher draft picks and tradeable players like BHill and Langdon) and they wouldn’t be strengthening a rival contender

They won’t want to risk him walking to the draft because then they get nothing in return however I doubt Kelly would risk going to the draft and getting picked up by a non-WA club

I think we also lack depth in the attacking d50 rebound space

Both hurn and jetta are coming to an end - probably by end of next year

Who do we have that is a laser weapon off half back to follow?

We have guys like rotham, watson, duggan, nelson - but none that would strike fear for their attacking credentials.

Young and Sharp are probably the players I want at West Coast for this very reason.

I feel O'Neill was drafted for the Hurn role. I hear he is very highly rated inside the club. Was equal first in the kicking test at the draft combine and is supposedly a very good decision maker. I admittedly haven't watched him in the WAFL enough to comment further.

Surely Rotham is the Hurn replacement

Could be the great man himself Schoey's replacement.
Good size, good pace, athletic with excellent composure and decision making under pressure.

Alternatively Duggo fights for a midfield spot and Rotham slots into the Duggo role as 3rdish tall.

In no universe is Duggan getting cycled out of the side for Rotham. If Liam cant crack the midfield then he goes back to his tried-and-true role, and Rotham sits in the 2s.

Rotham needs to command selection over an established player like Hutchings. The kid has shown flashes of class, but nothing so far that dislodges a Best 22 player.

I don't think you understood he said duggo moves to midfield and rotham takes his spot in the backline.

On 360 last night, Nick Reiwoldt said Richmond "are clearly the best side in the comp".

Even Robbo said he didn't think they were clearly better than us.

I can understand if he said "they're my favourites", or something along those lines.

Geelong supporters must be bemused as well.

Would love to see them drop outside the 4 and get knocked out in week 1.

When Robbo challenged Riewoldt, his response was that the Tigers' game style was 'more sustainable'. Seriously, do these guys forget that we won the flag?

Geez McLure was pretty hot on Carlton last night, seemed quietly(in fact loudly) confident they could beat the Eagles.

Now I really want to win by 10+ goals.
Then like to hear what he says next week about his awesome Blues, which they probably wouldn't then talk about.

Just include clauses specifically Perth related and goodluck to everyone else not named West Coast or Freo :p

"I specify that I must only be drafted by an AFL team from Western Australia for family reasons, and that team must not have purple in its team colours because it negatively affects my colour-blindness which I picked up at the end of the season due to an onfield incident".

“More sustainable”. So a side who’s game plan is based on manic pressure and intensity, with flick handballs and taps that are sketchy, at best, whether they go in the intended direction.. is more sustainable than a side that hits targets by foot very consistently, disallowing the opposition any possession of the ball (and there’s a couple of similar sides around now as well). Righto Nick

100% plus it makes for ugly viewing I can’t stand watching the Tigers play

Indeed is so sustainable that every club (St Kilda, Collingwood, Freo, Richmond) who tries drops off after a year or two (or changes gameplan) because they can't sustain it.

Roos and his disciples have a lot to answer for.

Elsewhere, premiership-winning Tigers Josh Caddy and Dan Butler are back, as are Brisbane's Harris Andrews, Eagle Shannon Hurn, Collingwood's Taylor Adams, Giant Brett Deledio and Melbourne's Jake Melksham.

We have three premiership winning players possibly coming back in this week, afl.com.au editor.

Could be remembering very wrongly, but wasn't there an idea floating around at some stage to make PSD picks tradeable? With the idea being that it would give whichever club finished on the bottom of the ladder a bit more currency that they could trade into national draft picks? i.e. you could trade pick 1 in the PSD for pick 20 in the national draft? Or does this all sound like a dream I had?

I got the opposite impression that when talking about West Coast he said it was more sustainable. It was a sort of in limbo statement as you weren't sure which team he applied it to

No limbo statement at all.

Robin asked him why Richmond we're clearly the best and he replied as above.
