With two evenly matched sides in the Saints and Cats, there is a possibly however slight that the match may result in a draw. If this comes to pass, which of the broadcast networks would telecast the Grand Final replay?

Seven, because this is considered an "alternate GF", meaning Ten gets the 2010 Grand Final again,

or Ten, because this is considered a continuation of the 2009 GF?

Gillon Mclachlan, if you're reading this, what is the offical answer?

The last time there was a replay of any match, it was when 7 had exclusive rights. It was Collingwood vs West Coast in 1990, iirc. Collingwood smashed them in the replay, and the fact of the replay meant Essendon had three weeks off before the GF rather than 2, and consequently were very underdone in the GF and lost.

Just off the top of my head...

It would be writen into the contracts, but my guess would be that it would be broadcast by the same network that broadcast the original match.

Obviously this will never ever happen, but what would happen if there were continous draws and the replays ended up stretching on past when the 2010 season was supposed to start?

LOL... I don't think we're really gonna have to worry about 30 draws in a row:eek:

Anyway, I'm fairly certain that the AFL allow only 1 official replay. If the 2nd game is tied, I think it goes into extra time.

Just wait for the farce that will happen when we get the next replay. I can guarantee it will be the last grand final replay you ever see.

Agree :thumbsu:

Fans book travel from around Australia and the world to attend. Most can't afford or don't have the time off to do it again the following week. Furthermore (and more importantly), teams are coached and managed to peak at precisely the right time. Players shouldn't have a single ounce of energy left in the tank when the siren goes. It would be a joke it they have to recover and do it again in seven days.

Not to mention (probably more from a footy club's perspective), post game functions, family days (like the Saints next Sunday at Etihad), another week of media commitments etc. It would be a nightmare.

As far as I'm aware, no other sport in the world replays the entire final game in the event of a tie (other than the US Open golf). It should be decided by extra time.

Hell... tied NFL games (and the Superbowl) are sudden death - first team to score wins, which more often than not means the season is decided by the flip of a coin to determine first possession!

I like the idea of the time keeper not blowing the siren until a team is in front. So a game might go for an extra 30 seconds, or an extra 5 minutes. Still reckon thats better than extra time....

The AFL should just change it so if there is a draw in the GF then it's extra time.

Agree, it's a big enough fiasco trying to get tickets as it is and with the interstate clubs now in the comp it's a massive financial burden just getting there for some. Imagine if the Swans and Eagles drew a couple of years ago.

Collingwood belted Essendon in the semi final (which is where the Bombers would have been underdone rather than the GF), Bombers smashed West Coast in the PF. I think Essendon may have organised a scratch match against Fitzroy during the finals because of their extended break, after having also rested several players in the final H&A round. But yes, this is why why the AFL changed the rule on replays/drawn games in the finals.
