How about we do some sort of all star game! No I don't mean like the 2008 game or the legends matches, I'm talking about something new and exciting. Here's how it could work:
-midway through the season every team has a bye
-two coaches and whoever they want as assistance are selected to coach the different teams
-then we have pretty much a school yard type situation, one of the coaches picks a player, the other picks a player and so on
-both coaches pick 27 players, having 6 on the bench instead of 4 and 3 emergency's in case a player gets a mysterious "niggle" which just happens to keep them out for a week
-if any fit player declines the great offer to play then he and his coach get a $15,000 fine, don't want all the good players getting told by their coach they can't play
-every player is given $5000 dollars for playing, just to say thanks

I'm ok with the concept but I think the issue is the AFL is all about the clubs. I am worried coaches and players would just wear fines as a badge of honour and would be hard to police. To work I believe coaches and players would have buy in. Doesnt mean it isnt a good idea though.
Apparently there is something called state of origin going on next to spotless tonight and assume this is the motivation. As much as I dislike talking other codes I cant get interested in league. I will watch and may attend rugby tests though and do enjoy them as an international fix.

Okay, then you get 2 teams of players half assing it because a) they want the byes b) they don't want to get injured c) they don't want to cop a stupid fine.

Let it go.
Then they get embarrassed on live TV and everyone can see what type of person they really are. If they really love the game they would play regardless, not act like a bitch cause they don't want to get hurt. Doesn't every AFL listed player want to play as many games as possible?

Seriously how many people do you think will get injured? And it's not like a team will suddenly lose every game if a player got injured, if they were any good they would have the depth to replace him.
If rugby league teams can get over the fact that someone may get hurt and that's the risk they take then why can't the AFL? It just makes us look weak as piss

But if say Buddy Franklin for example goes down with a season ending injury in an essentially meaningless mid-season game and the swans drop from top 2 too 4/5th, we will never hear the end of it. Im not saying Im against the idea because it would be a great spectacle if it occurred, but there are just too many issues in the way.

Its also much different in Rugby League. State of Origin is really the biggest even on the calendar for them. Kids grow up dreaming of playing origin and if a club said they weren't letting a player go and play in it they would get laughed at and the player would play anyway. Its not that we are weak, its just different values.

Yep, every year around NRL SOO time this gets brought up.
It works in League because there is still really only 2 states that play the game and the passion runs high.
And New Zealand (Tonie Carroll / Brad Thorn)
And PNG (Adrian Lam)
Hell they can't even get their "State of Origin" right (Greg Inglis / Peter Sterling)

It's a bloody farce.

Team success is irrelevant in Rugby League, it is solely a vehicle for advertising and betting.
Just another reality TV show.

AFL season is just way too long (including pre-season comp and finals) for any kind of rep matches imo.

NRL is longer and not only has Origin but tests and City / Country thrown in the rep footy mix to boot.

Don't follow NRL but that's crazy, what would the maximum number of matches a player could play then in one year if he fronted up for all reps plus finals - or does that not happen?
