Or would you rotate the grand final among the states, where Victoria gets it every second year, WA and SA every six years, and NSW and QLD every 12 years. My only objection to rotating would be that it'd be a shame if a grand final between Fremantle and West Coast fell at the SCG, Adelaide vs. Port GF at the Gabba etc., instead of the teams home state.

You could argue the same for two Victorian sides at the MCG, but at the latest, you'd have to determine the GF venue before the first round of finals.

Well you can't. It's not going to happen until after 2058 at the earliest, and nor should it . So not sure why some go on and on about it. Deal with it.

The grand final being at the MCG every year is certainly a disadvantage. It was smart of WA to make Optus stadium dimensions the same.

But the dimensions aren't the same.
Optus is 5m longer and 10m narrower.

This is clearly an unusual year, and stakeholders will be more willing to be adaptable.

Even with this though, the AFL has given themselves ~7 weeks rather than the 4 suggested here, and even with that, there was undoubtedly a lot of prep work done before that.

The *event* takes massive planning, negotiation and stakeholder involvement.

No! How much 'advantage' should the team that finishes top get? They already get a home final for their first game and have to play against the side that finished 4th, whereas the side that finished second has to play against the side that finished 3rd. Then they get the double chance as well in case they lose.

After the first game all games should be played at the most neutral ground that can hold a big crowd.

To give a non AFL example for those who think it's easy to move a huge event.

The boss of the Australian open had an interview a few weeks back. Since this all went down, his team have been working through it all, and came up with 5 plans for next year. Same as usual, smaller crowds, moving the date, no crowd (tv only) & cancelling.

They've been working on ALL of these for months.

None of their plans involve playing anywhere other than Melbourne.

Sure, the GAMEs can be moved easily enough...all you need is a court, right? but moving the EVENT was just a level of complexity that wasn't ever going to get past preliminary stages.

Sure, there are plenty of differences between AFL and tennis, but the point is, the EVENT matters, and they aren't easy to just pack up and move.

If you were to rotate it, you’d really have to use the premier from the previous season to allow sufficient time for planning.

People to buy tickets, book travel, plan for public transport or accommodation requirements.

Doing all that 4 weeks out in a normal season would be horrendous.
