This thread got really boring pretty quickly with a lot of the debate about nation of origin, etc.

Back on topic - seems we are hedging against Steene not making it and Condon not returning from US. And probably the expectation that Begg didn't make it.

Not sure what other options were out there since we seemed to have picked the eyes out of the mature agers already with Sully, Bytel, and Eyre preseason.

We SHOULD recruit assuming Condon won’t ever be a Collingwood player. Would be nuts to leave a spot open for him, we can cross that bridge if it ever happens.

But cox is retiring soon and Cameron is approaching 30 so it makes sense to have a few candidates on the list for when they are retired or even just injured more often. Smit most likely is just replacing Begg who will either have to reinvent himself as a kpp or perhaps find another club.

I think Roo is stamping Begg's papers. Younger, bigger, and more promising (IMO)

Agree
And I would think we would recruit a 22-25 yo ruck from another club at years end

We may have taken the best available and not cared about what position they play considering how hard it is to find a good player in the MSD.

Looks like a great pick.

Smit, Shulz, Krueger, De Goey, are we relocating to Amsterdam? Or PieterMaritzberg?

Another Hine special : no I dont mean he will slot in on a half back flank as a running defender, just he will give value. Hoping he will form a devastating ruck combo with Eyre and Begg for the next decade...

It’s so we can develop Steene as a forward/ruck and Smit as a ruck/forward.

He’s got a website about himself!?
It is like a resume, so well done to him.

It showcases how much he wants to be given a chance, if he is willing to put himself out there like that.

Small minded people will look down on this and find a fault but looking through my employer lens, I love the fact he is having a crack.
I have admiration for him, for placing himself in a position to be ridiculed, in the hope of being seen by the right person.

He believes in himself, wants a chance and has obvious drive.

Well done young man, welcome to Collingwood and good luck to you :thumbsu: .

I agree. Good on him for putting himself out there & giving himself every opportunity to attain his dream.

In his interview, Dekka talks about the kid working with Oscar.
Probably doesn't bode well for Beggy, but Steene they are happy with (from what Ive been told)

they probably view Steene as that ruck forward option and Smit as the future number 1 ruck. both can take a mark so they will be able to alternate roles. 2025 will be the year they get to develop in their roles together. exciting future there

Beggs only chance is to play as a key back, was always undersized playing the ruck role, which he was basically having to do with our lack of talls. hope he gets another year to develop in that role

At Begg’s height at best you’d want him spending 5 minutes a quarter in the ruck at senior level. That doesn’t fit with how we currently split the ruck minutes. If Begg is retained Smit’s recruitment allows us to try developing Begg as a key back or forward.

Calling him Roo doesn’t fit well at Collingwood.

My suggestions

Larry
smitty
Or an obscure 80s tv reference
