ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon says "there is no doubt" the Western Bulldogs will start favourites against the Saints in next Saturday's clash at Docklands.
Seriously, you are undefeated and have 16 wins in a row....Don't make these friggin' statements because you SHOULD win and are in no way, shape or form underdogs. You cannot go in as underdogs when you are undefeated.

While there is no denying the saints will still go in favorites what he has done is take the pressure off the players and the expectation that they will go through undefeated.

It was interesting listening to hird outline his own experience in getting to this stage of the season undefeated.

His reasoning . . .

"We've got a short break. They played Friday and we played the last game of the round," Lyon said following St Kilda's 57-point win over Adelaide at Docklands on Sunday.

"Me sitting here objectively, it's going to be a big ask. How are our legs going to be?

"We're going to be under real pressure in the running stakes, because they're as strong a running team in the competition as there is."

Thats what he was trying to do against us.
We were coming back from Perth after a grueling match against Geelong the week before, Adelaide had a training drill against Fremantles 3rds. You should have be favourites or atleast 50/50.

Doggies will be a tough match next week, if our guys are tired or not switched on the Doggies are quite capable of cutting us to shreds, even if down by 5-8 goals at 3/4 time.

It's working for them so far, ain't it?

Every week Lyon has pumped up the chances of the opposition team. Why do you think that is? Perhaps so his team doesn't become complacent? To stave off a form slump?

What a terrible idea, he'd be much better off declaring that all was going great, and taking his team to the movies instead of training, don't you think?

Still he must be doing something right. I don't care if he isn't the sharpest media performer.

Fair call. they are ultra fit. big test. dogs lost to cats by a single point. no reason why it shouldnt be 50/50 or dogs favs

Haha...I had a little chuckle myself about that when I read it...First time a 16-0 team will go into a game underdogs!

Maybe Ross should declare that "we're coming" instead. Seems to work for others team. :)

what he said.. :thumbsu:

Oh, here we go - it worked on this guy - well done Ross Lyon. :thumbsu:

why does it upset you so?

ok, your own coach sooks after a loss and gives no credit to the opposition and searches for excuses when hes been shown up in the box (see Hawks GF day.....they smacked bumber..) - who cares?

16-0 - Im happy to follow Lyons style.:thumbsu:

Whoa! Take it easy fella, it was joke about the fact that your team is absolutely flying, convincingly undefeated, yet still trying to claim underdog status. As for bomber, he's made no excuses, he's probably one of the least spin driven media performers.

You can follow Lyon all day long, underdog status is a good tactic, but at 16-0 it's not believable anymore, the opposition won't believe it, you can't logically believe it, and sooner or later the players won't believe it - a good time for plan B from his book of motivation.

I'm more sick of the usless stats coaches bring up about how young or inexperienced their list is.

Ross is simply showing the opposition respect.

Class bloke. :thumbsu:

Exactly, this is more of a wake-up call to the group, letting them know that they shouldn't take the match lightly.

I expect they won't. We will truly find out on Saturday night whether or not the saints have what it takes this year...

To put aside a real challenger with such ease is awe-inspiring. Geelong (or whoever else) will have to play out of their skins to beat this team come deep in September. No obvious weakness and with no place for players like Ball, Goose or Armitage.
