5 day turn around in games will be a nightmare for the WA sides.
Bonus for the non travelling Vic sides
Maybe time to get an interstate base maybe attached to a private school which will have holidays soon, or somewhere? Play two away games within the week and fly home for two in a row.

At the very least they should be timetabling us to play Brisbane and Gold Coast on the same mini tour. And Adelaide and Port.

Can't help but quietly speculate to myself, if the season going ahead will somehow increase AFL's profile internationally.

Basically every other ball sport on the face of the earth has been cancelled both here and overseas, and a good portion of the world's population are now stuck at home with bugger all to do.

That's an awful lot of sports fans with nothing to watch, and an awful lot of dead air that the world's broadcasters now have to fill with something mildly entertaining.

If the AFL aren't calling up TV execs worldwide right now, and offering all those networks overseas viewing rights for free, then we need to sack the lot of them.

Good plan but isn't there already some subscription service with the rights for overseas broadcasts?

USA deal is with Fox. Most games are shown on Fox Soccer Plus which is an expensive add on that not many people get. They should try to get more games on other Fox channels and replays at good times (live = most people are asleep).

The logistics of keeping travelling teams healthy will be nearly impossible.
Airports, planes,accommodation , transport , food. etc,etc.
Mission impossible for Freo and WC.

The logistics of keeping any team healthy will be nearly impossible. I think most people are realists in that the season MIGHT last this round, at best round 2 and then its shutdown for a while.

With Tasmania placing domestic visitors in quarantine will the games be cancelled in Tasmania.

Wow, good on Tasmania for stepping up when the Australian Gov hasn't. But yes, all games in Tasmania will need to be cancelled. Must be one of the only places in the world to put in a domestic quarantine ban so early, but thats the advantage of being an island!

Why would they bother having TAS games with no crowds? It would be two teams travelling and therefore increase the risk so they won't.

They mentioned on footy classified last night Freo playing Melboune games then travelling to Tasmania to play their Tassie game.
Hawks and North have games scheduled in Tassie.

Just for perspective...

I am living overseas on an island in the Caribbean. I have been longing for round 1!

The Cayman Islands had a passing cruise ship drop off an Italian man with heart issues. Turns out he was also carrying the virus. 1 week later he died from it, and we are all awaiting the results from hospital staff who are now sick.

Within a week, all schools have closed for 6 weeks, all cruise ships have been banned for 60 days, We could see 15,000 visitors a day, all flights will be shutdown by game day. Restaurants and bars will close Sunday too. No public gatherings beyond 50. 80% of the hotels have closed. Their staff jobless. Big name brands like Marriot and the Ritz.

We all work from home, most anyway.

The irony is that WA has more cases than here, It’s a pipe dream to think there will be any form of footy in 2020, maybe a few games but if the AFL thinks teams will be flying in groups all around the place a month from now they are in la la land.

Stay safe guys and gals.

Stopping the league for 14 days once someone tests positive is crazy, surely that won't continue. In a month or 2 that rule will change as long as all 18 clubs have enough healthy players to field a full team.

If Switkowski had tested positive there would be no footy this weekend. One fringe player getting sick shouldn't stop 18 teams from playing.

Before I was thinking there was no more risk for players playing footy than whatever socialising etc they'd be doing if they weren't playing.

Now, given the latest isolation measures that clubs are taking, I'm strongly in the it's a far higher risk for them not to be playing. They have been put in a controlled environment. Their chances of being exposed to COVID-19 as individuals are now orders of magnitude lower than a typical member of the public.

The greatest risk is if a player had it (pre isolation), they didn't identify it and then it spreads throughout an isolated community - like the Cayman Islands were understandably worried about when the 68yo Italian arrived with it on a cruise ship. Given they've tested some AFL players already that seems unlikely.

Personally I'm actually pretty impressed with the AFL (it's rare I know). They haven't taken the easy road. They've really thought about what is in the best interests of their industry (eg the people whose livelihoods depend on it not just now but into the future) whilst also putting in measures that reduce the risk to players et al. Sure there is a bit of sacrifice but I think that will prove a small price to pay in the long run.

On the pressing pause for two weeks if someone tests positive... I think it is sensible to set that expectation but like we've seen already things can change and be reassessed quickly - I'm sure they'll weigh up the risk at the time and make sure the actions are sensible given the scenario.

This will be a problem if there isn't room in hospital for our players.
Did they provide the percentage of cases per age range?

87% of our cases in Australia are in that 20-59yo age range. We'd probably only need 19 cases (6%) of those 20-59yo to be hospitalised to create that 40%.

That's not what will happen, there will be room for our players - not that many of them will get it anyway.

The people that get pushed out are the older ones

I'm not convinced our medical system will take someone off a machine prior to their death to give it to a younger person, there was an average 11 day hospital stay for people who died, which means if there is a rush on services then it's possible, even likely, that young people will die in waiting for a machine to open up. They will just get first dibs on the equipment when the person currently using it dies/recovers.

But that's what has happened all around the world?

The old were literally taken off ventilators and it was given to younger, healthier people. The same would happen here

Not that it matters, AFL players are not going to end up in hospital needing a ventilator
