Drop Dhoni, play Pant as keeper.
That should be the next step but no way the selectors will do that with WC just one year away ! Even Dinesh Karthik has been performing well so it's not like we lack wicket keepers.

Main thing we will miss from Dhoni when he goes away is, his leadership and his keeping skills. Kohli is a very bad leader and it will certainly be exposed when MSD is dropped/retired. But Dhoni's batting lately has been painful to watch.

England have just recalled Adil Rashid, even though he ruled himself out of first-class/red-ball cricket. Astounding.

Yeah I think this is ridiculous - and this is coming from someone who has always liked Ed Smith.

Selection is never as straight forward as the peanut gallery loves to claim, but unlike their recent left-field success story in Buttler he has actively ruled himself out of first class cricket. Barely a week ago he turned down the chance to turn out for Yorkshire in a county match when they had no spinner available thus had to recruit in a short term loan player.

It's very, very harsh on the likes of Bess & Leach who haven't put a foot wrong in their early efforts in the side and whilst I also share the view that leg spinners are a special species, by now Rashid has adapted his abilities to the requirements of one day cricket to the detriment of his long form skills. So I just can't see him threatening the Indian lineup in test match conditions anyway.

Porter would be very unlikely to play, but a nice reward for sustained performance as a quality seamer.

Good to have you back Hellgood :).

It seems like because of England's "heatwave" the pitches are actually going to suit spin. England could go in with both Moeen and Rashid?

Yeah it was a good break haha, wanted to give it up to focus more on other things going on in life. The lengths I was going to in order to "fit" social media into my day was just getting too much. Work a lot less taxing at the moment so inevitably drawn back in to reading and arguing shit about sport online!

Sounds like it's a certainty they'll both play now. Moeen's a good cricketer, but I think they're being overly optimistic expecting him to bring over his one day form as his work in tests has been dire for about a year now.

Weather has been freaking nuts over here. People are getting like it's Perth at the end of summer: pissed off with the endless heat. So planning on dustbowls probably isn't the worst idea.

England win toss and bat first.

Harsh call to drop Pujara and play Dhawan instead ! Atleast Pujara will tire the bowlers and protect the batsmen. Rahul and Vijay opening and Pujara at 1 down would have been good.

And Pandya is a pathetic player in tests. Offers nothing with bat and ball. Would have played Kuldeep instead of him.

Agree I’d much rather Pujara over Dhawan. Both have been in poor form though so you could make a case for either one of them.

I reckon Pandya‘s done alright in his short test career. He’s crucial from a balance perspective on these overseas tours so I think we need to offer him more opportunities at this point.

Given Pandya is playing is it a bit surprising India haven't gone a second spinner as opposed to 3 front line seamers?
Not really. Cannot drop any of the three pacers as Pandya's bowling is not reliable. Once Pandya's place was confirmed, it was just a question of which lone spinner it will be between kuldeeep and Ashwin and as expected India went ahead with Ashwin.

I love Umesh but his bowling isn't that reliable either - nor is Ishant's. I'd have loved to watch Ashwin/Kuldeep spin a web around this lot.

True if you put it in that way. But I guess it was a bit of a risk to go with only 2 pacers considering we are playing in England.

Ishant had a good county season in England and Umesh is in good form. If Shami finds his form, he is gold. If we had Bhuvi, we could have gone with only two pacers as Bhuvi offers more control than the rest.

F***in hell England are pants.

Root and Bairstow for the most part are the only batsmen you'd have a Skerrick of faith in to bat for your life, stokes has a bit of an excuse I guess but hasn't got out of second gear. Anderson and Broad are their only chance of competing if they can't pull something out of their arse with the bat.

Glad you were wrong haha

Haha yeah. Kohli's amazing run out changed the momentum. Hope we can wrap things up quickly and restrict them to below 300. If it wasn't for the dropped catch in last over, we could have bowled them out on the first day itself.

Shami and Ashwin bowled really well. Now, it's upto batsmen to step up and perform.
