Pirates is as lame as Power. Could at least go for Marauders or something if we wanted that theme. Do we have to alliterate? Power at least sounds cool when chanted.

The Raiders worked because they had skeletor as an owner who genuinely earned his team the rep they had. Something we have lacked.

99% nicknames are kinda lame if we are honest.

I'd be happy with just the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Pirates was a massive marketing opportunity lost. Not only that, but the Jolly Roger is literally black and white, and countless amounts of varying sizes being waved in the crowd would have been a sight to behold.

This is one of the traditional off season threads.

I'd rather we stick with:
1. Let's change our Coach.
2. Let's change our President.

I think a lot of the other discussion would fade away if we achieved any sort of real sustained success.
The only real discussion about colours etc should be around the Prison Bars and clearly that is not something the current admin cares about.

It seems ... lazy (and IMHO cringeworthy)

I was there that night when we unveiled our Guernseys, logo & mascot - and I must admit I left flat.
I honesty thought we'd just add silver as our predominant second colour, black as the main with white as the minor colour.

At the time, we we switched out white for silver bars the home jumper, I think a lot of supporters would've been ok/happy - not so now...
As a club, we were using these 3 colours for a while (remember the jackets we wore in the late 80's / 90's)

Somewhere along the way, we got marketing campaigners involved, and teal became a colour!
I remember at the time, these same marketing 'gurus' were saying teal was going to be the big thing, as from memory there was a NFL franchise (Carolina Panthers) & a NBA franchise (Charlotte Hornets) that started around the same time we did and used teal (although not the putrid 'green teal' we used - there's was more blue)

As you've probably gathered - I don't like teal either. One of the reason why I like our current away jumper - not teal!

As a nickname/mascot, as the time I was happy if we'd called ourselves the Raiders.
Still do, as I think that's waaay better than Power

Although I must admit, Admirals isn't a bad suggestion - better than anything else suggested in the thread so far...

Teal works fine with black and white when used in limited doses like on our current logo and home guernsey. It's only a problem when it gets splashed as the main colour. In fact, as much as we broadly don't like teal because it represents a forced compromise, I think if you take that aspect out then our colours are close to the best in the league.

Although I must admit, Admirals isn't a bad suggestion - better than anything else suggested in the thread so far...

I can image all the Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral jokes. The Admiral is also a butterfly. All that goes to show is it doesn't matter what nickname you choose there is always downside.

Stick with the Power. One of the pluses put forward when we adopted the Power nickname was it was two syllables and easy to chant. You don't establish a tradition by changing your club image every few years.

Pirates may have been a better way to go, but I can recall supporters in the area between the two grandstands chanting `Black and White Power' and `Maggies Power' in games at Alberton as early as the late 1960's early 1970's, so the name Power for the AFL team didn't surprise me greatly, even though I have been told by someone who should know that those chants had nothing to do with the official cheer squad, who were always situated along the fence in front of the scoreboard.

As for references to `Port Power,' which for many of us is annoying, the club actually marketed itself along those lines very early in our AFL journey.

I have one of my son's old school books in a carton somewhere that has an AFL sanctioned sticker with `port POWER' at the top with the clenched fist holding the lightning bolt below it, and the lower case for `port' and the upper case for `POWER' is exactly how it is printed.
That sticker came in a pack bought from the club's stand at the Adelaide Show, and in hindsight its only saving grace now is the bottom half area surrounding the clenched fist and lightning bolt shows vertical black and white stripes reminiscent of the PB's.

I find Pirates too cartoonish and lame. Always have. There is also the issue that there is (and was at the time) an existing Port Adelaide Pirates - the local soccer club. Imagine the community outrage if we'd bullied and trampled over their rights. Greg Griffin probably would have led an injunction to stop us doing it - with the overwhelming support of most of the SA population

Would also consider Port Adelaide Human Beings, because Koch is roughly as incompetent and untethered as Craig Pelton.
