Actually the mob asleep at the wheel would be the club break the interchange cap.Happy to wear the result of the today before anyone sooks, but that makes too much sense. AFL asleep at the wheel as usual.
And get the other team one kick away from their forwardline? That's never a good idea. What happens if a player does a hammy with a bit more time in the game to go and ball is up the other end?

Then you'd have to play with a man down in the last few minutes. Not saying it's a great idea, just asking what do you with a player that's pinged a massive hammy.

I don't understand why it's even permitted to make a 76th interchange - why doesn't the steward just say that the team has already made 75 and prevent players from coming off? Surely there are going to be situations where it's more valuable to give away a free kick and make an interchange than to keep a good player on the bench in a tight game, so it effectively means that a team can make an infinite number of interchanges so long as they're willing to eat the penalties. Dumb rule.
It’s incredibly harsh, but it’s never happened before
That was North's plan, had they still had interchanges left they probably would have put 19 on the field.Surely the penalty needs to be changed to a club fine.
Horrible way for North to lose the game.
That'd be another interchange though.Just call the player back.
Good. Two free kicks and two 50’s might teach them to count betterThat'd be another interchange though.
You may not like the rule and the circumstances were unfortunate for North, but it was the perfect application of the rule. How can the umpires and the AFL let that decide a game of football?
If a club has maxed their interchanges then surely the reserve umpire or interchange steward gets out of their chair and lets the players know by standing in front of their bench with their arms out or waves a red flag or something...
Free kick and 50m penalty for that? The infringement had zero impact on the game. Just call the player back.
What a farcical application of the rules. It really is pathetic.
This league is joke

“Go ahead”How did they approve the 76th???View attachment 1692100
The way I see it with no interchanges left the player can't technically leave the field so any other player that enters is a 19th player on the field.I've just read section 7 of the laws of the game to work out what should happen and the issue is this: it literally just says the interchange warden should notify the AFL, not what the response should be.

Honest question: is there any precedent for a free kick and 50 metre penalty being paid for this kind of infringement?
It just seems like the umpires decided they could make a penalty on the spot?
