Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

Clarkson amassed nine first-round picks in his first four years attending the draft, ultimately netting future stars in Jarryd Roughead, Lance Franklin, Jordan Lewis, Grant Birchall and Cyril Rioli.

The AFL’s priority pick system from which Hawthorn benefitted is now defunct, and a huge increase in the market value of first-round draft picks – largely a reaction to Hawthorn’s success – means Clarkson’s ploy to aggressively trade out accomplished players will never again prove so lucrative.

Added to Hodge, Mitchell (elite legends of the game) and Sewell

He should have won 5 premierships.. I know.. even after losing the big bud.

Shit coach.. should have sacked him after his 4th and banished him from the club. Underachiever.

Malthouse got a flag in his eleventh year so long tenures are not unheard of.
Malthouse came with credentials as a premiership coach. He knew what was needed and assembled the right team.
We landed in two GFs in 2002 and 2003 which no-one expected and then won in 2010.
Coaching is hard and if we are honest GFs are want we want and expect.
If you don't deliver it's time to move on. This happens in all football codes.
It's time for change.

Buckley and Malthouse have been treated differently. Malthouse's record at Collingwood is better than Buckley's, yet they still got rid of him.
If current performance was under MM, there would be no argument and Mick would be gone. Yet cause it's Buckley there is no certainty.

Is it because of age, Buckley is still young and still has time to improve or because there is some sort of bias towards Buckley?

Mick got the 11th year. Are you happy to give it to Bucks?

MM 57.1% win rate in H&A games at Collingwood, Bucks 55.28 (55.6% going into 2021) so hardly anything in it.

It probably is time for a change. Just pointing out ten years is not neccessarily "too long"

Malthouse landed us in two GF's in their first ten years, Buckley one. So its not is if neither of them had some success. As others have pointed out the h/a win loss ratios are comparable.

As for "credentials" , thats pretty irrelevant whats on your CV. Theres every chance the next coach wont be a ready made premiership coach either. Most premiership coaches are at their first clubs.. in fact the last one to win a flag at his second club was Malthouse in 2010. Then Matthews at the Lions. Prior to that it was Malcolm Blight (who didnt win a flag at his first club). Prior to that we go back to Alan Jeans.

I love these kids getting 1 game and dropped. Easy way to shatter confidence.

Need to give some a solid run at it.

Sometimes its neccessary as we have zero depth after the cleanout at the end of 2020. But its happening too much. Maybe we should have kept somebody like Wills or Broomhead/Shaz for a year whilst in transition.. just for the depth.

I honestly think he would go well with another group, even a Carlton. 2018 wasn’t a fluke and playing finals last year and winning one well not every coach does that
I’m hoping he will go well with us next year.

What else could he say? He's not going to come out and bag him, even if he was planning to sack him.
"He has the full support of the Board "
It’s clear that Wright rates Buckley as a coach. Maybe he’s a “fan boy” too?
