Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

You don't get it. Buckley doesn't talk to the press because he owes them something. He talks to them because he owes us something.
He is the caretaker of our football club.
Just as a politician should be held to account for the people he purports to represent, so too, our footy coaches owe their members and supporters clear explanations as to why things are going badly or well and what direction they plan on taking the club.

An interesting view.

He doesn't owe the supporters anything in relation to media appearances, in my opinion. It seems that most people in this thread would be happy if he didn't bother speaking to the media at all, and that might be one of the few things I agree with them on.

Footy media is little more than 'feeding the chooks'. Media drives the game as much as anything these days, and 'access' is a vital part of how the industry works. That's why we have cameras to capture some sly arse-grabbing between players.

But you know, Bucks does host online Q&A sessions with supporters, so maybe you can select one of your really really important queries and confront him with it next week?

So just a return to the good old "everything is Buckley's fault" days again.... righto.

If you didn’t see anything in the questions that should have been asked, and the relationship to our current dire situation on field, then you are simply a rusted on Buckley man.
Or a Buckley cultist.

Nothing gets past you Mikey. But Play nice and let the dumb kids get some credit for a change. Gimpy put a lot effort into his beautifully bungled investigation.

You're hilarious re.. you're a laugh and a half re.. stitches stitches.. take me to hospital.. take me to hospital.

He talks to the press because it’s part of CFC’s contract/commitment to the AFL.
Does anyone think he does post match pressers because he wants to? No he does it because the AFL’s contract with its broadcasters require him to.
You are absolutely correct that the questions you would have asked should have been asked. But the journos require a good relationship to be able to “scoop” their competition. Their job depends on it.
So don’t expect your excellent probing to ever be asked publically.

If Wright didn't just walk in they could have done a Boston Celtics, move Buckley to football manager and recruit a new senior coach.

I was taking beautiful pot shots at the many Essendope supporters in my circle. over the, you know, vitamin C intakes through injections and how they were like a cult fixated on their golden boy Hird who seemed to have cast a spell over them like some demi messiah, FMD, some on here ,thankfully in the minority display the exact same attributes, Bucks, just like Hird, is very persuasive in his messages to the supporter group through his pressers, Rule 101, control behaviour, hearts and minds automatically follow.

The decision on Buckley will be on the advice of GW either either if he is retained it will against the wish of the majority. The only way he is retained is if there is absolutely zero viable alternative going by his record and game style. Retaining him will cause more destabilizing not right the ship.
GW might give advice, either either way.
But that doesn’t mean it will be followed.

He made the statements so he can defend them.

LOL, he doesn't have to defend or respond to anything outside that which falls under his direct responsibility. Offering an opinion doesn't automatically make him responsible for every perceived sin of the club.

What a crock. He talks to the press predominantly at the direction of the AFL.

What do you want him to say? That the current board must go?

when was the last time you saw a Coach get grilled in the way the poster was suggesting.
It doesn’t happen - at most 2 awkward questions are about it - they need access to Clubs and Coach so they keep things cordial.

Nothing. I coach the team. Next question.
I didn't see much wrong with his reply and the loudest on here are those that want him gone and anything he says will be wrong.

He won't win any supporters over whatever he says. Molehill :arrowright: Mountain.

You are missing my point. He said our game plan is not a defensive one when in the next great breath he boasted about us being 3rd best defensive in the comp over the past 4 weeks.

He raved about the current board yet no one pointed to our disastrous on and off field performance over the past 2 years and asked who carries the blame.

Bucks needs to be forced to view footage of the countless clear cut occasions we stopped and went sideways when were in the corridor. and then be asked if this was a tactical direction or simply a refusal by the players to adopt Buckley's exciting game plan.

Either way , he either has a defensive game plan or he has lost the respect of his players who refuse to do what they are told to do.

The good thing about Bucks is he is more then comfortable to throw his players in the heat when it comes to blame

I don't see an issue with that. Defensively we have held up well, doesn't necessary mean that because we haven't kicked more than our opposition our game plan is defensively. Our forward line hasn't been settled since our first game.

Not sure I would call it 'raved'. He answers questions he is asked. If you have an issue with the media not asking the questions you want, how is that a 'Buckley' issue?

You seriously don't think each game is reviewed by him and assistants then sections shown to the players?

We are uber defensive. We have taken defence to the next level. We are so ultra defensive that we have sacrificed any chance of scoring a reasonable total. Any thoughts that we aren’t playing an entirely defensive, low risk game plan is literal folly.

That's what I find so incomprehensible. They sit and watch multiple moments in every game we play on a loop and yet nothing changes. DeGoey was the instigator of that shocking defensive kick to the wing which led to a Port goal. The following week he was charging forward , ball in hand and handballed to a stationary ruckman, destroying a promising chance to hit the scoreboard. If the videos are studied so meticulously why has there been no change in our mindset from week to week.

You can't score if you play stop/start footy and give the opposition time to flood the backline. So our defensive approach is as responsible for our inability to score as the malfunctioning forward line.

Nah, I don't think the decision on bucks will be GW alone, on the contrary, I think GW will say what the board wants him to say.

Yep I saw what you saw and just like you I found it frustrating but I still cannot accept it is coaching direction. I believe it is confidence and belief in team-mates. We have made at least 4 positional changes week in week out. Not sure how chemistry and belief in each other can be built in this manner especially since we have debuted so many players and our senior players are not playing to the expected standard.

This year is gone, however I will still go (after lockdown) and watch them live and on TV not wishing failure every week but to see what future we may have in debutantes.
