Is Buckley A Good Coach?

The senior coach is an important club figure and a legitimate topic of discussion. It's fair to do so and everyone has a right to express their view.

The mod team observed that the thread was dominated by a few protagonists and their points were repeated i.e. 8 years of regression vs marked improvement in 17,18 etc Pretty much everyone with a strong opinion has already expressed it here.

What further degraded discussion was the simplistic "sack FIGJAM" or "he's a legend" type posts.

This thread will remain open. If your view has slightly shifted or you have new thoughts please share. In an effort to encourage quality discussion repetitive statements and circular arguments will from now on be deleted as will silly posts suggesting that we sack a coach on match-day.

FYI Gone Critical Anzacday Maggie5

How many games have we been ahead at quarter time. ...and then...NUTTED IN THE COACHES' BOX?

What it shows is he can plan to match the opposition but is either inflexible of incapable of making in game moves ie not smart enough. Whatever it is, he is failing.

He would make a very good forward scout but in the hurly burly of game day he gets lost.

MM didn't tell him he'd have to make moves during a game. If only MM had stuck around.

Perhaps he should be on 1/4 of his salary if he's only ok until quarter time?

Apparently that was the 4th lowest MCG crowd since WW2. Not sure whether that is just us or all teams as it kind of does not make sense as we only ever played finals and away games at the G for most of that period.

Still can get Lower I reckon

The gws win against us at Metricon when they had their entire leadership group in the stands.. the gws pl win against us.. again they had a stack of good players out.. and their captain playing on 1 leg.. and then there was this yrs embarrassing loss to gws when they had half their side consisting of academy players.. but when Buckley coaches a winning side as an underdog.. then it's like he's the messiah again. They'd have signed him for another 3 yrs if we beat Melbourne.. notwithstanding the fact that there has been 100s of these underdog style wins over the course of the last 10 yrs.. not only coming from Buckley coached underdog sides.

What matters most is a level of consistency of good attractive football with your ultimate goal being not only to win a premiership.. but to win.. multiple premierships..

He hasn't even got one in him.

What do you think of the concept of moving on most or all of the assistants and leaving Bucks where he is? I've also previously thought and said here that Bucks should go, but I am unaware of a replacement that would give us an edge. Maybe Bucks just needs better people around him?
Nope he must go

Simple question. Who is doing a better job, Nicks at the Crows or Bucks at the Pies?

Look at where they both started.

Can you imagine if that was Buckley coaching.. wouldn't hear the end of it. It would form the basis of everything moving forward.. forget all about our shocking performances.

Multiple oremierships? That's all due to luck!

Todays loss was 100 percent on Buckley. They were stuck playing our football for 3 quarters then decided to attack, we twiddled our thumbs then they hit the front and it was too late. He finally made a couple of moves (de goey and Maynard to the mids) but as usual too late, and its ingrained in our players brains to hold the ball and kick it sideways,
We could have a forward line of peak Lockett, Cyril, Carey and Daicos and we would still look turgid.

I just read that this is our worst start to a season since 1999.

But everything is OK though.
This is our 4th worst start to a season since 1897.

We’re currently 2-8. There’s only been three other seasons where we’ve been worse after 10 games (1942, 1982, 1999). We were 1-9 in all those years.

1942 can be excused because of WWII. The other two years resulted in coaching changes (Hafey and Shaw were sacked).

we need to sack him this week, so we can start winning again. We're going to miss the finals because of buckley.

1. We’ve beaten one top 8 team since round 7 of 2020.
2. We are sitting 2/8…. Including one win against NORTH MELB which was still not an EASY win
3. We can’t score, this isn’t a new trend have had how many goalless quarters?

and we are still having this conversation?

Yeah let’s sign up to another 3 years of 50pt scores, trying not to lose games instead of trying to win.. what a formula for success that is! Anyone saying we haven’t been flogged this year. Yes we have. 5-6 goal losses when you can only score 5-6 goals a game are absolute FLOGGINGS.
