Is Gary Ablett Jr cooked?

Geelong fans are pretty set on the idea that AFL footy peaked from 2007-2009 and has been steadily weaker ever since

I've tried telling them that the Hawthorn premiership teams from 2013, 2014, 2015 would've beaten our 2008 premiership side by 7 or 8 goals, but they refuse to listen to reason.

They have their heads up their own arses.
Bollocks.

Push in the back on Brayshaw should've iced the game.

The umpires clearly shocked that Gaz laid a tackle and unwilling to upset the natives have called play on.

43 players out on their feet in the last quarter after a high intensity street fight. Little Gaz been running one way and not particularly well for 3/4's decides a nice open last quarter is his moment to rack up some easy ones.

Tim Kelly, now that's a last quarter. Danger's intensity around the ball. Duncan's class.

Ablett padding his stats has fooled the media, hardly a surprise.

Can you double like a post?

Was great in the last quarter and upped his defensive intensity, too, which is one genuine knock on him with the shoulder issues. He's not what he once was, but he still has most of the competition covered pretty comfortably.
Maybe plays on one more year?

I dont get people suggesting he's become a Seagull at all. What I see is a champion player getting older and choosing his battles more carefully. He was brilliant in the last QTR last night when he needed to be.

Interesting he does seem to get caught with the ball a bit more often these days though. Not sure if that's him losing a bit of the incredible strength he had, rose coloured glasses, or the standard of players generally has lifted over the years.

There wasn't many easy touches for anyone in that last quarter. Even the short handballs were to open up the run. No seagulling.

He is still so clean and strong in the contest and our best decision maker.

People are so quick to write him off almost expecting him to be at the levels he was at his peak, it's embarrassing really.. The bloke is nearly the oldest player in the league at 34 and has had a better year than probably at least 1/2 - 2/3s of the comp.

He's not going to dominate like he once did.. And that doesn't at all cheapen what has is and has been in the past.

Compare his year to a player of a similar age in Burgoyne who is routinely admired by the media and general footy public, yet his year to date is completely inferior to Ablett's in all aspects. He's simply a victim of his own standards, yet in saying that he's still performing at an incredibly high level.

Relative to Burgoyne he is averaging more than 10 disposals, more goals, more tackles, more clearances, more inside 50s, more goal assists, more marks, more rebound 50s, etc. Not criticising Burgoyne at all, but many seem to think barring injury he still has plenty of good footy to come, yet if Ablett fails to rack up 30+ while kicking 3+ goals, he's finished.

I love this rationale. Sorry to encourage the derail.

Geelong's 2013 team beat Hawthorn's 2013 team twice. Geelong's 2007 team would beat Geelong's 2013 team by 10 goals.

Therefore 2007 >>> 2013, right?

He has lost his speed.

Still bemused by Mick Malthouse’s article in last weeks Hun Sun describing Geelong’s recruitment of Ablett as a “nightmare” for Chris Scott. Fevola to Brisbane and Malthouse to Carlton as coach were nightmares

Or a broken down Daisy Thomas to Carlton, which happened under Malthouse's watch at the Blues.

He's been absolute garbage for two years now. Just a glorified stat padder. As a passionate Essendon fan I hope he plays on next year so we can run rings around him like we did earlier in the year!!
