Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

I posed the exact same question to the BF public on the eve of GWS's preliminary final victory over the Pies last year (click here to see that thread) and the notion was quickly shot down as rubbish with the thread getting locked pretty quickly

So, let's try this again. Is GWS's premiership window on the verge of closing?
Clearly never heard of the Einstein definition of insanity, has this guy....

Have you not seen Tom Green, Hopper, Caldwell, Whitfield, Williams, Taylor, Haynes, Finlayson, Hately, Daniels, Taranto, Perryman, Bobby Hill and Lachie Ash?
Their youth to go with their mature players is still very much one of best in the league. They will stay in contention for quite some time this decade.
Foolish of you to make same mistake, twice!

Your Gold Coast not having a go at Tom Green at pick 2 instead of Noah Anderson is looking shaky on my first sight of Tom Green play.

Anderson was picked in part to retain Rowell.

Smart move.

Will be interesting to see which of their uncontracted players jump ship, keeping them on unders was easier to do when they are on top

Cameron, Williams, Finlayson, perryman, Corr, hateley and Caldwell all out of contract

You can have another wing/flanker in Williams.
We'll take Caldwell, thanks...

There is nothing smart of not having a go at getting Tom Green.
Looks like he will be an absolute gun mid.
Seen nothing from Anderson in bits I seen to suggest he should be pick number 2 of this draft crop.
I'm glad they didn't. But he slid all the way to 10!

I reckon once they know they aren't going there they lean to the guy who they can get.
Sun's probably a bit different in that we may have passed at 2

Suggest you watch the whole game vs West Coast.

But you've clearly made up your mind so I won't waste my time.

Rowell and Anderson were slam dunk selections for #1 and #2. Literally every other club in the AFL would have chosen them in that order on draft night last year. I would have thought the question was more pertinent to Melbourne supporters after their club drafted a ruckman with pick 3 when they already had Max Gawn (one of the league's best ruckmen in his physical prime at 27 years of age) and a serviceable backup in Braydon Preuss who was starting to enter his prime at 24.

We actually needed midfielders and there were extra benefits associated with keeping the best friends together. Melbourne really didn't need to use a high-end pick on another ruckman for their list but decided to go with Jackson anyway. Also, you don't need to tell me Tom Green is a gun. I went into the reserves thread on your board more than a year ago and wrote this after watching him play against my club's reserves:

Not my board. Not a GWS member but MY team actually did call his name out on draft night but GWS matched as they should have.
Amazing no other club did before that.
He went at pick 10... Crazy!!!

My mistake.

I was also shocked Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle chose not to bid on him. I can understand Sydney not bidding on him because you don't want to start a bidding war with your neighbours. I was extremely impressed with the way he played when I saw him a few times in the NEAFL last year and genuinely thought he was a lock to be bid on with a top 5 pick. I know he was born in Townsville and I would have loved for him to have stayed there because he would have been in the Suns academy but obviously there's the possibility that he may not have even played Aussie rules if he stayed in north QLD so I'm happy as a footy fan that he wasn't lost to another code. It's also great to have a player to represent Canberra footy in the same way Isaac Heeney represents the Newcastle/Hunter region. It's been a while since a gun player has come out of Canberra. I think James Hird was probably the last in the early 90s.

They are stacked with talent.

At least another 3 or 4 years in premiership contention with the age profile of their current guns
Part of that also depends on how their young guns develop (the under 21's from the pointy end of the National Draft)
Not a bad spot to be in, if you ask me. Plenty of clubs would happily trade their list for the Giants' list.

They will need to find another ruckman. They've got a pair of young 200cm tall projects from country NSW, but they'll be looking to replace Mummy after this season (and Jacobs in the next couple of years)

age
34 Heath Shaw
34 Shane Mumford
32 Sam Jacobs
30 Sam Reid
30 Matthew de Boer
30 Callan Ward
29 Phil Davis
28 Daniel Lloyd
28 Nick Haynes
27 Jeremy Cameron
26 Toby Greene
26 Stephen Coniglio
26 Aidan Corr
26 Lachie Whitfield
25 Zac Williams
25 Josh Kelly
24 Zac Langdon
24 Jeremy Finlayson
24 Harry Himmelberg
23 Jacob Hopper
22 Tim Taranto
21 Isaac Cumming
21 Harry Perryman
21 Brent Daniels
21 Sam Taylor
20 Bobby Hill
20 Xavier O'Halloran
19 Jye Caldwell
19 Jackson Hately
19 Tom Green
19 Lachlan Ash

The Giants could very well find themselves with a record of 1-3 after 4 rounds
After Round 7, 2010, Hawthorn was 1-6 and in 14th position (of 16). They were seconds away from losing to 16th-placed Richmond when Sam Mitchell produced a game-saving tackle. Kennett might've sacked Clarkson had they lost. (They'd fallen from 2008 premiers to 9th position in 2009)

The Hawks rebounded from that low ebb to produce an 11-1-3 record over the last 15 games and made the 2010 finals
They were in premiership contention for the next 6 years after that!

2010 - 7th
2011 - 3rd
2012 - 2nd
2013 - 1st
2014 - 1st
2015 - 1st
2016 - 5th

Age of players during that 2010 losing streak:

28 - Guerra, Bateman
27 - Burgoyne, Mitchell, Osborne
26 - Sewell, Gibson, Brown, Ladson
25 - Hodge, Gilham
24 - Lewis, Young
23 - Franklin, Roughead, Bailey
22 - Birchall, Stratton, Suckling
21 - Rioli
19 - Shiels, Schoenmakers
Joined Hawthorn after 2010: Hale, Gunston, Breust, Puopolo, Hill, Lake, McEvoy and Frawley

Not saying GWS will threepeat, but it's a similar age profile to those Hawks and the same impatient mutterings from certain sectors about a so-called "team of destiny". The Giants have lost a number of good players over the past few years, but they've managed to trade them for good picks and maintained their high quota of blue chip talent. People overlook that, I think.

The Giants will be threatening for the next 5-8 years, their playing list is strong and there is still upside improvement to come from some of their younger players.

Will they actually win a flag ??

That's anyone's guess, there are so many factors you have to get right to take out a premiership but it may be take a change of coach to deliver the ultimate prize.

Flags are hard to win. A lot has to go right, you need a bit of luck.
But we'll be there or there abouts for the foreseeable future, whether we win one is definitely questionable. Lots of very good sides have never won one. St Kilda is a good example.

Players under 25 or under in our top team:

Williams

Why would we want another inside bull when we picked up the best one in Rowell? We have plenty of inside mids already. We also needed more outside run and speed. Anderson was a no-brainer and his scope for improvement is huge.
In answer to the OP , the Giants are still well within their window. Easily the most talented list with good depth. Not convinced their coach is the right man though. Would love to see them win a flag though and Leon prove the doubters wrong.
