Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

So you’re saying they can’t win a flag in the next few years because they might not be that good in this strange year?

That doesn’t make any sense. Premiership windows are multiple seasons and they’ve got plenty of players in their primes plus some young guns who will no doubt improve in the next year or two. The Giants aren’t some old banged up team.

They have class all over the field. Window is open for another 3-4 years.
But they should have one at least one flag already.
There hard to win.
2016 was probably a year early (we were good enough) but we started the year with most thinking we were a fringe finals team.
We haven't got there with a fit list since.

You need to get some see you next tuesday into your team. Skills arent everything - obviously
Mumford's always been important for them in that, and Greene is vital and De Boer important too.

But the young Giants had attitude and a game plan that involved them putting that attitude on show and playing to their skills. It wasn't perfect but geez they went close in 2016, one bounce of the ball and they beat the Dogs and I reckon beat the Swans silly in the grand final.

They haven't reached those same heights since and right now don't seem to have any swagger or aggression in taking the game on.

Drinking their own bath water IMO

I’d concentrate on your own back yard
He’s got the right for an opinion. And his point is valid. You’ve got the most talented list in the AFL by the length of Flemington and you continue to disappoint. Comparing Adelaide to GWS is a ridiculous argument when you take into account the amount of talent on each list. The fact your footy club still hasn’t won a premiership with the amount of talent you’ve been gifted is absolutely farcical.

Depends who you talk to.

We have been told we have a list that’s not deep at all by supposed experts
We have been told that our list was the 4th strongest for multiple years.

It seem the “best list in the league” only gets brought out when shots need to be taken.

Only time we went into a finals with an unfair advantage was 2016 with a larger list, but then the umps evened that up.

If we are farcical what does that make the Suns?
Carlton of more top 20 picks than we do don’t they?

As I’ve said elsewhere I’m all for the Leon out and have been vocal about it. But he wasn’t missing easy targets Saturday and giving away bullshit frees and 50s.

I thought Deledio made some smart comments about GWS.

They win plenty of ball, but with minimal inside 50s. They look for the perfect play. Which often costs them because there isn't always going to be one especially with zones and floods.

our draft concessions ended 7 years ago. We started with no players, you have to provide concessions to build a team. And we still have to stay under the Salary cap. Our early picks since have mostly been due to trading out players. We have had to let go of so many players due to cap restrictions.
Premierships are hard to win. The last 3 years we have had a squad capable of winning, but got to the finals with a lot of injuries. In last years finals series we had all of these guys out
Ward
Cognilo
Patton
Delidio.
Plus a few depth players

We also had Greene and Whitfield miss in the final series and Davies got injured in game. It doesnt matter how good your list is, that sort of injury list is going to kill you.

The team that won the prelim had 6 of our best 10 players out. No wonder we had nothing in the tank and got pumped by a very good team on GF day. reverse the situation, and take 6 of Richmonds best, plus a few depth players, it is a different result. (not at all suggesting they were not deserving. just saying alot has to go right to win a comp)

we has similar issues in 17 & 18 as well.

Cop out for me.

The coaching is Z grade you can’t tell me Clarkson wouldn’t have won at a minimum 2 flags.

Then we dig deeper and look T those injured players- why recruit injury prone players like Deledio for instance? And you wonder why he breaks down?

Yes you’ve had injuries but you haven’t helped yourself. Cameron should have been sacked 3 years ago

I posed the exact same question to the BF public on the eve of GWS's preliminary final victory over the Pies last year (click here to see that thread) and the notion was quickly shot down as rubbish with the thread getting locked pretty quickly. Now it's time to revisit the question. Two pretty questionable losses to North and the Dogs in the last two rounds has led to the Giants currently sitting 12th on the ladder with a record of 1-2 and a very difficult fixture against the in form Magpies coming this Friday night. The Giants could very well find themselves with a record of 1-3 after 4 rounds and possibly fall into the 14-16 range on the ladder if results don't go their way. Following the Collingwood game, the Giants face Hawthorn at home and Port Adelaide away. There are also growing rumours about significant GWS players like Jeremy Cameron potentially exploring their free agency options at the end of this year.

So, let's try this again. Is GWS's premiership window on the verge of closing?

No.

Why would it be?

They have a host of young high level talent coming through and will likely continue to get high picks as established players get traded out.

Tell me more about this theory.

From the list of unavailable players in the 2019 finals series, which players had question marks on their reliability before coming to the Giants?

Deledio is a massive one especially the price they paid

Was he though? He was super durable his entire career for Richmond except for 2016.

Is the the one and only example on your deeper digging?

He was injured when he arrived at GWS..and with a history of soft tissue injuries...and you wonder why he breaks down...could they have used that pick to get a good ruckman for instance? Didn't make a lot of sense at the time...

Mind you passing on Grandy about 10 times was worse than this!

Hmmm...not sure there were many questioning his recruitment at the time.

He was all Australian in 2015 and his only real injury interrupted season was 2016.

Dont recall any saying his recruitment didn’t make sense when GWS has just made a prelim and were building. But we do have the benefit of hindsight on this one, which no one except yourself seemed to have foreseen.

Any other concerns on recruitment of injured players? Could they have foreseen Coniglios knee injury? Was it a mistake recruiting Davis, with his foot injury leading up to the GF? Did they thoroughly analyse the risk of Whitfield and his pesky appendix before taking him pick one? Wards knee? Greene’s temperament?

They have the quality, it's not clicking for them at the moment and I dare say that's largely due to their ruck stocks. Get most of their best team on the paddock and a decent ruckman and they are contenders. Sauce is cooked and Mumford's just hanging on.

A fit Kreuzer would be amazing for us. Don't think it would happen.

Well you could have drafted Grundy you know rather than taking about 10 picks and still not taking him...a howler of epic proportions there
