Is Melboune City/Victory already greater than any AFL Rivarly?

Rivalries are based on 3 factors.

1. Geographic
2. Class, religion, socio economic background.
3. Success.

In an AFL context, Melbourne v Collingwood was massive in the 50's and 60's because it was based on class warfare, the MCC silvertails v the working class and both sides played in numerous Grand Finals and premierships in that period.

A lot of that has been eroded in the AFL now with equalisation as most clubs are nothing more than soulless franchises. They represent marketing objectives rather than geographic regions, just look at the Giants for that.

The only rivarly of note currently is Hawthorn and Geelong and that rival really is tame compared to historical rivals.

Spend the week leading up to a Showdown/Derby in Adelaide/Perth - the hype is what a Carlton/Collingwood VFL clash had in the 70s & 80s. The rivalries go back to pre national comp days.

The Melbourne Victory/Melbourne City rivalry is a non-event. It only looks good on TV because Melbourne Victory are the best supported team in the comp. And since Victory are the reigning champs and City currently have a good team it makes for one of the better games.

As far as rivalries go it's like Collingwood vs one of those teams that wants to play Collingwood. A North home game might get 25k but against Collingwood that bumps up to 40-50k because the crowd would be 50/50. Collingwood vs North wouldn't draw a lot more but it would be 90% Collingwood supporters in the crowd.

The best derby in the A-League is Sydney FC vs WSW. There's a geographical difference between the two teams and there's a cultural East vs West thing going on in Sydney. There's no difference between Victory and City, they even play in the same stadium.

Doubt that. The game back then was full of characters and they had some epic finals battles.

Was it even a full house?

Nope. Choc full it's about right on 30k, there were 23k there last night.

The City home derby in always poorly attended because Victory members don't get entry right and have to pay for an away ticket ($40+ generally).

By way of comparison, the Victory home game earlier this season drew over 40k.

Yes the rivalry is better. It's part of world football/soccer culture. And at the moment Australia is theirs for the taking. AFL is far too larrikin and casual to really build up that kind of passion. And that's probably a good thing.

Great rivalry as in the South East Melbourne Magic / Nunawading 'Hang Ten' Spectres v Melbourne Tigers.

How's that one going 20 years down the track? Perhaps in another 20 years, the City / Victory rivalry will rival the basketball one.
Don't you mean the St Kilda Pumas/South East Melbourne Magic / Nunawading 'Hang Ten' Spectres v Melbourne Tigers.

in all seriousness how poor is the standard of play, especially the striking... i can see why people prefer premier league

It's improving and the strikers had split seconds in that game to shoot as it was a very quick frenetic game.
I like the EPL as well but lately it's been a bit of a snoozefest.

Here's some nice goals in recent weeks from Melbourne City.

Victory has what, 26k members, which is by far the largest in the league?

City has...8k?

Long way to go to rival the major AFL rivalries.

But no issue with another sport having good games. Who cares? People enjoy it, and it gives people something to do during the off season in addition to cricket.

To those who say it's only soccer, the Victory will play Juve at the MCG mid year and will sell out the ground. You may be blind now, but don't say you weren't warned.

I thin k the ICC matches last year proved that people are going to these games and selling out the MCG without Victory playing. You could bring any big European club over and have them play against the Camberwell under 15 disabled midget hermaphrodites and youd still get 90,000 at the MCG.

So we are to ignore that it wasn't a sell out, many people weren't aware of it, but because some dickheads carried on, it the greatest thing?

I believer they had fights at a darts game too. maybe that's the biggest thing.
