Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

Structure is probably the biggest issue with Norths recent drafting.

Not prioritising a tall forward in the last few years will mean they have to pay through the nose via trade to get one.

We have 2 first rounders in this years draft with plenty of talls available to pick. We also have a player currently winning the Colemen.

Larkey like most decent key forwards had a slow start and had to take time to develop.

Last season was larkeys breakthrough season

Larkey has averaged 40 goals a year over the past 3 seasons. He looks like exceeding that this year. He has been around for a while now, but no one has bothered to notice. It has also been in a terrible side over that period.

I get that Nut.
Hopefully the talls you pick in this years draft (if you pick them) will turn out the way you want them to. Talls normally take 7 years to show their true talent so hopefully from 2030 you guys are all systems go.

Just intrigued by the fact your supporters genuinely believe what they post and it's no trolling or attention seeking. Strange and depressing supporter base.
I wasn’t commenting on what my supporter group posts. But it seems from this reply here, that’s the purpose of many of your posts. In a thread about Logan McDonald, of all people.

Which was what I suspected anyway.

I think 7 years is a stretch. There are plenty of talls these days who have a relatively instant impact and there are plenty of mids who take 3-4 years before they hit their straps. Naughton, King brothers, Cameron, Daniher, Hogan all performed well from their first year. I see no reason why we couldn’t pick a tall in this years draft who could develop under Larkey immediately.

We clearly rated Phillips higher than McDonald and the outcome is yet to be determined. Whether the decision is right or wrong going forward, I am glad we didn’t reach to fill a hole. I don’t think any club should reach to fill a need that high in the draft.

I don't think anyone is arguing Logan will be as good as Buddy in his prime. We are hoping for a Nick Reiwoldt or something of that level.
The person who wrote the thread title appears to be.

Larkey is a Tom Lynch clone in every sense would excel in a top 8 side with routine delivery.

Wot.

He kicked less goals in 2022 than he did in 2021.

He won the Frosty Miller VFL goal kicking in 2018 and has been consistently excellent for a young KPP since entering league.

He's kicked 7 x 5+ bags in his 70 games to date including 2 x bags of 7+, the most notable one being taking Weitering to the cleaners one night in 2021...

Hasn't been a slow burn at all given the bulk of the below has been in a bottom 4 side.

70 games at almost 2 goals a game for a KPF entering his prime is excellent goin, it's quite possible he kicks 500-600 career goals injury permitting if he plays another 150-170 games, which is Roughead, Gehrig, Jonathan Brown, Tredrea territory in terms of the all-time goal kicking list.

The real phallacy is how quickly mids kick on. It just appears that way as they can often contribute on the flanks earlier than that. But show me a Premiership team and I'll show you a group of hardened 24+ year old mids.

Agree. If McKay leaves they are in all sorts.
And up forward Comben is far from a lock.
They are very thin beyond their best 22 with key position players.
We're already winning without McKay because he's been injured for the first two rounds, so not sure if I agree there. Kallan Dawson is adequate depth as a key defender but looks to be injured. Up forward, yeah sure. There's Jacob Edwards who's not ready, and CCJ is injured. Ford probably isn't tall enough to play as a true KPF. I think we'll probably target a state league tall in the MSD just for coverage.

Comben's not a lock but he's been playing pretty well. Getting to the right positions, hitting every contest hard and creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Also did a lot of good work in the ruck after Xerri went down (in tandem with Hugh Greenwood), and had 11 scoring involvements for the day. The next step is to translate the contested marking ability from his junior footy, and he'll be a very potent CHF.

11 score involvements for a kpf is huge.

What’s the go with Phillips thus far?

Is he a year behind in development because of the glandular fever(?) last year or is he just not coming on yet?

Is he another Dow?

He’s basically completely missed 2 out of the last 3 years of football. His running output is about 70% of where it will get to. Whilst he ran a 2:91 20 meter sprint time he can’t really show it yet because he’s gassed. Same as LDU early on.

Not all players come on, it’s true. Dow looked promising early and hasn’t really improved since. One thingy hats held him back is his disposal and composure. Neither of which are a problem for Will.

He played as the sun round 1 and got a career high 17 disposals in 53% game time. He did make some blues late as he fatigued that took away from the great play earlier in the game.

His kicking inside 50 is elite, as he draws the forward to the footy unlike most players that try and drill the footy.

He and Wardlaw will take over from cunners and Greenwood post 2024.

Dows issue was/is his two way running and getting lost in general play.

Good clearance player but disappears after that.

Has been racking it up in the VFL but Voss doesn’t rate him.

Two way running is an issue for Phillips too due to lack of fitness. He’s also best at clearance thus far and doesn’t get much footy on the outside. He also probably handballs more than I’d like given his kicking skills but I think again he’s not yet getting clear through speed/power.

If he begins to “rack it up” he’ll be an A grade midfielder

No concerns.

He’s probably the most damaging midfielder by foot on our list.

Probably still only 70% match fit at the moment.

Will come in for Simpkin this week. He played well against West Coast in Rnd 1.

Wardlaw will be the defensive force down the track in our midfield.

There's not to many young mids I can remember that hunt the man around the contest like he does.

He played his first game in 9 months on the weekend in the VFL.

Club have had him on a strengthening program to try and prevent any ongoing hamstring issues (he had 3 hamstring strains last year and only played 2 games in the NAB League, missed the national champs etc)

He needs to build up his match fitness.

I see a likely debut against Gold Coast in around round 5.

Lazy 5 is correct who ever said that. I’m still not losing sleep on not selecting Logan. I don’t think he is a no.1 key forward type. Amartey looked much better.
We'd be better off with Amartey than McDonald imo.
