I get the impression Laids and Stibbard were very keen on Chad Jones at 24, keen enough not to offer it for Guerra. Dunno, but from what I have heard, it wasn't a lack of interest from either parties that hurt the move.

There was an article on Guerra in today's Age.

It said that about half an hour before the trade deadline, Port rang North and then Geelong to see if a trade could be done. It seems that both North and Geelong were still scrambling for the Rawlings deal. So Port got in touch with St.Kilda and the Saints offerred their 3rd round pick as an ambit offer....much to the Saints surprise, Port accepted it.

I would think that the Roos rated Guerra as a 2nd round player, and so, didn't bother to offer a 3rd round pick to Port in the belief that it would be turned down. The Saints got cheeky, and they got rewarded.

Oh well...win some, lose some.

Further, many on this thread have written off Aaron Davey.

I don't think thats the case, I know in my case it will take more than 9 games to convince me that any player is going to be a gun.

The AFL world is full of players that burst on the scene and disappear just as quickly. Small forwards take up a fair proportion of those players, and plenty of names have already been mentioned on these boards as players that haven't lived up to the initial hype.

I think it is also worth noting that no side including Melbourne thought Davey was worth drafting in the main draft. Only time can possibly tell whether the doubts all clubs had about his game were reasonable.

As far as Guerra goes I don't think anyone in their wildest dreams would think that he would be having a season like this. He would have got more of a go at Port if that was the case.

Everyone thought that he was no more than handy and would be serviceable at filling a pocket or flank.

This board wasn't exactly full of condemnation of the Club for not getting him at the time, only the odd gripe here and there. I find it a bit rich by some posters to want to to kick heads after the event.

In any event what is letting us down is lack if KP's and tallish runners of which Guerra and Davey aren't.

Don't get me wrong, in hindsight I would love both at the club.

We cant start whining about Brain Wilson and Libba - we gave away two brownlow medalist!

What do people want - pulling rabbits out of the hat every trade period ?

We pulled Carey and Longmire out of under the Swans noses - I am sure the moaned about that to for years.

i watched davey play a few games for port melb last year and i seriously thought this guy would certainly have to be a top 10 draft pick , i think our club made a huge mistake this kid can only get better he is certain to win the rising star trophy . i was surprised when we didnt draft him , im no expert on talent but you would have to wonder what laidley was thinking about when he over looked this kid ,he would be a certain starter in our team . to think we have players that we drafted ahead of davey playing reserves football in the v.f.l makes me wanna puke.
