I would suggest he is not. His lack of knowledge is starting to become a lead weight around his neck. He's now just a sad sack who has been going through a mid life crisis for the last 20 years and now resembles a permanantly startled siamese cat. He needs to seriously consider giving the real stuff away. His bufoonery is a perfect fit for the Footy show but please spare us Sam on match days, this tired old man is no longer relevant.

He's definately gone off the boil of late. Basically acts like he doesn't give a ********. The way he was acting sarcastic about the interstate teams last week on the footy show was disgraceful, he needs to pull his ********en head in... Having said that, i think the whole "footy show" concept is coming to an end anyway. Trevor is past it, Eddie is beginning to ******** everyone cept Collingwood fans, and Sam has gone off the boil. And the ratings stink. Whats left?

I have to agree with you here. Sam Newman doesn't say anything good about the game anymore. Ive listened to his commentary and all he does is criticise.

Your lack of knowledge > Sam's.

Although he was very bad in that bit with clarkson he is actually one of the smartest out there when it comes to tactics especially rucking tactics. From a guy who has played 300 games I would listen to his opinion more than many coaches going around.

Lost it.

Just like how Bobby Davis and Lou Richards lost it somewhere along the line. Will be funny to watch to see how long he lasts before he gets the arse.

He's full of shi+.

Can't agree milnedog. By all accounts, he is a reasonably smart man in day-to-day life, but I reckon he has no idea how modern footy is played. Not just because it was a Hawthorn issue, but just in general. He knows 1 thing, kick it long, that was fine in the 70's, even the 80's, but footy has evolved for better or for worse. His rucking knowledge is pretty good, I'll give you that, but that's where it ends for him. Ruckwork has been fairly constant over the years, but the modern game has left him behind.

Thought he was pretty ordinary with Clarko tonight. Clarko did well to keep his cool I thought. The touch at the end with the scarf was just cheap, very un-necessary and embarrassing for all concerned. You could do that many times over with every single coach at any given time, but that is beneath most professionals.

He is less annoying than most old people, I'll give him that.

However, OneEyedHawk's opinion that he has no knowledge of the modern game is one that I support.

Hawthorns style of play is not one which is overly exciting to watch, however as Clarkson said, they have been building the club up from the preaseason. I thought he made a very valid point about Williams popping up as a target, and to go long and quick would not compliment his game.

While he did miss the point about the timing of forwards leading and not wanting to conceed possession by bombing long under pressure, I think the exercise tonight between Newman and Clarkson was basically just to show that there are reasons behind that style of gameplan and to re-enforce that this is going to happen while the kids learn how to play the game.

To come in and expect to be a big strong presence at CHF is very hard for an 18 year old kid. Knowing when to lead and how to lead takes a year or two at the minimum. Natural talent will carry guys until then.

Sam "Awkward Laughs" Newman.

Good call.

I still can't get past what a twonk he made of himself during the NYE coverage when he wore "2000" contact lenses.. the only purpose that served was say to the rest of Australia that he didn't want anyone checking out his pupils after being up all night.. He needs to relax fella.. take a load off.

It's almost been a perfect barometer for his over all relevance: Street Talk.

Maybe he's just getting lazy and going the easy way out and just interviewing morons, or maybe I'm getting old and bitter, but Street Talk is utter shi+e now. I used to find it entertaining, a good hit rate for watching something really funny or him having an interesting chat with a punter.

If Sam could get his point across properly, he would have far more respect than what he gets here.

His point was spot on tonight, yet he can't get it across in the correct manner. Hawthorn play a garbage brand of football that is horrible to watch (although Clarkson said it was exciting tonight, go figure). Sam saying kick it long to the target, and fair enough. Clarkson says they are kids and still learning. Fair enough - but why play them and not have them lead up the ground and present, so they can learn? Why not drill the boys to kick the pill to them, with some crumbers at their feet? It's the only way they will learn.

Granted, Sam can be a dill, but his point was spot on tonight. He just can't get it out properly.

Basically, it was Sam saying "bomb it long" and Clarkson saying his players don't want to back the younger guys in. The fact of the matter is, if they want to win games they'll need to do that, and thats what the top sides do. However Clarkson is probably under no illusions. If he plays like that, Hawthorn would be liable to lose by 10 goals every week.

A good example i guess is Ash Hanson from WCE. Hes pretty much in the same position as the Hawks forward (having played about 15 games or so), cept the Eagles can afford to bomb it long, because they have such a dominent midfield it doesn't matter so much. Hawthorn doesn't (regardless of how many possessions they rack up). Sam just doesn't appreciate Clarkson has a job to do, and his club getting embarssed by 10 goals every week isn't one of his goals, if it was, he'd be the coach of Carlton, who does seem to be listening to Sam.

I don't think Sam could ever be considered to be an intelligent person.

Ho come across all knowlegable but it is just a cover for his shallow view on most things.

He does make me laugh though, mainly at him, not with him.

He was terrible on the segment with clarkson last night. For a long time I felt him to be irrelevant. His role is to stir things up and say attention grapping things......he is not a footy expert....he struggles to get his message across when he has one. Last night with Clarkson is a great axample.....

He doesn't suffer people, thinks he has to tolerate most.....he is a mean old dude with plenty of money....

Eventually he will end up by himself with nothing.......no friends, no partner, no nothing.......

Are you kidding? Of course he's still relevant. We need people like him in footy. Imagine a footy world filled with personalities like Nathan "personality and charisma of a boiled potato" Buckley, it'd be pretty boring.
