I'd bet my last dollar that the only thing that made those ambulances resemble one was the paint on the outside. 100% IDF would have identified them as being used by militants. It's usually the same story when Hamas claim IDF has bombed a medical clinic or some other cultural site - it follows the same old pattern: Hamas hide militants and/or weapons there behind civilians; IDF tells them they are striking it and to get out; Hamas tells the civilians the IDF are lying or forces them to stay; IDF does exactly what they warned they would do; Hamas cries foul.

I'm not naive - sometimes IDF get it wrong. But that's the exception and the above is the rule.

What makes you think Israel is interested in ending settlements or giving occupied territory back?

The settlements were going on, as well as barriers, restrictions of movement etc while Fatah were in power overall, prior to Hamas rule in Gaza and influence elsewhere. That's one of the reasons why Hamas was able to take over, because the relatively (a key word) democratic and peaceful (at least in recent decades) Fatah were not making any headway. People got fed up and turned to a group promising more direct action. It wasn't a good choice for anyone, but saying a more peaceful option might lead to Israel being more reasonable about land/settlements isn't based on history.

Maybe it's possible with a better, more diplomatic Israeli government, but good luck getting much change to happen any time soon. Netanyahu has survived election defeats, corruption charges so far, and I doubt he'll step down because of intelligence and defence failings.
