It’s time to abolish restricted free agency compensation

There are no rules around free agency compensation. The AFL simply apply whatever they like to each situation.

No matter what McKay is offered, North will get a top 3 pick because it’s the AFL’s way of giving them a priority pick by stealth. Just as they did when James Frawley left Melbourne.

There’s no rules in place to stop it - they just do whatever they like.

Frawley was an AA, a top 3 player at Melbourne and the Hawks gave him a massive contract. The AFL also screwed Melbourne by ruling him as an unrestricted FA so we weren't able to match a bid player even though he was in the top 3 highest players at the club, the AFL did this because his contract was front loaded and low in his final year.

What has McKay done? He's a plodder, never been an AA and never been in the top 3 of their BnF

McKay is nothing like the Frawley situation.

LOL, Essendon are goign to give $800k to a plodder who struggles to play a full season?

Get your hand off it, if you receive pick 3 it's because of charity from the AFL, nothing else
$800k comes from this article, which, frankly, reads like it was written by Brad Scott and Adrian Dodoro.

"Essendon has one of the biggest war chests in the game, building a bank of about $2 million in salary cap savings to make a strategic strike on a defensive anchor."

"It could cost Essendon something in the vicinity of $700,000 – $800,000 to land McKay"

"So you missed the bit where it clearly states "It could cost...

FFS, bigfooty at it's best

Just saying it's not being pulled out of nowhere.

You seem to be having a massive sook over this and it's been quite entertaining, tbh.

Why you'd be worried about anything to do with little old North Melbourne when you're a chance at seeing two flags in three years is beyond me, though.

Wow, touchy, obviously hit a nerve.

I find it hilarious that North fans reads "it could be" and instantly take that as absolute proof it's going to happen 🤣

Are you really that thick?

Your club got busted tanking and took 60 years and 5 rebuilds to win a flag

Well duh I meant if Melbourne matched and forced a trade

thats another rubbish mechanism AFL put in, the idea of restricted FA and matching offers came from the NBA. When the original team match a contract offer for the player. Both the team and player have to honor it so that means the player stays at the orignal club. None of this, match then we trade rubbish.

Yeah, I have never been a fan of it either. In an ideal world, it should be a totally free market. Clubs who are in no way involved, should not be continually pushed down the draft order because of compensation picks.

I guess the AFL were/afraid that without it, some of the smaller clubs would lose too many players and become decimated.

End of First Round for Doedee... clubs will almost be pushing players out the door if they keep getting first round draft picks for role players

This system is so completely ****ed.

It's so ****ed that clubs are now exploiting its ****edness and structuring contracts to trigger higher band compensation to ensure clubs don't match offers.

Andrew Dillion has been in charge of integrity for years and nothing's changed. I bet the campaigner can't even spell the word.

Make the signing club pay most of the compo.
An 8year player costs you your future 2nd, 3rd.
The AFL can pay any extra. The extra starts at pick 25, nothing more

What stops someone offering 700K x 3 (2.1M total), triggering band 1 compo, then after a year changing the rest to 350K x 4 (Also 2.1M total)
