Free Agency Compensation must be abolished

I love how it's Battle and S Kilda that's drawing the ire

GWS just got pick 16 and 21 and it's barely mentioned
Bassat was spot on
We genuinely couldn’t care about the saints.

It’s more about the fact that would saints be more interested in re-signing him if the best pick in the draft they could get was #19 FA compo
Or Ben mackay last year
It ain’t about the saints or whoever. If you have a free agent who is fielding offers and you suck, best option is to try and get a gift pick after your first.

Tying finishing positions on the ladder to a clubs FA compensation is insane for all clubs. NFL doesn’t do it, no other league would

You give incentive for the player to leave and don’t want to keep them.

Free agency should never have been introduced. American crap infecting our game.

If the players want FA, then the clubs should be able to trade a player when & where they want to as well. The only caveat to that is that it can't be a player on the minimum wage as that would be grossly unfair. Any player above the median salary (which is now around $444K) is fair game IMO.

* no discounts for father-son or academy choices

* free agency compensation picks permanently scrapped

* priority picks and any other assistance picks permanently scrapped

* father-son qualification reduced to 1-game

* player nominates club of choice if father played for more than one club

* primary list is reduced to a maximum of 40 players only

* rookie list is scrapped permanently

* any player who is being paid above the median AFL salary figure can be traded to another club without their consent

* 95% minimum salary cap spend is abolished

St Kilda was interested in re signing him. They had an offer on the table.

Ultimately Battle chose to exercise his free agency rights. A club can't do anything about that.

I’ve been saying this for years but why does the AFL compensate teams for losing Free Agents? The rest of the competition should not be disadvantaged because a club lost a free agent. Not only will it remove another grey area for the game in the AFL’s secret formula for awarding compo but surely the club is already being compensated by having that players salary removed from their cap. If you are freeing up $800-$1milfrom your cap you are in a good position to go out and grab your own free agent.
AFL is full of compromises everywhere however this is one that must be removed.
It's rubbish.

But.... I do wonder what the comp would look like if struggling clubs didn't get compensated for losing gun players to the big clubs?

The crux of the issue is that players aren't leaving for money - they're leaving to play in big games for big clubs.

???

Why the *uck would you scrap everything - but extend the Father-Son nonsense???

Make Restricted Free Agents only available to bottom 10 clubs.

Use a Trade if they want to go to top 8 teams.

Unrestricted can go where they want.

No compo for either.

Just remove it completely. Clubs don’t need to compensated for a player they have for 7 years and can’t convince to stay.

Also what the St Kilda and GWS comp makes clear is the system wasn’t really designed for a marketplace where 5+ year contracts for non-superstar talent are becoming the norm.
Removing it would just turn 10-12 clubs into feeder clubs. There aren't enough star players ala American sports where the extra cap room is a game changer

It is a rort how it currently is though.

Not if you restrict RTA to bottom 10 clubs

The top clubs can't fit all the best players under their cap - everyone works under the same cap

This would be one of the most rortable rules you could possibly imagine.

Make it only for RFAs, not UFAs. If the buyer doesn't match, the FA ends, and you have to trade.

Simple,
Have a rolling 10 year FA gain table of movements / bands. If you fall deeply into the red, eg lost 3-4 good players with nothing back the other way, you get an end of first round pick which drops it by 2 players.

The whole 1 year cancel of compo only is too limited. We have data, it would be easy enough to fix it.

?

That doesn't sound very simple.
