they're not all gonna be perfect every time
he has a great work ethic
same with blakey ... last night was just one to forget
still want him, gulden, warner, florent et al to be taking the game on
when we don't, when we allow the opposition to dictate to us, we go back into our shell, that awful chip-chip-chip, across the field, go nowhere ...
I agree with that. Just don't like that our contested inside players cop so much flack for their ball use when a lot of the time our outside players are just as bad yet get praised for their games simply because they take the game on.

Yeah I think the group is just a bit down on belief and confidence. Not hugely - just a half second of hesitation that wasn’t there last year. It’s affecting theid disposal and it’s affecting their run - just a but reactive
That's exactly the right word... Reactive. The first half we were the exact opposite of that. We were dictating play in the middle and our receiving players were getting into positions that showed we were optimistic of winning each contest.

The pendulum swings the other way and the reactivity starts to creep in.

It's something that a coach like McRae seems so good at taking out of his team's game. They have the belief to just keep running and creating despite the balance of the game.

yeah, rowbottom cops the same criticism ... and he's a key part of our future midfield

same with first half v geelong
smashed them, outran them, outplayed them ...
same with late second quarter v c'wood
that's why i persist in saying we have the core of a very good team ... we've shown it, but we can so quickly go off the boil, which has to be a mental/confidence thing
heeney is kind of symbolic of that this season ... he can be so good, then suddenly look lost and broken

on that point of confidence, and momentum, etc ... has anyone commented on the decision against papley for slapping the ball forward to heeney, getting penalised for a throw, then getting a 50-metre against coz heeney played on?
that should've been a shot at goal, no way was it a throw
just one more of those awful, frustrating moments in an awful, frustrating season

McDonald is progressing as a young KPF. There will be games like this one where he won't get near it. Will need to learn to overcome this.

He's only going to get stronger (physically).

As for the buddy argument. He is still the best forward in the side.

The suggestion that you should retire your best player, because the youngsters can't compete with him, is something ChatGPT or a wonky airconditioner would say.

Based on Gulden's kicking the last two games I'd be okay with our youngsters giving any lessons from him a miss.

Last night Gulden had 24 kicks, next best was Campbell with 15.
Mills had 12, Rowbottom 11, Parker 9.
Gulden had 11 contested possessions, more than any of our other players.
He gained 815 metres. Next best was Blakey on 463.
Gulden went at an overall disposal efficiency rate of 77 %. Needless to say a better rate than our 3 main mids.

Sure Gulden turned the ball over 5 times. Parker & Mills both 4 times.
And yes because he is prepared to take on the centre corridor it can lead to bad turnovers.

Errol may on occasion take on more than he should, but it still comes off more often than not. And he is clearly backed by the coach to take the high risk, high reward kick.
He can get his own ball and he remains arguably our most dangerous and important player with ball in hand.
I'm more than happy for Gulden to continue to play the way he is.

Cant bring myself to read much of this thread.
from the few posts Ive read, we should drop Hickey, Heeney, Papley Parker, Buddy or McDonald, Horse. Im sure dropping the rest of the team gets a mention somewhere too.

Melican has been an interesting watch lately. He plays in a position of need for now and the future.
His career started well, but then he did his knee and lost (amongst other things) a few yards of pace. We tried to trade him last year, I think for salary reasons as hes on a back ended deal, but there were no takers.
Last night I watched him chase Bolton at full flight. Maybe I was deceived, but I watched Melican run faster than Bolton!!!
Speed is a great asset for a KPP, and it seems Melican has his back.
ps.. Im also keen on the developing Will Edwards for his size and pace.

As am I. But last night he was very costly at times and if any other player did that they would cop heat for it. I don't believe any player should be exempt from criticism. He can have a game that demonstrates his incredible work rate and young leadership whilst still letting the team down in some key plays. Not saying he should be dragged for it, I didn't even think it worth mentioning until I started seeing Parker copping flack for some of his ball use while Gulden's game was lauded. It's a bit of a double standard IMO.

someone posted earlier that parker was good ... i didn't think so ... fumbly and slow
but as you also posted earlier, i'm not gonna rewatch to confirm

He has a higher bar to be fair in my opinion, I expect more from him , Mills etc

I wish he would play for himself a bit more. That holding the ball in the third was because he kepy wanting to deliver the perfect pass but if hed just had a shot when the square was open...

That to me is backing yourself and in my mind different from playing for yourself

Yes he committed some costly turnovers but they were a relatively small proportion of his overall possessions. A lot of his possessions lead to creative play that advantages the team.

Under the Horse regime, few of our players are encouraged to be creative. Errol along with Blakey and Ollie buck the stultifying game plan Horse reverts to.

It was a poor decision but the 50 was because Papley carried on wasn't it? then Papley was too busy whinging to chase

I wouldn't drop parker at all even though i criticised his game, acknowledge he still has a crack even in an off game .

But now seasons done I'd love him to play a game as a forward and see how the midfield goes

dropping parker is not even a consideration

I know that's why i was stressing I wouldn't. But was more wanting to see others pick up the slack. See if we can cut the turnovers and passes to people under pressure. Use his hard work to keep the ball forward

If Heeneys giving you 17 with 3 goals in a night he was only ok then that's a good sign .

He made something out of nothing for one goal, he is exciting when in flight
