It's Geelong's flag to lose now

Bulldogs got to within 8 points at one stage during the 3rd quarter. They also kicked 4 gettable points in a row in the last quarter & had Geelong on the break. It was much like the 08' PF, they had plenty of the ball & chances to convert.

I remember the game well, Aker brought them back into the game in the 3rd.

Do you? The Bulldogs were within two goals for a grand total of 1 minute and 53 seconds after the twelfth minute of the first quarter. Six goals to two after that in the third translated to 'game over' before the players took their positions for the start of the fourth quarter.

On current form, Geelong are clearly favourites.

Apart from Menzel, they've had a great run with injuries.

They've managed their list and older stars well all year, and have them ripe at the right end of the year.

On top, they had their bye at the end of the season, which is a bonus.

We've had an unsettled side, and our legs are tired (we've lost our last 5 4th quarters).

A break is exactly what we need.

That was early in the third, and Geelong steadied pretty quickly (very similar to the start of the third last night really). Also, the cats took the foot of the pedal in the last - had any of those 4 shots actualy gone through, I reckon we'd have kicked up again.

This is probably what was said about Geelong in 2007 after just beating us in the Prelim, Geelong in 2009 when Port beat them at home, Collingwood last year after the drawn GF, etc.

The point is that BigFooty is notoriously bad for people jumping the gun on writing teams off.

Geelong never lost to port in 09. before sydney this year we hadnt lost a game at home since 2007.

I remember thinking the same thing in 09'.

Geelong lost a late season game against WB (who were pathetic against other top 4 sides) & then looked very flat against the Bulldogs in the QF, who had multiple chances to win the game.

Conversely St. Kilda won with ease in the QF & many thought it was their flag to lose. A week is a long time in football, 3 weeks is an eternity.

Could not be more wrong, geelong came out and kicked 8 goals to 1 against the dogs, and in the prelim the saints almost lost to the dogs whilst geelong pumped the pies.

Gotta get there first, I am sweating on the Prelim first. All three possible matchups have either beaten us or given us all we can handle, though finals are a different beast. We will obviously go in favourites, but nothing is certain until the final siren sounds and we will be coming up against a tough opponent just to qualify.

it's a bit true. collingwood were awful today and relied on experience in clutch moments to win. those shuey/selwood goals go through and it could have been a different story. however, collingwood's half back line were superb. they looked slow tbh
Awful you say?
They still won convincingly I reckon with injuries and lack of match fitness to their backline.
A weeks rest will do them good and they will still make the GF at least. You can't write them off just yet.

You think West Coast are better than Hawthorn at the 'g? Not taking anything away from them, but they are the only team we have close to a home ground advantage over that we have a chance of playing.

Apples and Oranges mate. I saw West Coast ruthlessly dismantle Geelong at subiaco in the 1st half. They seemed to have no problem coping with the MCG yesterday. I wouldn't be taking them lightly if I were Geelong.

On the other hand Collingwood, face a Buddy-less Hawthorn or a team that's lost it's last 10 matches against them. I'd say Collingwood have the easier path to the GF.

Ridiculous statement. Form in recent weeks not withstanding, over the course of the whole year Collingwood have been the best team. If it's a Collingwood v Geelong Grand Final, and Collingwood lose, it will be looked upon as a monumental choke in the context of the year they've had. If Geelong lost to Collingwood, it wouldn't be looked upon as anywhere near as harshly.

^^^ No this is a ridiculous statement. Clearly you don't know what choke means. To get shaky and lose to a team you should beat is a choke. We've clearly struggled against them this year. To lose would mean they have us covered, not a choke.

At the moment I think Geelong are easily the favorites. Purely based in the fact that I think their list is a lot healthier right now. It will be interesting to see how we go after the week off. We had a very early bye so haven't had a rest in a long time unlike Geelong.

I think sides are very very nervous in the first week of the finals, no matter who you are. It is all the hype, the anticipation, the anxiety and the pressure to put yourself in the best position. Unfortunately teams from 5-8 don't get that second chance, and sometimes a winner can pop up that is not really expecting to win, e.g. Sydney last night and perhaps Essendon today.

West Coast were wasteful yesterday, and the Pies a bit shaky, but Collingwood will put in a far different performance in two weeks, as will Geelong. I would expect the Cats and Pies to face off. Both Collingwood and Geelong will be far more settled and ready for the challenge in 2 weeks. I really can't see anyone getting close to knocking them over.

Some people here never learn anything do they? It's not "Geelong's flag to lose", the flag will be decided by the two teams good enough to reach the Grand Final. Geelong haven't done that yet, so it's hardly their flag to lose. I live in hope that people on this forum one day will get a clue what sport's all about, but I doubt it.

Agree :thumbsu:

You can't claim rights to anything without in some way being entitled to it, and no-one is entitled to the cup until they reach the GF. It could be a WCE & Syd GF! Gee i would love to see that actually!

Did people actually watch pies v west coast? I was at the game and was a great contest all day. Disregard last year for west coast and just remember they are a top 4 team. They are a darn good side. Was a close battle all day and collingwood came out on top. The game was never over and was a hard contest till the very very end. No junk time goals.

West Coast can play the G very well. It takes 1 bad game to miss a grand final berth and if i was the cats i wouldnt feel to confident against the eagles.

Collingwood v West Coast GF bookmark it.

That is what you 'want' to happen, it is doubtful that it will happen

how good was geel's 1st quarter v haw on fri night? they were smashed everywhere but the scoreboard. had haw converted their chances they would have been 5 goals up at 1/4 time and it is a different ball game from there. geel got over the line thanks to a couple of great bursts in the 2nd and 3rd quarters where they kicked multiple goals within a few mins. they were otherwise pretty average for the remainder of the night, and rioli bailey and hodge being hobbled in the 2nd half certainly helped them over the line

fri night v haw just reinforced to me that coll have geel's measure when it counts
Haven't they beaten you in 2 of the last 3 finals you have played against them?
