Traded Jack Bowes [Traded to Geelong with #7 for F3]

Never heard of a team who’s played finals for the last 120 years and the reigning premiers having room to facilitate such a trade, along with 3 other highly rated players, I’m sure your cap is legit, it’s the 3rd party deals that need to be seriously looked at.
We have like a dozen players over 30. We have no one left to pay by Bowes 3rd year

This is what you get for making fun of us for having too many old blokes. Now after winning the flag we're taking all the young talent in the comp, and the high draft picks to boot.

Hand 'em over.
Big footy nuffies have gone from crying “Geelong are perineal losers in finals” to “Geelong are cheating for being successful over a long period”

We've just lost, what? 8 players?

We've managed our cap amazingly well for the last decade and lost a fifth of our list that weren't Rookies or Cat B.

Selwood, Dahl and Higgins probably equated to a mil or so and the other 5 anywhere between 500k to 1mil. You can claim foul play all you like, but the reality is the Geelong Football Club is probably one of the best-managed sporting clubs in the whole world, not just Australia and it's taken 15-20 years of hard work from people like Costa, Cook, Wells, Bomber, Hocking, Carter, Scott, the players etc to get there. The players we recruit then have no racism scandals, no absurd contracts, no off-season camps, no controversy. A lot of clubs could learn a lot from Geelongs FO.

Equalisation at work. Afl really needs to look into giving teams extra salary cap to keep non home grown talent

Why would it matter when players take less to play for us?

We've built a system and culture that attracts players for the lifestyle and success, not the money.

Despite the claims, noone would have taken him on for $400k a year let alone $800k a year without the pick 7.

GCS should give pick 7 to Geelong but demand pick 18 and their future 1st.
The fact that Bowes isn't the main play, but is only being targeted for the pick that comes with him makes even a greater mockery of it all.

For all the saltiness out there - stop whinging at Geelong and start asking your club to get better. More so, get angry out how sh*t the gold coast have managed their cap and created a poor environment for they’re players. They pushed Jacks salary back years and then refused to pay him his money.

Cats have run this superbly. Loving all the melting. It’s glorious

I’m sure we can all remember the dark old days where Geelong was routinely nicknamed sleepy hollow and handbags by the football world because no one respected the club or wanted to play there.

Off field we were a shambles. Worse off than the bombers are now with absolutely no direction or motivation to be better. case in point it took a lot of hard work to get where we are right now. We didn’t get anything handed to us. One pick 7 and everyone goes crazy yet we deserve all this respect.

I’ll never wrap my head around why Gold Coast need to throw a pick 7 into the abyss just to offload him. Can they not afford to pay 50% of his salary for two years, let a club take him for $400k for a late pick, and then GC can take pick 7 to the draft? Without trying to sound like a nutter conspiracist, this has some funk about it.

That's how a salary dump works genius. You pay another team, usually via draft compensation, to take on a bad contract that you don't want to pay anymore.

1999, "Don't let Geelong become the next Fitzroy, become a member now." I still have that sign in my house.

It took radical changes from Costa, Cook and Bomber to overhaul our club. We made the right choices, other teams haven't. Just this off-season, North tried with Clarko, lol. Essendon tried with Thorburn, hilarious. It's possible with the right people making the right decisions.

They obviously dont have the cap room to do that. But then again they are bringing in ben long so who knows.

This.
Dont complain that our list is too old and then wonder where we are getting all our cap room from.
The answer is obvious and legal.

Suns have just brought in 2 new players. So how bad can their cap really have been?

Pick 7 surely will be better than Long or Berry, too. Why disnt they just smooth out Bowes' salary like Geelong are doing.

Salary dump, please.

You wearing a tin foil hat believing a conspiracy? You actually believe the AFL are secretly working for Geelong or something?

Are you one of those nuffies?

Damn Danger and his mind-reading ability

Because they're in a position where they don't need youth. They need players to steady the ship and who want to be there. Bowes on 1.6mil over 2 or 4 seasons isn't helping them nor is drafting another high-pick who might just leave in a few years.

Berry, Long and 2023 picks for academy players is a better position than overpaying Bowes and pick 7 for them.

I think you've made an important point about the lack of prime age star players on huge deals. The issues I have with the Cats cap/Bowes situation are:

1. Dangerfield and Cameron being on way below free market value. So much so that both teams matched/threatened to match their contracts but Geelong could trade way below their actual trade value to land them (the 3 picks for Jezza the greatest furphy of all time). Veterans are meant to sign with gun teams to win flags, not superstars in their prime. And if you do sign them you're meant to lose fringe players. Dusty and Lynch at Richmond are even on a good whack more money than the Geelong guys and Richmond have had to shed players (until this year).

Danger obviously pops up everywhere including his awful fishing show. Jezza seems to keep it easy on his farm. But it's 2 players who should be making 1.2 Million and are rumoured to be on 900k. That's your cap margin.

2. Bruhn and Henry apparently happy to sign at Geelong for very similar contracts that other clubs offered. These are prize recruits, they should be picking the most expensive deal from a range of home town teams. In a way I say good for them choosing lifestyle and success over cash but it's a unique advantage the Cats have. I'd like to do more to make young players harder to poach early in their careers across the board.

3. GC so happy to dump pick 7 due to their AFL handouts. 17 out of 18 clubs would have a fit if they had to dispose of 7. It's just another day in the life of the Suns.
You do realise that players do have a choice no one is forcing them to take unders

Stern was in the ownership of the NOP back then, as the NBA were the NOP owners, hence why he vetoed the trade as they deemed it to lower NOP value as a franchise when they were looking to sell them.

Am I aware of the situation m8

Geelong should have to wear the $800k salary for the rest of its duration

If that's how contracts worked, then yes, sure. Evidently, that's not how they work, which is why we're opting to stretch it out for a longer duration for less.

Essentially the same as cutting a player in the NBA and stretching their contract out rather than eating the deal and having it off the books quicker.

Whyy disnt they just smooth out Bowes' salary like Geelong are doing.

Because it's not their decision. Why would Bowes agree to take less pay when he's already gone through the lean years on a back-ended deal? He owes them nothing, they owe him $1.6mil. And if they no longer want to pay him that, why would he do them a favour?

Instead he gets to go play for the Premiers and keep his money.

I want to know, is this the first time some of you guys have ever seen a salary cap dump trade? It's something that always happens in American sports, especially the NBA.

Unlike the AFL, all NBA salaries are public domain
