Traded Jack Bowes [Traded to Geelong with #7 for F3]

Sincere question to confirm the rules, Geelong are allowed to restructure and contract his Gold Coast are not allowed to? Or both clubs are allowed but Bowes would not negotiate with GC but will with Geelong?
GC owed $1.6 under their existing contract which had two years left to run

His NEW contract with a NEW club has to include what is owed from the existing contract as well as the new amount for the other 2 years that has been put on the table

GC could not restructure the amount owing as it is an exisiting contract … Bowes would have to agree to a new contract

Any employee and employer can sign a new contract and void their old contract at any time. Bowes could sign in at minimum wage with GC if he wanted.

Did GC not offer him these terms or was he not interested in staying? This isn't risk free for geelong. 4 years at 500k is a big contract for a GC fringe player with a history of injuries. And pick 7 is nice but no certainty to be a good player. Realistically this isn't anywhere near as shocking as Richmond at their peak getting Lynch for free or Sydney getting Buddy for free.

Maybe, maybe not, but you are no longer paying 1.6 over 2. Its just a vanilla 500k a year over four years. Not really hard to do at all so why does pick 7 need to come along?
You'll have to ask the Suns. They put it on the table.

I think they might have looked at the cats being the only ones sniffing around and thought they would end up with not much in return. Might have thrown it on the table to start a bidding war of sorts with him and pump up his value. Might have backfired on them

To add also, we don't know what Geelong is giving up yet.

Might be a future 1st, then we have a run of injuries and they get pick 5 in a better draft. No need to lose your cool just yet

Actually it helps when your players wives are paid outside of the salary cap

Is this seriously the best you can do? How much money do you seriously think Toyota paid her for that? A couple of grand max

You and I both know this is not going to happen. I can assure you Geelong walk away if that is the case.

Danger can posture all he wants but Geelong are in this for pick 7

I totally agree that this situation is absurd, but suggestions that Geelong is rorting the system are baseless. This is entirely the AFL's fault.

As I'm sure others have pointed out, the main issue is how close the cap floor is to the max cap. It's pretty difficult for the Norths of the league to compete in trade week when they have to pay their 18th placed team only 5% less than the top team.

The AFL's salary cap rules, free agency, trade rules (the entire list management process and arrangement) have all been created piece by piece over decades, completely separate from each other, so while the rules make sense in silos, the whole system is broken when looked at as one piece.

The whole thing needs overhauling.

Minimum salary cap needing to be paid is what causes this
The aflpa won't give on the minimum cap since it's accepting less money for players.

Teams should be allowed to increase the number of players on their list so a North Melbourne can sign a bunch of extra supplementary players on say $150-250k each rather than pay massive overs for a few players. More mature agers getting an opportunity earlier and more chance of the good ones ending up at the lower teams and making them more competitive.

Players wives now not allowed to earn incomes.

Rules are getting pretty tight now. Yikes

So do we have details on his new contract?

If it is only 400000 for another two years then Bowes needs to fire his manager.

He's seen the offers from other clubs - wouldnt be much more, if any, and wants to go to a successful side. While the money is good either way, it would be as much about being at Geelong for 4 years - guaranteed money and big chance at playing finals and a premiership .

I was thinking about buying a new Hyundai but Mrs Hawkins has swayed me to pick up a new Toyota. Would be perfect to swing past Dan Murphy's and pick up a few cartons of fruity beer. Should compliment her Christmas dinner recipe perfectly

I think the point is more that we get bombarded by Christopher on hourly broadcasts about how selfless his players are and they all play for massive unders, Tom hawking is only on 300k a year etc...yet player partners are brand ambassadors for Toyota, Dan Murphy's etc. Nothing against Mrs Hawkins, but if she lived in Adelaide to a banker would these companies be banging her door down to be the face of the company ?

We are paying 2 mil over 4 years …he was owed 1.6 from his last contract with the suns

Maths isn’t your strong point is it?
His salary … hence the salary dump is 1.6m over the next 2 years… which is why GC is doing the deal…
IMO his salary should be 1.6m over the next 2 years… it’s bullshit that his salary can be soften over 4.

Which Geelong player? Jack Bowes will

Jack Bowes signed a contract in good faith.. 2ml over 4 years … back ended … GC decide to rip up contract after 2 years in which they paid him unders… forcing him to take a pay cut over the next 4 years at another club!!!!

Like I said who in their right mind are going to trust GC with back ended deals?

Big Brother would be proud of the Doublethink on this forum when it comes to Geelong.

"Duh huh their list is a declining mob of ageing over-rated spuds and journeymen..."
"WHERE IS GEELONG GETTING THE CAP FOR THIS AWESOME AMAZING PREMIERSHIP WINNING TALENT??!"

"Ha ha Sleepy Hollow, boonies, meth head central, Corio, Norlane...."
"GEELONG HAVE SUCH AN UNFAIR LIFESTYLE AND LOCATION ADVANTAGE!!"

"Geelong are an irrelevant minnow club who just got lucky and nobody cares about anyway"
(1000s pages of salt and melts when anything remotely involving us happens)

Im concerned with the lack of scrutiny from the usual media tweeters...

The Pres of the AFLPA just announces that he was interested in Bowes months ago (yet Geelong only approached the suns after pick 7 came into play) and the tweeters just buy it?

The rules are mysteriously changed so Geelong can receive a high pick as payment for taking on a contract, then they just restructure the contract and spread it out anyway. And none of the tweeters question it?

If Hawthorn, Carlton, Essendon, Richmond or Collingwood had made this trade, most of the usual suspects in the media would be reflecting the public opinion, that it stinks.

But for Geelong, its just crickets.

They must have some very good lobbyists behind the scenes.
It's the Whateley effect, or so I'm lead to believe. Good one, Gerard!

Noone is blaming Geelong for gaming the system and profiting off GCS' absolute incompetence.

Its 100% AFL and GCS being terrible.

Geelong isn't part of that contract between GC and Bowes... They can enter a new one that is satisfactory to Bowes and Geelong...

Mate, you're talking about something around 10-20 all combined somehow filling a gap I the hundreds of thousands. This ain't it
