News Jack Dyer Stand -Demolition Has Begun

I have problems with this issue being raised right now. Much better to bring it up in the off season. This is really poor timing.

The coterie guys on this board should think through the ramifications that this could entail. Specifically someone deciding to stand for the board on the back of a retain our heritage ticket. We do not need this kind of thing on the radar right now.

And for those in favour, let's pretend the stand did have heritage protection. What would be your workaround? Could you live with a (smaller?) development on the unused land Between the stand and the northern goals? Could you envisage lobbying instead to annex land where the car park is now? Is that an absolute no go, and why? Not only that, is the houli foundation a no go if it can't be part of this development if so, why?

I personally think any future redevelopment should be in sync with whatever plans there are for the train station (if any). I also think this should be put forward as an option to the members to vote on.

Disgusting.

But not surprising, the softening up job has been underway on this board and elsewhere, now phase II begins.

Stand has been renovated and rebuilt over the years anyway has it not?

Nostalgia is well and good but it doesn’t mean standing still. The best heritage buildings and structures are either meticulously maintained over the years and regularly renovated/redone to maintain their original charm. The Jack Dyer Stand doesn’t fit into this.

We are better off keeping certain aspects or parts to pay homage to a stand that has many memories attached but is not a truly significant part of the Richmond identity.

If we wanted to keep the stand work should’ve started decades ago to maintain and preserve it for the future.

The gains well and truly outweigh the cost in this case.

Why can't there be compromise? Has anyone on the board crunched the numbers, and if not, why? That's what I'd like to know.

Not an expert on these things but typically with a poorly maintained old structure like that are there not significant structural deficiencies that would prevent major work being done to it? If so that takes up a huge chunk of space.

The article highlighted the key issues as to why we can’t just “chuck a stand” down the end/side. We have huge demands staff wise and facility wise now. We are actively engaged in a lot of football areas and also non football engagements. We need floor space to build proper buildings and facilities and we can’t get that anywhere but where the stand currently sits.

Utilising fixtures and materials to create fittings and art, etc and having archival photographs and a story in the no doubt improved museum is enough tribute and respect to the old girl imo.

Let’s see what the club plan to do in this regard.

Also have to remember that the government is footing the bill and won’t be spending millions extra to preserve a broken down old stand, I’m sure they will look try to incorporate the past into the new design in some way.

I'd like to see a full ground redevelopment. Rebuild the Jack Dyer Stand, terraces that went from the Punt Road goals to Brunton Avenue goals, which also included a walkway that linked Richmond station with the ground. This would also give the benefit of keeping pedestrians off the road post game.

Something like this but not as big as these were the 40,000 seat plans released a couple of years ago. It would make PRO a great venue for watching games where you could easily have 10-15k watching VFL games before heading to the MCG.

I wouldn’t get too excited this won’t fly unless significant funding support from state and federal govt , we can’t afford 60mn on our own . You’d reckon we could still do a lot with 10-20mn if that were option B . **** more admin quarters , rent space in Richmond, focus on training amenities and space that can double as hospitality rev producing assets

No need to waste money building a 40k stadium , 10-15 would be just fine for vfl and women’s

Spreading our resources around is actually going to not help that much. Not only do we lose the identity and togetherness of being in our own space, but you lose the ability to cross pollinate talent between areas and departments.

Surely after our 2016 overhaul (and the years leading up to it) the writing is on the wall as to how we should approach issues of growth, culture and successes.

It should be holistic and measured. We need a space for the future where we can have all of our great Richmond minds doing great Richmond stuff together.

Wasn't saying to build a 40k seat stadium, just using the images to show what would be an ideal look. Kills 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak, redevelops the ground and gets the public off Brunton Ave/Punt Rd pre and post game

I accept your point however non football related dept could work off site without rocking that aPproach. Having all of your football dept under the one roof is the real imperative

Makes the culture and identity stronger. Why would we want our non FD staff to be opposition supporters locked up in an office away from the club?

To get the best out of our staff FD and not they should be together in a Richmond environment, working together, sharing the journey. Our admin staff are under the pump this time of year just like our football staff. It’s a club, a collective and it should be a shared journey.

Are you in HR by any chance

Hope they find a way to rebuild it. Have NFI what sort of work it would involve but I’d love to see it on the outer wing. Absolutely loved the footage from GF day when it was rocking.

I’m glad they’ve committed to keep Richmond in Richmond, which comes before all else.
That’s my no1wish to

1) timing is about lobbying state and federal libs prior to the respective elections. Vic vote is november, that only two months of public lobbying time

2) Cannot annex the carpark, that not on our lease. as KiwiTiger confirmed months ago, thats a part of the area under MCC admin, not us

3) Houli Foundation is elsewhere today, but as per the article, its being used to help justify $40m of govt spending on a professional footy teams facility. Just like KGI was what got us the Swinburne Centre, its KGI, HF, and the womens teams that are getting us (if successful) this development

4) the train station isnt the big mega development the libs proposed. That got shelved with Melbourne Metro. The talk about the train station is primarily about the bridge linking the station to the G over Brunton Ave.

5) the work around implications of keeping the JD stand are mentioned in the article. Millions of dollars of additional money being spent to preserve it and design around it. That will be coin out of the clubs pocket, as we have zero chance of govt funding the protection of a non-heritage protected footy stand in poor nick.

Agreed. The members never vote on anything anymore.

We had a vote just two years ago. Simon Wallace and Peter Casey challenged Kerry Ryan and Emmitt Dunne. And of course we nearly had an EGM thanks to Focus on Football

If you want a vote, there is nothing stopping you or any other member contesting one of the seats that is spilled every year.
