News Jack Dyer Stand -Demolition Has Begun

I’m pretty blunt when it comes to the question of redevelopment.

Get with the times or get left behind.

If the stand has to go, it goes.
Time to make new memories in this new era of Richmond success.

If there is going to be new terracing along the Punt Road wing then I'd love to see each part named after one of our great past champion players.

Here's 12 suggestions I like:

1. The Neville Crowe Terrace,
2. The Jack Titus Terrace,
3. The Roy Wright Terrace,
4. The Allan Geddes Terrace,
5. The Bill Morris Terrace,
6. The Mopsy Fraser Terrace,
7. The Des Rowe Terrace,
8. The Roger Dean Terrace,
9. The Billy Barrot Terrace,
10. The Royce Hart Terrace,
11. The Kevin Bartlett Terrace, and
12. The Francis Bourke Terrace.

Gee the list could go on and on.

Have 12 rows of seats, and instead of row A, row B, etc, you have one for each premiership....so row 1920, row 1921, etc.

28. The Jack Higgins Terrace.

The real issue here is area or the lack of it .
Unfortunately when the new building was erected nobody envisaged all the forming of new clubs and other organisations and foundations within our club and decisions were made bc of the state of poverty we were in. The best outcome here would be to remove the new building as it is barely two levels above ground and it occupies a large land area. Yes this would mean temporary relocation and massive costs, but it’s a long term solution rather than a patch up job.
I can’t see the effort of blowing 60 mil to increase our capacity from 5000-8000 plus a few extra rooms added and then having to do the same thing over in ten years time. It sounds desperate and reeks short term.
A new 4-5 Storey building should then be erected as this is the neighborhood character of Richmond and other inner city suburbs. The building will of course need to be designed to resemble a Goliath sporting complex as well as a Powerful organisation.

Potentially this could even include working with the government to understand how we can integrate the space with Richmond station
That's the path to focus on for me- who has a vested interest in developing the JDS side of PRO?
-Richmond (expansion)
-A developer (gets the job)
-Possibly the likes of Benny Gale personally (big project, path to a top job in AFL)

Now, who has vested interest in the Brunton Av side of PRO?
-The three above-mentioned groups
-The PTV (Richmond is 3rd biggest station in Melb and is a dogs breakfast)
-The AFL and MCG/MCC (a significant percentage of their patrons have to cross Brunton Av to get to the games, only will increase as parking in Yarra Park is on the nose)
-Vic Roads (major thoroughfare, how there haven't been deaths on Brunton on game days, I don't know, solutions desperately req.)

SO. Compare the lists, and tell me why we would be thinking a moment about the JDS side. It's a side show.
There is a massive issue that massive organisations (PTV/AFL/MCC/VicRoads) need to solve- it's on our doorstep at a time when we need to expand.

Knocking down the JDS is small thinking. Big thinking is to be a part of the Brunton Av/Richmond station solution for all those large entities, and getting what we need in return.

Pull that rabbit out of the hat Benny, and you will be heir to Gill's throne!

The two parts to it ties into why this is a perfect storm scenario and time to go big.

So we have:
Reworking Brunton Ave.
State Election later this year.
Federal Election either later this year or early next.
Richmond is currently successful, meaning we both have huge numbers (and Pollies like spending on things that please big numbers) and able to make a decent contribution ourselves.

Getting pollies to fork out for Richmond station/Brunton Ave/MCG access with 2 elections coming up is pretty much a no brainer, so while they're at it, it shouldn't be too tough to get that redevelopment to include that side of PRO, and as the chequebooks are out anyway, we might as well try and push as hard as we can and get the whole place redone.

The Brunton road connecting bridge will happen, that's a no brainer

The massive redevelopment of Richmond station itself however is years away.

All spending is pretty much focused on the Melbourne Metro right now, and after that the airport train.

Also Metro will mean Pakenham line (one of Melbournes busiest) will bypass Richmond station completely. Taking those punters away from Richmond will reduce demand considerably, and allow greater use of the station for other lines (as it frees up one platform - early imo guess is Lilydale line will go stand alone from alamein and Glen Waverley)

Wait for the East Melbourne residents group to *** everything up.

They will be busy with the Dee's proposal for a six story building and a new oval in the ne corner of Yarra Park (If they pick it over Melbourne Uni or the other options being considered)

Ours isn't going to chop down trees, theirs will

Agree it would be good to do a total rebuilt but would be costly and hard to justify tearing down a relatively new building. If we are going to push as hard as we can for funding for this sort of thing it should be done in the next two weeks to ensure we have momentum and can con them into thinking we will be a powerhouse for years to come! (Before we get bundled out of the finals recruit Tom Lynch, upset the apple cart and slink back down to the cesspool of the footy world) ;)

I agree , but it’s the long term look as I can’t see putting 60mil into something that will give us a short term benefit.

Could be a case of the current infrastructure and transport (station and the intersection) can’t accommodate a true long term solution, in which case this is a stop gap for the next 10+ years before any serious work on the transport hub would be finished?

Does anybody seriously think the government would agree to fund tearing down a relatively new facility that cost 20 odd million?
Never going to happen.

They're not going to tear that down. A few renovations (e.g. stupid tiny windows being fixed), but most will remain as is.

I'm torn about this.

The expansion is necessary and now is the best time to do it. We're winning which means members, merch, sponsors - all cashed up. And being able to watch a VFL curtain-raiser from the Maurice Rioli Room because of bigger windows would be pretty ****ing sweet.

But I love the Jack Dyer Stand, possums and all. And the things inside the JDS, like the museum. And the can bar. (Maybe I should have known the dream was over when the price went up to $6 / can.)

My fear is that Punt Road ends up like that dank toilet, Princess Park.
