News Jack Dyer Stand -Demolition Has Begun

There's only a handful of these stands left now. Those that are, have been repurposed and restored and remain as reminders of our cultural heritage. And of all of them, the Punt Road Stand (The Jack Dyer Stand) is the most iconic. It is seen by thousands and thousands of people everyday. It's a sign post to not just the football club, but to the suburb of Richmond. Retain it, have it repurposed and build the new development alongside, and if that needs to be compromised, then for the sake of saving something special, that's what we've got to do.
Hammer. Nail. Head.

I think we need to separate comments about the condition of the stand, and how expensive it might be to restore, from comments on its significance.

Q1. Is the stand significant to the people of Richmond and Victoria?

Q2. Can it be restored, how much will it cost, etc.?

No hammer. No nail. And no bloody head

When I went to the Maracana in Rio, apart form the buzz of the fans match the most interesting party was going to a place that held nearly 200K at a event and how they did it.

Jack Dyer stand simply does not register..

Even seeing Boco Juniors in Buenos Aires there is no old stand they associate as some kind of pilgrimage site when tourists go and have a look

Look at all the stadiums that get demolished spectacularly over the years in USA
premier league clubs also a bit like that, Soton left St Mary's, Everton is on the move soon, Arsenal left Highbury, West Ham left Upton Park, there are many others I'm sure.

but on the other hand, the SCG is revered as a cricket ground because it has kept it's history in tact.

Yeah, but they still play at the SCG and that's the national team state venue. The have replaced some old stands there to

MCG is more revered and doesn't have any heritage stands.
not in the same way, we get the big crowd numbers, but outside the Vic bubble, no one thinks the MCG is special as a stadium.
Which makes sense because it looks like any other generic modern stadium, it is not special in any way.

But they always say how special the SCG members stands are, and how special the scoreboard and the hill are at Adelaide.

The MCG has far more history, but no historic stands. Go figure.

And since 1999, the nrl Grand final, SOO and all the other major events have been moved to Olympic stadium.

They kept the stand and the sports moved away.

well true, I mean when you build an Olympic Stadium, you need to do something with it, this is why noone wants to host Olympics anymore, to the point that Brisbane is hosting in 2032!

Personally I dislike watching field sports in purpose-built athletic stadiums, but I digress.

The SCG and Adelaide Oval are well-used and functional stadiums. They are also unique stadiums. Iconic.

That's what I want Richmond to be.

9 out if 10 Richmond supporters want it to be demolished according to the poll thread.

Have you considered that maybe the small handfull of renegades like yourselves are wrong!?

Attendance at MCC Tours of the MCG and surveys of patrons attending same show a strong interest, particularly from overseas tourists*.

... are we talking about the same MCG here? The one that's revered by international Sports fans from Britain to India and beyond?

People come to the city for a chance to watch sport there

Best part of this is the underground carpark. The media can **** off and if any of them try to sneak in while a car is going in they can be battered like a fried flake without anyone being able to see it. 😁

It is very sad to lose the old stand but like most others I think there is no sensible way around it. 😩

Well, it has no historic stands because they were demolished, but there was a great deal of angst about demolishing the Members pavilion- out cry from all around the world. The new stands are impressive but in the years to come when people look at photos of the MCG, the background will be totally void of any cultural relevance. It will be nothing more than a bland backdrop. Adelaide oval's redevelopers were smart to retain the old scoreboard but importantly, the grassed area behind the goals, because the developers knew the cultural importance of both. Heritage stands like those at the SCG, or Bendigo, the Junction Oval or the Brunswick Street Oval still resonate and place the ground in a cultural context. Photos of the MCG will only look like any other recent stadium.

Strangely enough, I care more about what is happening at the stadium than the stadium itself. Anyone who was at the G in 2017 on that special day will remember it as a magnificent event, irrespective of where it was.

If the JD stand could be moved and rebuilt somewhere then that would be great. It is unfortunately in the way of the realignment of the orientation of the playing surface and while a minority of people will miss it, others will cherish the fact the decision and new development will ultimately keep the RFC at Punt Rd for the foreseeable future, which should be the thing of most importance to any RFC supporter.
