I rate Gunston, more the question whether you're recruiting him out of need, or due to the family connection.
If he does as well as this thread says, he could definitely be useful. You could play him and Crameri as foils to Hurley, releasing Carlisle back to bolster the backline in a post-Fletcher world (or if Pears/Hooker's injuries continue). So definitely useful.

But yeah, not exactly our highest priority need.

so what's the conclusion - what is it going to take for the hawks to get gunston? is shoenmakers the trade? +/- draft picks (which direction)?

He should be Hawthorn's primary target for the trade period. Once Gilham and Roughy come back the only piece of the puzzle left is a 3rd marking forward. He also provides insurance if Roughy takes longer than usual to recover.

I think I read an article this morning about Essendon not wanting him because they had enough talls? not sure how true that is.

Either way I think he's much better suited to Hawthorn than Carlton, North and Melbourne because they need more power forward types and should be looking at Dawes rather than Gunston.

Walker, Aaron Edwards and Jurrah seem to have Gunston's roles covered at those respective clubs. Hawthorn has a gaping hole in this area and there really isn't anyone else similar available.

I highly doubt that Dawes will leave the Pies but if he does want out I wonder if Adelaide would do a deal with Gunston and perhaps a second round or swap of first round picks?

Victorian clubs in race for homesick tall Jack Gunston

Herald Sun though, so the Bombers could have him all but signed.

Can be read two ways

1. Making it sound like Essendon have said no to Gunston but if we get him we are a bunch of liars and you cant believe anything we say.

or

2. Hes just saying that hes not suited to essendon because we have alot of talls(which isnt true) so we shouldnt get him even though we are into him.

Hurley and Crameri are better players than him not sure why you would put resources into him when you could be going for a good midfielder?

Personally, I think the Crows should go after one of these guys in return for Gunston.

Levi Greenwood ~ North
Ryan Schoenmakers ~ Hawks
Luke Tapscott ~ Melbourne
Christian Howard ~ Bulldogs

Agreed, assuming you can find the right roles for any of them. Schoenmakers would be better as a third tall fwd, in a way, directly taking over from Gunston's role in a sense.

Tapscott and Howard could both be very useful HBF/outside mids.

Greenwood I'm not so sure about purely because I think Adelaide have several similar players already but he is a decent player who will be much better next year than he was this season with the injury issues he had early on.

You serious? Schoenmakers? You should be offering Brad Moran for him.

Not sure why Schoenmakers is copping it from all quarters. I'd be doing everything possible to ensure that we keep him. The kid's just 20 with only 30 games under his belt and is shaping up to be a key position prospect.

I think the he's been unfairly judged (by many Hawks supporters as well) and any trade including him would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Tapscott's probably their best option IMO

Crows would more than likely want a key defender for Guntson. He's a quality player & has a lot of upside, probably would ask for Stratton. Doubt they could get him though.

Pretty sure Melbourne won't be looking to trade Tapscott.

The Saints have resigned Gilbert & Armitage, so we probably don't have the ammunition to trade for Gunston.

Lol trading Stratton would cause a riot at Waverley park. He's worshipped by hawks supporters especially around these parts. Shoey for gunston is fair but he's highly rated internally so just won't happen.

It's gonna have to be young or Ellis and a draft pick etc which is why we aren't favorites to get him. Or maybe lisle?

Hey I would do that trade in a heartbeat.

Gunstonmania is out of control

Not to mention he is being played out of position. He has just as much talent as Gunston does.

Jack Gunston for Pat McCarthy.

I'm not saying I necessarily want this trade, although it's not like I have any say in it anyways.

However, it does give Adelaide a highly rated junior KPD. And an Adelaide boy.

I'd say Schoenamkers is a better offer though. Even though I don't really rate him, he's further developed than McCarthy.
