Also, I think its right to say that Jack Gunston has kicked more Grand Final goals than anyone in the AFL right now...
Yep, Gunston has 12, Franklin 11.

Jack Gunston 4 games (3-0-1) 12
Lance Franklin 5 games (2-0-3) 11
Jarryd Roughead 5 games (4-0-1) 10
Josh Kennedy 3 games (1-0-2) 6
Luke Breust 4 games (3-0-1) 6
Shaun Burgoyne 6 games (4-0-2) 5
Isaac Smith 4 (3-0-1) 5
Cyril Rioli 5 games (4-0-1) 5
Tom Hawkins 2 games (2-0-0) 5
Brendon Goddard 3 games (0-1-2) 4
Kieren Jack 3 games (1-0-2) 4
Steele Sidebottom 3 games (1-1-1) 4
Gary Ablett 3 games (2-0-1) 4
Luke Hodge 5 games (4-0-1) 4
Travis Varcoe 3 games (2-0-1) 3

Every season in which Gunston has played as a permanent forward Hawthorn have made the top 4. Surprise surprise except for last year when he played as a defender for god knows what reason which had a negative impact on the forward-line. I said at the start of the year that Gunston now playing as a forward again changes the teams entire structure for the better.

Ladder position since 2012

2012: 1st (39 goals)
2013: 1st (46 goals)
2014: 2nd (58 goals)
2015: 3rd (57 goals)
2016: 3rd (51 goals)
2017: 12th (19 goals)
2018: 4th* (48 goals)

Luke Darcy is a AA selector, going by the way he’s gushing about Gunner, I gotta feeling if he has his way Gunston will be in the 22 as he should be. Along with Breust!

We have had some young blokes emerge but the biggest difference between last year and this has been that Breust, Gunston, Smith and Stratton have all had as good years as they ever did during our premiership years.

Gunston and Breust should both be All Australian this year

Reckon it's more likely to be Smith next year if Rough stepped down with Jack getting a VC perhaps

Yeah Smithy would be the most obvious call if Roughy stepped down, but if they wanted to skip a generation and appoint a longer term captain, then I feel probably Gunna would be next in line over say Shiels or JOM considering both on- and off- field leadership.

Surround him with guys like Roughy, the two current VCs, McEvoy and JOM and I feel it's a pretty enviable leadership brigade.

I see Gunston as a more appropriate captain than Smith. Seems a little tougher, bit more flexible (which means he can support across multiple lines if the captain needs to help out), more gravitas. Smith is an amazing player, but a bit more of a fun kid kind of guy. Jack is the one i'd want leading.

Off topic- but whilst we are talking skippers, anyone else think big boy could captain the club

On [device_name] using BigFooty.com mobile app

I remember when we grabbed him there was talk about his leadership ability and the fact he was considered a future captian at the Saints.

Suprised he is not in our leadership group TBH...

Oh and congrats on finally getting recognized by those idiots as being one of the best footballers going around

And yet still so underrated. On social media and radio when discussing unlucky, smith and brown kept popping up with Gunners the one to make way.
Failing to realise this is the fourth year of being nominated

Why on earth would anyone who knows a bit about football think gunston should be the one replaced in AA team!? Got reamed in 2015 ( along with Izzy and Hodge) so it’s only fair that he gets a guernsay in a brilliant season he has put together.
Plus, he, just like Breust and Gray are considered ‘ Crafty Forwards ‘ so not sure how big fat Hawkins or all limbs and height Brown are even in the same description of Gunner??
I pumped my fist more for Gunno then Tommy and Punky as they were shoo ins!! Deserved his guernsay as much as any in the 22.
I don’t know how Grimes, Yeo and Cogs didn’t make it though. Gray, Edwards, Whitfield, Stewart and 1 goal a game frwd Dangerflog have no business being there while those three were omitted.
In fact, Isaac Smith should have been rewarded as well . 23 disposals a game plus 24 goals for the year.

Not sure that this is particularly relevant, and also think it undersells gunston a little.

AA should be about a single, exceptional, season. None of this crap about a "body of work" or "missed out last year, so deserves it" (though I do know i'm being a little naive).

I think Gunston's season is nothing short of exceptional. To think that he has kicked circa 50 goals, spending an extraordinarily large time down back and on the wing, shows just how ridiculously good a utility he is.
