Traded Jack Lukosius - Joins Port Adelaide as part of a 3-way trade with Collingwood and Gold Coast

Salary smoothing I'd imagine. Only 24, he should be at or only just past his peak in 5 years time.
That, and even if he never improves from what he currently is, he has proven to be an AFL quality player. He has 116 AFL games and 2 reserves games over his career to date. There should still be some improvement in him too as a 24yo key forward who has has played most of his games as a defender. Wherever Lukosius ends up playing, I don't think that a 5 year deal is at all unreasonable.

It’s funny that some of your fellow Crows fans maybe get a bit fixated on getting SA talent to return “home” regardless of their suitability. I, like you also don’t see how Luko makes your team better atm, agree that quality mids should be the focus
If we get Dawson, Rankine, Cummings, Lukosius all back to Adelaide in 4 years, along with Port doing its bit with JHF, it makes clubs reconsider drafting Adelaide boys, leaving the door open for a slide.

Adelaide has been avoiding Vic metro in the first round for years now, it should go both ways.

Funny you call it a fixation but have access to all local talent each year, clearly next level.

Has he been a difference maker for GC? Had he taken a game apart in a quarter before? He kicked 5 a few times, but not in close games.

Having said that, he adds something, perhaps a bit of class? There has always been the hope he can be the connector.

If he can play like his 2023 year he's worth bringing in.

Yes we have access but in an emerging market, South Australia has been an AFL state since it began.

Not sure your thoughts on fixation of some SA fans and Queensland players hits the mark, Queensland doesn’t seem to actively chase players from the state, certainly not with the same fever SA does, anyway that’s my opinion.

It could be argued that Luko actually doesn’t want to go back, has been clearly stated he’d prefer to stay just as Charlie Ballard and Sam Day did, Rankine was the exception but had to be made the highest paid to get him back. By the way, that’s not a criticism of Adelaide, I have family in Adelaide and actually always enjoy it when I travel for work.

Do you mean in the AFC?

He isn't

I mean Luko is on a grossly inflated contract, as was Rankine and will be Ballard.

I get why that's the case mind you, sporting franchises struggle on the GC

It’s absolutely true that franchises struggle on the Gold Coast, I can’t argue. Hence the support to make it a success, so far the uptake in junior players seems to suggest it’s going to work.

I know for a fact Rankine was offered a lot less to stay at the Suns but hey he’s turned out to be worth every penny. As for Ballard, I love the kid, worth every cent

Reportedly his contract was $700-750K (according to the AFL Rich list last year) but his extended contract is $825K which is still below Laird's $850K, I would have thought Rankine would be the first to earn over $1M after the significant CBA increase (likely still will happen).

If you want to believe Herald journos. Just guesses. Some players stated it's BS.

Oh yes Rankine came to our club and took unders cos he's a good bloke but everyone who left our club is a mercenary.
What? He was offered more than GCS but nowhere near the $900K reported at that time as Laird was still our highest paid at $850K. Rankine will be our highest paid in a few years and be our first player earning over $1M.

Highest paid player on your list, don’t think he’s pulling in anything under 800k and that’s only going to go up as he is recognised as your best player

And he’s worth it, puts bums on seats

Citation?
Jon Ralph?

There have been numerous comments in media locally that he wasn't being paid the estimated $4M+ across 5 years.

In fact he didn't even sign a 5 year contract. He signed a fairly standard 3 year contract, with performance clauses. And what is fairly standard for Adelaide, no automatic increases aligned with CBA increases.

The linked article suggests his contract was in the $7-750K range.

He signed an extension this year to take him out to the end of 2027 (another 2 years). I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had an increase with the extension.

As someone else mentioned, he didn't come for "unders". It just wasn't the $8-850K over 5 years many were bandying around.

"Was Adelaide paying Rankine an outrageous $800,000-plus per season on a deal that he could never hope to live up to?
Or were they dragging him out of Gold Coast for the cheap-as-chips $600,000 a season despite all the wild estimates?
The truth is understood to be in the middle, and with an asterisk that will end up making Rankine something of a bargain for the Crows.
The AFL Rich 100 understands Rankine is paid around $700,000-$750,000 across the life of his contract depending upon performance-based clauses."

who cares what Rankine is being paid, he's worth it and probably more. Never understood the criticism leveled at Adelaide for paying him 800k or whatever it was. He is one of the biggest talents in the league and was a lock for the all australian side this year if he made the needed games cutoff
One of the all time bone head calls to allow him to go and have Lukosius on our books at almost a mill a year for the next 2 years, and for GC that's saying something
