It's important to have players to take over Toovey when he can no longer be as good as he was. That time might come this year or the next. He won't be around forever. It would be a mistake to delist Ramsay with Toovey nearing the end given we've invested some time in to Ramsay.
On Williams I'm not sold, thought he played his best footy in the middle when given some free license, just don't see him as a great lock down player which is what we need most.

Whilst I agree with you on future planning re Toovey because as a speedy defender losing his pace with sub par skills the end could come quick. I'm just not sure that Ramsay is an option to replace him because I'm not sure he can play on the same range of players (tall, small or medium).

We've still got a high number of guys who can play lock-down roles down back. Toovey, Williams, Goldsack, Marsh depending on whether you see him as a KPP then of the new ones Maynard can play that role and so can Abbott.

If you're looking for a specialist long term stopper Abbott for me would be the guy I'd be working to develop into that role.

The likes of Williams and Maynard I want moving up the field in the future but with Abbott his speed is elite, he has big time strength but then also can kick well. He is still raw and is not nearly ready to go this year and that will become obvious at VFL level early, but if you want that role fill long term I'd want Abbott developing for that purpose.

Otherwise short term even if you want to go with a hyper youth policy Maynard and Williams would be able to fill those roles with Williams to take the quicker guys and Maynard to take the other option.

From a list balance perspective I find it interesting that you're making a case for a lock down guy. The thing we've long been missing is in my view anyway is actually the elite rebounders to compliment the vast array of lock down bigs and smalls. We're starting to introduce some small/medium types who can rebound and with time take over those positions down back, but as a back half at the current time finding a role playing small stopper down back for me anyway is way down our list of needs with a further elite young key forward, outside speed and some elite onballers more what I'd have on my shopping list, with those top of list talents more what we're lacking rather than the role players which we've shown we can pretty easily find in the rookie draft with consistency when we want to.

When Toovey first started he was a whipping boy, could've easily been delisted before he debuted. Kicked 4 goals agaisnt Richmond one night and it turned a bit. Hes been a solid player down back without being outstanding. For me he should get 1-2 more years but if he can't produce his 2010 form he shouldn't be gifted games. Ramsay has shown enough for me to suggest he needs an opportunity at the big time, he's getting to the right age of playing in the seniors. I would at least like to see some sort of transition take place. Whether he is a like for like swap I'm unsure like most Collingwood supporters but without trying it we will never know. I think that would be a postive step towards the next tilt at a flag at least.

I don't know what games TG watches (if any?) but we are not short on lock down defenders of smalls or talls. That's rubbish.

What we are short of is rebounding defenders (or proven ones) and that's where we need to see how the likes of Scharenberg (when fit), Langdon, Sinclair and Oxley go.

I think Ramsay needs to add more dash to his game to make it and i like the promise he showed with that little dash against Hawthorn last week. More of that please!

Which one of those is locking down a Wingard, Cryil type to win us a game? Be serious. We aren't short of decent small lock down defenders? You sure you watch footy you mean? Small forward against is have been smashing us for 1-2 years.

Williams locked both of them down last year!!

From memory Rioli only got a couple of cheapies.

Ramsay has been very disappointing for a large portion of his VFL career.

His footskills have been a major let down, and his shutdown work is okay but nothing to get excited about.

He has a great attitude and good pace but for me he is just an Alan Toovey without the same defensive abilities, won't be on the list in 2016. We have a heap of young mid sized defenders and Ramsay will be at the bottom of the picking order.

Williams Sinclair Oxley Scharenberg Langdon Maynard Manteit, I prefer all of them to get a defensive gig.

Ramsay will definitely be a player.. He is hard at it, has very good pace & can kick the footy well. He is much better option than Sinclair & williams.. He would be in my best 22.

Seen this kid play VFL & he will only get better. bottom age player

I went no but at the same time don't see too much VFL footy. He just hasn't shown me enough at the AFL level yet and it's getting to the stage entering his fourth season in a young team to start demanding more games if he wants to hang around. It looks at this stage though as if the likes of Williams, Langdon, Sinclair, Seedsman, the veteran Toovey and on hype the likes of Scharenberg and maybe even Maynard are ahead of him. Obviously not all these guys will play the same role in the backline but he's down in the pecking order for me.

In saying that he is still young, depending on how he goes in the AFL this year I wouldn't be opposed to throwing him a new contract (he's out of contract at the end of the year?), but he needs to make the powers that be start to sit up and take notice rather than being a kid with a bit of potential.

Although I disagree with both points I can see why I am in the small minority of people who actually like Sinclair and would have him in my best 22, I am however staggered about the amount of people who simply don't rate Williams.

I'm with you on Sinclair. Hated him as a forward, but he provides good run and carry as a small defender and probably gets a bum rap on his kicking due to previous set shot badness.

He certainly played well against the Hawks, and his kicking in particular was outstanding.

Not sure about Ramsay due to not having seen enough of him (expect we will learn a lot this year) but surprised about the lack of love for Williams. We need both rebounding and lock down defenders going forward to replace Shaw Lumumba and, in time, Toovey. So plenty of room for all types. I would have thought that Langdon Williams Scharenburg Seedsman and Sinclair are all ahead of Ramsay at this stage, he is on the second line of betting with Oxley and Young. And we all may be writing off Toovey WAY too early, at age 28 (nearly) hes still a young possum.

Williams lack the displine to play defence and what I mean by that is he can not play tight enough. Opponents gets off the leash too easily. Needs to play tight like the way McCaffer holds his opponent in the middle.

Its not his role imo. Not all the time anyway. He should be the sweeper/creator/rebounder who gets the ball quickly to Pendles/Sidebottom etc in the middle of the ground.

Not up to it. Toovey doesn't have the same pace anymore.
Williams isn't up to it as lock down defender. Small forwards run amok against him.
This is where I believe the future is with Ramsay.

I'm sensing a positive tone here, TG.

I see Ramsay as someone that could lock down a star small like Cyril. Which one of those could play that role? Having 1-2 lock down players on smalls is something we need and haven't had under Buckley.

This is how I see it too
Ramsay provides us with options for different sized opposition forward set ups

In terms of development, I've never been one to set time limits on players as many develop at different rates - if this means we need to place an u tapped talent on rookie list for a number of years then so be it. U forth stely everyone wants them in the team within a couple years...this is not always going to happen

Will he make it - there's a chance given time, time that if be prepared to give him as he has shown watchers that he has tools to work with.
(Personally, I don't think his disposal is an issue - more so his decision making)

28 isn't young, most players are cooked by 30 and having gone through a knee reco doesn't help.

Once he loses his speed and agility due to age he won't be best 22 anyway

Tooves is one of a few players that this season will be in competition for their spots. I think we have various "pairs" of players that simply won't play (or shouldn't) in the same sides. Tooves, Marley and Frosty all lack the disposal skills to all play together whilst we have better options. Of those three I'd choose Tooves.
Elliott, Fasolo, Karnesis, Broomhead, Dwyer, Kennedy will all battle for spots throughout the year and you'll probably see three of them at a time in the side. Similarly we don't need two defensive forwards so Blair and Goldy will battle for that spot throughout 2015 and if De Goey shows form he could probably usurp both of them being a more complete and defensive option.
The ability to have players on deck will be so interesting this year. It's been 4 years since we had a set back six and four years since we didn't make 2-4 compulsory changes EVERY week. Competition for spots will demand more complete performances from every player. It will in turn identify those players that shall be our future.

That sounds a lot like the stat with our best mids for the last few years.
Where we only had Pendles, Swan, Beams and Ball play together a handful of times over 2 or 3 years.
