Then why did you pay so much to get omeara given his injuries.

Easy...He was the Gun, stand-out number one player of his draft year....Has leadership qualities by the bucketful & a good 7 years left of great footy ahead of him.

And he's a Top bloke to boot, that you can build a side around.

Gunston - cheap
Mitchell - cheap
Scrimshaw - cheap
Impey - cheap
Scully - cheap
Patton - soon to be very cheap

Sure the Hawks did give up a fair bit for O’Meara and Wingard but they also managed to snare a lot of players over the years that didn’t cost too much which balances it all out.

The cheap gets only keeps you stay competitive in the 8 and even this balances out eventually. Geelong is in very similar position as they are getting a lot of player for a tilt at the now. 2020 would be the last year of attempt at any success for a long while as Selwood, Dangerfield and Hawkins are nearing the end of their lifespan of peak output. Hawthorn essentially is the team without the selwood, dangerfield, hawkin, harry taylor type core players but their performance is balanced out by the vastly superior trades to date. You can list a dozen or so good players being brought in, hawthorn in hind has done very very well but this is addictive as the past success will warrant more trading out draft pick for ready made player..........with decreasing output. The reason being that during the halcyon days, the good players were brought in to complement the existing top players. Right now the good players are brought in to fill in the holes, massive holes even, not that they are filled in any case. The false sense of security will unfortunately hamper hawthorn's otherwise ability to rise back to the top as right now. 2017 should have been the start of bottoming out as it looked like it going to but somewhere along the line the strategy went to 'topping' or draft ready made players to get back into the finals.

It laughable that the cluster of second round picks given up equates to selling the farm. A few years on and we have posters still unsure on Long, Battle, and Clarke. Talk about ceilings and that ugly word potential. Meanwhile Jaeger is over his injury woes, gets tagged each week and is a leader of the new core group at Hawthorn.

Watch his output and disposal efficiency improve next year when he is joined by Titch, Worpel, and Wingard in the centre. He will play more outside with Titch and Worpel doing the grunt work.

An A-grade midfield that...And with Cogs on board, it would have been pushing us straight up into Flag contention....But of course, a certain AFL CEO ensured he scuppered that idea quick smart....Corrupt piece of VLAD mark2 that he is.

So, how’s this trade look in hindsight?

Well, Gold Coast selected either Will Brodie or Jack Bowes with the pick 10 they received from us, and the future second (as best as I can work out) ended up with Jez McLennan a couple of years later. So GC didn't win.

Hawks traded away a collection of picks that ended up as one of the above, Hunter Clark, Alex Witherden and Josh Battle (of those picks that had value) for Jaeger who played 99 games for us in a period of decline. So Hawthorn didn't win.

St Kilda gave up the opportunity of a first round selection in 2016 (so players such as Florent, Simpkin, Venables, Gallucci, T Marshall, J Berry, SPP, English, Hayward and Ridley taken in the next few non-Academy picks) to end up with Clark, Battle and Ben Long, who's now gone.

So of that trio of clubs, 2 losers and St Kilda (so far) probably with a small win.

This trade is just staggering looking back on it. The difference between doing this and drafting well is staggering. It put Hawthorn so far back.

It ended up being pick 7 in 2017 and pick ~11, 25 and 39 in 2016.Obviously giving up 2 top 12 picks for a guy that ends up just ok is a terrible decision.

But that 2016 draft was also incredibly deep so those picks 25 and 39 were much more valuable than a typical draft. They could've been players like Shai Bolton, Sean Darcy, Tom Stewart, Luke Ryan, Nick Larkey, Sam Draper, etc. If you'd drafted well with those 4 picks you could've got multiple AA players and been in a completely different list spot.

I thought it was s**t at the time and still do.
It could have been worse too. Least he actually got on the field but he never turned into the jet he originally was described to be in his early days.

His first two years of AFL were as good as you'll see from any junior, and probably better than what he ever (barring a few exceptional games) managed to deliver for us. Which is a shame

I still stand by the fact that it was the best junior year from a player since Judd. Some would argue Daicos has eclipsed it but JOM did it in a crap side. His ability to burst through with power and speed was elite. Knee injuries took a lot of that power out.

Full credit to JOM was able to recreate his game to become a tough inside brute but if not for his body he could have been one of the best in the comp.
