Traded Jaeger O'Meara [traded to Hawthorn for pick 10 and GWS's 2017 2nd rd pick]

Hodge, Roughead, Burgoyne and co will love that, paying a player who hasn't played for 2 years 1.5mil.

Depends what we pay him going forward, the idea would be to pay him much less in future contracts once we'd secured him in the first contract. Risky though. Probably can't formally agree on the future contracts, would have to be a handshake deal that wasn't enforceable (if it was enforceable it would probably be draft tampering), and we'd be screwed of a big chunk of change if he walked after his initial 2 year PSD contract.

We already offered 2 2nds and a future first.

Then when that was knocked back we traded that for pick 10 to take him in the draft and thats what will happen.

So Essendon just need pick 4 or 8 from Gold Coast.
O'Meara must be very excited going into his 1st draft.

Lol !!
So Bomber so serious that they DONT offer up pick one but next yrs first rdr AND 2 second rdr , mind you they only have one ATM.......
Dash you told me to breathe...I can't breathe!!!

If Hawthorn had $1.5 million in the cap for this year, Lewis and Mitchell wouldn't have been asked to consider their future.

That appears to be wrong. Wright has made it clear we didn't need to move either of those to do the JOM/TOM/Vickery trades, and the numbers are very believable.

I've mentioned this in other posts, but here is how the numbers might work:
The rumour has been that we were only paying 95% cap this year because of front ended contracts after Buddy left. This means we can pay 105% next year. So without anything else changing we have almost $1.1m extra available next year. We then signed a bunch of old folks to what were reported as being drastically reduced 1 year contracts (the Hodge, Burgoyne, Gibson contracts). I don't know how much we saved per year from their 2016 price for next year, but given the talk of massive unders, $200k each might not be out of the question. So there is another $600k. We also lost Hill. I have no idea what Hill might have been on, but I doubt it was much less than $300k given contracts reported on similar players.
So before Mitchell and Lewis (who seems to be a done deal now) left , we might have had 2 million for next year. We lose say 550k on TOM (more than 100K over what Sydney offered him), and 500K for Vickery. That leaves us with 950K of which we need to pay whatever we've offered JOM for next year. Now Mitchell and Lewis leave, and we have 600K for Mitchell (I've seen figures mentioned between 500 and 600k, but the 600K figure seems the more commonly reported). Lewis was probably on unders himself, but I can't see him on less than $450K, and it might have been much more. So that is around a $2m figure we could use to play shenanigans with JOM if we really wanted to once Mitchell and Lewis decided to leave. Perhaps not quite that much given we are apparently playing part of Sam Mitchell's contract (which I find baffling!), but still a big war chest.

There is a bit of speculation there, but most of it is reasonable guesses, and commonly reported rumours, so it might not be far off the reality. The biggest speculation is probably the 95% rumour, without that being true we do have some problems.

Its a bummer the trade broke down but i'm actually so stoked Whitecross will be a hawk next year.

this guy has always been a personal favorite of mine and the fact he has turned down a move north not once but twice to fight for a spot at hawthorn means, i now love the bloke.

Once you guys have sorted it out please let us know

JOM and 6 for pick 1 sounds like a winning hand

Make it 4 and we're getting serious.

If we can get Jaeger on board with it there's no way the Hawks can trump pick 1 (that's the point of pick 1 I guess), even if the pick is part of a larger swap deal that sees us retain a presence in the top end of the draft.

Surely the Slobbo/Dons article is a concocted smoke screen in tandem with the AFL to deflect from the fact that no one would want to go to Essendon and be tainted by their past deeds.
It gets the give back the brownlow story of the front page while trying to paint the Dons in a "normal" light

Lol Herald Sun just sucking people in for easy clicks. He will end up at Hawthorn and Essendon will use pick 1 in the draft on McCluggage or McGrath.

I must say. I hate GC in the off season when we have to deal with them, but they've provided a lot of entertainment watching from the sidelines this off season. Must've been how others felt with the Caddy debacle.

Pretty much the reason why Hawthorn are imploding right now. Beautiful. Almost poetic

You're underestimating the deterrent that a player being forced to go to Essendon would be to the rest of the list.

Cochrane would take a bag of twisties from them, but wont accept less than your best and fairest from you. Unfortunately you've already shipped them out elsewhere.

Lol relax you'll get your precious O'meara and Watson will lose the brownlow when the AFL Commission meets in November.
We will attract rival players next trade period when we have plenty of cash to throw around and finally make some tough list decisions.

I suspect if it is actually a story and not a just another one of Robbo's Jack Daniels driven fever dreams it's us trying to put the squeeze on the Suns and/or O'Meara's camp.

Quite possibly, but god I hope not. Effectively rewarding an extensive doping program with JOM would seem to have missed the point of the doping bans.
I care more about sending a message to JOM. Sending him off to Essendon is a bit of a win / win they get a gun and pick 6 , we get pick 1 and send a message / JOM gets a well deserved fist in the ass
