Traded Jaeger O'Meara [traded to Hawthorn for pick 10 and GWS's 2017 2nd rd pick]

Yep picks 14-23 have produced 6 all Australians by my count in 15 years.

That's 150 players picked.
Why are you going back 15 years? 15 years ago a club's recruiting department was two old blokes in a Commodore wagon at TAC Cup matches? Last three drafts have produced quality at those picks and this draft is supposed to be even better, next years better again. It's never been a better time to have draft picks.

This "draft picks don't produce stars" stance is very odd from a Hawthorn supporter whose club apparently built itself with smart drafting. But whatever. Maybe you're really superstitious about certain draft numbers or something.

Ok so 0 all Australians with those picks since Fyfe in 2009.

No just that a first rounder and 3 2nd rounders in ANY draft isn't a pricetag to be sneezed at.

For instance, that level of pricetag got Collingwood treloar.
No Treloar was 2 1st rounders unless you mean the accumulated points total for the second rounders. The points system is of little relevance unless you are chasing F/S or Academy kids. Let's not confuse list cloggers for elite 1st round calibre talent.

Whoops forgot about that. You are correct it was only a first and a second for them.

Which of course doesn't make the price of a first and 3 2nds you paid any better though.
So not sure why you care if i mistakenly quote what GC paid.

If anything all it does is further shows just how much Wright panicked when he did the saints deal.
You could have gotten jaeger way cheaper if Wright wasn't so scared and called cochrane out.
Because as we now know he was full of hot air about 2 firsts or draft.

Wright obviously fell for cochranes hot air completely and did the most obviously onesided trade in history because of it.
Tell you what go and fap over Steele and Stevens, we are more than happy with O'Meara and Mitchell.

Sure.

The pick Hawthorn ended up with landed O'Meara, which was the desired outcome.

Win win then, Saints have two first rounders next year. Hawks no pick to be able to trade / draft with to go for another gun but still have their rep as a destination club.

Will be a very interesting couple of years ahead.

No doubt Hawks have got what they want (O'Meara but damn they have invested a lot to get him)

Yep but you have left the two picks next year - you may have got your player but have invested your future to do so.

I respect the Hawks, you have what you want but this can not just be judged on the now it is about the future as well

Future picks don't end. Tomorrow never comes.

Hawthorn could very well trade it's 2018 future pick in 2017 to do what it pleases.

You obviously don't know what your team has actually done, so I'll slow it down.

If your team win the flag next year, you gave us the equivalent of our pick 10 back plus pick 22.

We don't care if 22 is a spud, we've lost nothing.

If your team do a freo and crash out next year, you gave us the equivalent of our pick 10 back plus pick 1.

We don't care if pick 1 is a spud, we've lost nothing.
Lost it! We didn't give you the equivalent of pick 10 next year, it will be dependent on where we finish. If we finish 10 then you get the equivalent of pick 10.

Time will tell!

Livin on the edge; Hawks have got away with this and have a record that is the envy of the league so can not argue with it - respect!

Next couple of years will be very intreresting

"with those picks" lmoa. If only you could take any remaining player in the draft...
Right, so every draft pick should be assessed on the basis of every player taken after that selection ever?

Fact remains that if you pick almost any number outside the first few (and even some of them), the strike rate for a decent AFL career is rarely better than 50%. For a star player, it is much lower.

Draft picks (outside say the top 5) are critically overrated by so many.

History of pick 22
Lovell 15
Crawshay 91
Mark Jones 92
Dion Myles 93
Winston Abraham 94
Joe Maclaren 95
Alistair Nicholson 96
Troy Longmuir 97
James Begley 98
Ezra Poyas 99
Richard Hadley 2000
Mark Seaby 2001
Matt Ferguson 2002
Cameron Thurley 2003
Jesse Wells 2004
Beu Muston 2005
Albert Proud 2006
Scott selwood 2007
Jackson Trengove 2008
Garrick Weedon 2009
Mitch Wallis 2010
Josh Bootsman 2011
Dean Towers 2012
Darcy Gardiner 2013
Daniel McKenzie 2014

Yeah Hawks will really rue that missed draft pick.

I once kicked seven goals on Simon Crawshay in a school match - how about that!

That's rubbish Cochrene did not get involved in the deal apart from beating his chest, he stated that clearly in his SEN interview

And if that was insurance the premuim was outrageous
Ashcroft clearly backed this up as has Eade since. Either all three are lying in public to the media, or our anonymous Hawks posters citing anonymous sources are lying / wrong.
Cochrane is an extremely smart operator. He knows enough about football and promotions to leave the football decisions to those who have that job, and use his skills as a promoter for that purpose.

Yep he really has the place humming.

We do have an issue with pick 6 (dowler then thorp)

Even so, how many good players do you think there is in each draft ?

Not highly rated kids who look ok after 30games, but really good 200 game players ?

Now the entire league has drafted well over 1500 players that would still be young enough to be playing good footy.

There's maybe 60 genuine A graders in the whole comp right now, that's 4-5 per draft.

Add to that another 100-150 good-very good players so that 10 per draft.

So 15-20 per year in on average or about 1 per team.
